Think it means that once upon a time the town was surrounded by walls with entry and exit points being at the North gate, South Gate, East gate and West gate.

I really hope not. I'm all for people doing their creative hobby but he's really not very good.

I walked through Balkerne Gate in Colchester at the weekend, apparently the largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain. It's quite interesting how you can walk across the footbridge from a 1970s multi-story car park to a nearly 2,000-year-old piece of Roman wall.
