| Who would your captain be? 19:14 - Feb 22 with 1752 views | Chris_ITFC | None of us actually have the required insight to really say, but I’m curious. Plenty seem to dismiss O’Shea (despite having only matchday visuals to base it on), so who would you see as a better choice? I’m curious about the criteria too. For example, would you prioritise Jack Taylor’s grit and determination, even if he doesn’t start every week. Or maybe you value Leif’s consistency of selection and performance, albeit he isn’t a naturally ‘typical’ leader (I think he’d admit). All opinions welcome! | |

I agree, but I don’t think all will. It’s a topic (DO’S) that comes up quite regularly when we lose, in a way it never really did with Morsy when we were struggling last season.

Personally I wouldn't have an issue with either of these. I think being Captain has distracted from O'Shea's game - he hasn't look the player he did last year! But thats just my opinion!

Opinions absolutely allowed. This is a question, not a challenge - why do you (and others) think the captaincy has a negative impact on O’Shea’s performances? What do you base that off? Does it also have a positive impact when he’s playing well?

In fairness, he spent a fair bit of last season looking distracted as well. Problem is, we are lacking in candidates as no one is performing consistently enough in their own roles to have the authority to issue the necessary rollickings and organise the other areas of failure. At a push, Matusiwa I guess.

Far too many people commenting on it as if they were actually there and saw 100% of what happened post match. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But I've always been a "leader of men" (and women). Well, I was a Sixer in the Cubs. Hate to say I don't rate O'Shea. Seems like a good egg. Can play a bit. But I don't see much leadership. There's some, don't get me wrong.

I'm not sure if the captaincy affects his performance but I do not think he's a natural leader. For me, the issue is no one in the squad really is. When heads go down, who picks them up? Who stops an on-pitch collapse when things start going wrong? 81 matches (IIRC) and counting without turning around a deficit is not a record to be proud of.

Those 81 matches would comprise a large number of games in which Morsy was captain. What does that tell us?

This is sort of what I mean too. People seem to attribute quite a lot to the captaincy, without much more than what they can see from the stands (i.e. no real insight on what is said, or what is done behind the scenes, or how his teammates view him) - for better or worse. There are all sorts of things that influence our lack of comebacks - tactics, mentally, opposition, opportunity, substitutions, crowd, etc.

That’s a difficult one. After so many great ones over the years I’m bound to say that none of the current players are up to it. This has become very apparent when a strong leader is needed to add that extra dimension. It should be someone who’ll play every week, has the respect of the team and really cares about Town. That’s Davis for me, just a shame we couldn’t land our last one even if it meant that he’d be on the bench at times but he’d be in the dressing room!

Bloody hell. That is damning. Either a centre-back who is not good enough. Or someone on loan who may well not be here at the end of the season. Matisuwa?
| Who would your captain be? on 20:53 - Feb 22 with 1042 views | Metal_Hacker | Truth be told IMHO , we’ve some half decent players but we’ve no leaders Leif might be one of the “seniors “ but I don’t think he’s a leader. Taylor isn’t a leader and isn’t a nailed on starter , he has grit and determination but he’s not a leader Matusiwa is by far the best at leading in terms of guile and muscle but he’s not an organiser or a leader I’m honestly struggling to suggest anyone , including Dara. I don’t really miss Morsy the player but I truly miss Morsy the Leader | |

Just my opinion, of course. I think O’Shea is more than good enough, and is the best bet for captain at the moment. Matusiwa doesn’t strike me as a captain and with the way he’s playing he doesn’t need it either. Dan Neil has captained his boyhood club to promotion, so has what it takes. Failing all those, probably Greaves, who, IIRC captained Hull before we signed him. Of course, he’d need to get in the side first.

In the Premier League. A bit different to punching above our weight in the Championship.

| Who would your captain be? on 20:58 - Feb 22 with 1005 views | itfcsuth | I think Dara is more than capable, seems a good character on and off the field, had a really difficult day yesterday, there isn’t anyone really that hasn’t had bad days this year. Overall, in the Championship, he’s a strong defender, and a good captain. | | | |

Yeah I mentioned Taylor, but I agree actually. Too prone to a selfish yellow to make himself feel good. I think Leif would ultimately be a bit burdened by it too, as much as his heart is in the right place. Having said that, it does feel a little like Dara is sacrificing himself to take that burden, rather than bringing something to it / relishing it… but that’s just me projecting assumptions in the way I’ve criticised others for doing.

| Who would your captain be? on 21:44 - Feb 22 with 867 views | Garv | Dara O'Shea. The reasons that dismiss him is because the season hasn't gone as we'd hoped, and the fact his name isn't Sam Morsy. He had an iffy start to the season, but frankly so did everyone. Since then, until Saturday, he's been one of our best players. The pile on is ridiculous. [Post edited 23 Feb 11:02]

Yeah, much like a lot of gripes, they would go away if we were winning… not that that’s always a reason to dismiss them. I wonder if the armband was part of how we convinced him to stay? Or if we’d have pushed harder to keep Morsy if McKenna wasn’t sure about O’Shea as captain?
