| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 21:48 - Feb 28 with 1153 views | The_Major | I give it a matter of hours before someone with an avatar of St George walking a bulldog and waving at Winston Churchill and a bunch of numbers in their username posts somewhere on social media that it shouldn't be allowed because the Christian players (Anglican only, obviously) can't take communion. I have a bottle of HP sauce that has a higher IQ than all these cretins combined. | | | |

The only consolation, however depressing it might be, is that the only thing they have in common with the decent majority is the team they support. Small victories I guess. |
They don’t defend themselves because it’s not worth the hassle or they’ll get bullied or they’ll get verbally abused or something like that as it’s an echo chamber here.

| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 18:15 - Feb 28 by MattinLondon | I think that most young kids shame a lot of adults in how they play and interact with other young children - not really paying attention to skin colour or religion. Try explaining what happened in that match to an average six year old and they’ll simply look confused. The adults booing a few players getting a drinks break there are all grade A c**ts. |
Totally untrue. Kids judge other kids on everything including skin colour. The name call ostracise and segregate and bully without being taught how or a reason why. Anything different is picked upon. However some children have listened and been taught differently and are much much better at being human and not animals.

Yes, but these blokes are BROWN, Sitters.

| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 19:51 - Feb 28 by Perublue | Yes of course you are right it would have been dark and grim at that time (when isn’t it ooooop North) You’d think Leeds with such a large Muslim population nearly 10% in fact would be a little more understanding towards them as you can safely presume a lot of the fans in the stadium are Muslim or have family or friends that are and should know their requirements/needs ? Pity the poor sods that live up in the higher reaches of Scandinavia. |
Not relevant to the main discussion, but heard from an Imam, that it's acceptable to use the time of sundown in Mecca when you live in the far North.

| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 20:35 - Feb 28 by redrickstuhaart | I havent seen it. I saw suggestions of fake injuries and abnormal delays to facilitate it. I am caught between saying thats a reaosnable adjustment to make, and saying that religions are all rather silly and we ought not to pander to them! |
It was a break in play for a foul. The big screen explained why there was a brief pause (about 45-60 seconds) and the game continued to boos and chants of 'what the effing hell was that?' If you're a muslim player or fan at any age level pulling on a Leeds shirt, what on earth can you be thinking? I'm an atheist, I think religion is ridiculous and the source of much wrong and some good in the world but I recognise it's courteous to acknowledge not everyone has the same view. These are dark days when a pause for observance is too much to bear.

| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 01:05 - Mar 1 with 911 views | quirkie | How long was the actual break? A minute or so, get used to it as there is going to be a heck of a lot of breaks in games during the upcoming world cup. Different reason but I'm sure ITV will fit in some ad breaks. I'm also not going to berate 30,000 odd people for booing and put them in the same camp as the knuckle dragging tommy robinson brigade, Leeds fans are whether we like or not some of the best fans in Football. Was this a first? Was a break for religious observance been done in any other games today but not reported . Has such a thing been done in the past? Could they have waited another 30 mins to half time? Was 11 mins chosen because that was the exact moment of sunset in Manchester today? If the game was 200 miles further south or north would 10 or 12 mins have been the time for the break as the sun sets at a slightly different time in the day depending on your geographical location. Should religion now become a part of football and we accommodate all sorts of wishes to protect players sensibilities, what do we do about atheists and agnostics and humanists (sorry if I've missed others out)? Was this all just a stunt to once again divide the nation rather than bring it together? | |

Pretty sure this is far from the first drink break for Ramadan in top flight football So the Leeds fans can and should be berated

Fair enough, I've just looked it up online and it is something the Premier League have been doing since 2020/2021. So yep I'll take it back, Leeds fans are utter scumbags.

Whilst I utterly appreciate that morons will moron, I think a lot of the anger was the fact that Leeds had been playing really well and Pep took the opportunity to get the players together for a team talk. Bit like when keepers go down for a life threatening injury to enable a quick team talk. Whilst not sure what the answer is, I think its important to look at the full picture in these situations. Edit... im not condoning booing for other reasons.... thought best to clarify, just in case this causes upset. [Post edited 1 Mar 11:16]

I'm not sure the 'what the f*ing hell was that?' chant really backs up your theory but appreciate there are different perspectives. Leeds had agreed to the break so they also had the opportunity to get together but it appears they chose not to.

I haven't read all the post but was having a conversation about it last night. From the image I saw online it happen in the 12th minute if this was the case then why the hell didn't they just kick off 15 minutes later? Surely the powers that be can use a bit of common sense

There was nothing divisive here. It's been done loads of times. Player safety should be the #1 priority. They are not robots. We have drinks breaks in hot weather. The whole thing took two minutes.

My point still stands... A lot of the anger was directed at the impromptu team talk. I might be wrong, but I dont believe Leeds did it.
| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 08:49 - Mar 2 with 166 views | ashtonscoffeecup | It always amazed me how Sam Morsy's performance levels went UP during ramadan. first few games i watched him to see if it had any affect on him, but game by game, year after year, he got better when fasting. he did a really good interview where he talked of feeling cleansed or more focused during this time. | | | |
| Leeds fans boo’ing the Muslim players breaking fast and having a drink. on 09:31 - Mar 2 with 94 views | soupytwist | I was listening to the 5 Live commentary of this match on the way home from the Swansea game. The commentator explained that there would be a short scheduled break at around 11 minutes so that players observing Ramadan could break their fast. That happened at a natural break in play in the 12th minute and lasted a couple of minutes tops. The commentator mentioned that Guardiola had taken the opportunity to get his players together for a quick chat and that Farke had done similar. He made the point that the Leeds manager would probably be telling his players to play more like they had in the first 5 minutes or so as they'd let their intensity drop after a good opening few minutes. I guess that this is a fairly unusual situation in that sunset happens early in the game. Had sunset been at about 10 past six perhaps they would have waited for half time. And had it been at some point in the second half they would have scheduled a break like this one. As for kicking off 15 minutes later, Sky and the worldwide broadcasting schedule bends for no man (or woman). I actually think that if they're going to stick to the scheduled kick off time, the Premier League and its broadcasters should own it and when sunset occurs during the game, they should say to Muslim players - here's the timings you can play or not depending on your physical condition and maybe you're a sub and come on once you've had a chance to break your fast. Other religions fast at different times of the year, what happens with them? | | | |

It might be helpful if they stopped labelling it like that and just called it a generic "health and safety/refreshment break" - would kill off the "keep religion out of sport" angle. The other one we often hear in such circs is "this is a Christian country" - I've already been on a thread on FB asking people who say this: when was the last time they attended church, or kept the sabbath day holy, or showed love for their neighbour? A futile effort, no doubt.
