What did everyone make of him today? After such an incredible start here he’s looking to do a little bit too much for me lately. Won some important free kicks but was looking for them at times as well. Probably not the easiest game to come into. Not sure him and Nunez (playing behind him) is really going to work at the same time through the middle.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Yeah there’s a reason why maybe he has been no higher then Bristol during his career in terms of a stater but I think he can make things happen against teams that are not so compact, Derby being a decent example.

I recently happened to stumble across the extended highlights of our home game against Bristol City during the (last) promotion season. I didn't realise how superb he played against us in that game.

I remember seeing him when Wycombe beat us 1-0 in 2022 around Christmas and thinking he was decent.

He's probably our most athletic and mobile midfield option we have. Obviously he has faults with some of his decisions, but right now he's a huge player for us.

He is a left winger in this system.

What makes Nunez so good and so important in that 10 role for us is how he retains the ball. His touch is so good. He receives the ball, gets it under control then moves possession. He doesn't go on mazy dribbles, he links the play.

Mehmeti when he gets the ball, his first though is turn and run. Which is fine. That is his game and if he is playing on the left we need that, it is what Clarke does so well. In the 10 he loses the ball way too much, so just doesn't look right to me.

I thought he was poor and even suggested taking him off for Philogene. That's just based on today though.

He did turn the game on its head when he came on.

Reading through the comments, and I might get shot down for this, but does it not feel a bit similar to Clarke and Philogene when they first signed?

We’ve seen players look like they can play with real freedom for other sides, then come to us and seem a lot more conservative. Mehmeti felt a bit different at first because he looked like he brought that Bristol freedom straight into his first few games, but lately he does not seem to have that same licence.

It is not really a criticism, because we are obviously doing plenty right, but it does feel like it takes players quite a while before their individual quality really starts to show once they have adapted to the way we play.

FWIW I thought he did OK today, won some good fouls to relieve pressure but was often crowded out by players, some of his own doing I suppose by heading down blind alleyways. What I do like though, is that he's always eager to work hard for the team.

He hangs on to the ball too long too often for my liking, when a quicker pass off would be better. However he's bought some energy and some undoubted skill to the team. He'll learn.

He's been hugely ineffective for the last 6-7 games.

Bright start to his career in Feb, but he's not really impacting games at all right now IMO.

If promoted, I would expect buying a serious number 10 and 9 combo would be our top priority.
[Post edited 6 Apr 21:35]

Would disagree on that, think he’s still been a spark for us in the number 10 pretty consistently since joining, although was quiet today.

If we are promoted though, we would need to add comfortably over 10 players of real quality as a minimum, would need a massive reshuffle again you feel.

To be fair, Hirst's first touch was generally a lot better today.

I honestly didn't think it was, I thought his battling to win the ball back after the poor first touch was much better though.

Couldn't disagree more. His energy and movement made a big difference to our midfield.

Agree with you. His energy brings a rhythm and pace to a game, as does Nunez. I like the fact that he tries things. He doesn’t get it right all the time and some of the choices he makes (shoot or pass) aren’t always the best but that’ll come in time. He made a great start for the club but he’s still new to it, his surroundings and McKenna's way of playing.

Good player who was an absolute bargain. Could he play in the Premier League? He’s got the ability and if we are lucky enough to make it I wouldn’t write him off.

He's irritating to watch IMO. I don't think I've seen another player hold onto the ball for so long when obvious options are on. Unfortunately for him, there's not a chance that he's PL quality. Will more than likely be loaned back to a Champ club IMO.

I think he has PL technique but not quite the pace for it, there's times where you want him to open the taps and he doesn't have it

It's a funny league though, certain players could look better than they are when we are defending for 70% of the time, give them space up on the pitch on the break and it's a different ball game

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Of course he should, be ridiculous to suggest otherwise, he has real quality and can make things happen.

There are plenty of examples of players who step up from the championship to the prem and do well and he'll be one of our star performers in the prem if we get there

The reality is and I am sure we all know this already is when we get promoted this season we would pretty much need to buy a half a new team again if we wanted to stay up and/or it give it a proper go this time.

I would think out of what there is currently Davies, O Shea and Matisuwa would be the only 3 nailed on starters. The rest is up for debate.

Obviously we would have an immense squad of higher level championship players to fill in the gaps including Mehmeti as well so if we get pumped every week you have a good chance of getting back up again as the players will have PL experience.

Basically the business model is great you get loads of money if you win or lose by gaining promotion, which I assume is a good thing.

I thought he was integral to that pre half time spell where we won the game. Gave us some drive and energy, popped up in really good areas. Second half he struggled but he wasn't alone in that. I like him though, he can make things happen and has a lot more variety to his game than our other 10 options as he's a decent passer but also very much a ball carrier. Also offers a goal threat that our other 10 options haven't. I think Nunez knits us together more effectively at the minute but he's had most of the season with his teammates and his early performances as a 10 were quite hit and miss. Think Mehmeti will be a squad option if we go up, as will Nunez.

Exactly, Mehmeti would be a great squad option for PL and a starter for Championship, that is probably the 'levels'.

While he's creative and can run with the ball, the thing that stands out to me is his physicality, strangely. On quite a few occasions yesterday he was able to get his body between man and ball and someone of his build you'd expect to be eased off it by a lot of players/defenders, but he's pretty solid. He was effectively holding the ball up like a striker would.

I thought he spent a lot of the game trying to control/hold the ball with one of their centre halves pulling the shirt off his back. I thought he scrapped well yesterday without being fantastic. He got a decent, well weighted assist for McAteer too.

Absolutely right. The tempo increased as soon as he came on and we scored twice soon afterwards.

might be controversial, but I think the increase in tempo and playing it up quicker had something to do with Matusiwa being off the pitch. The build up play was a lot less formulaic. So saying second half we missed his defensive work and the control he can give.

Mehmeti is what this side needed I think , gives us something different , always looks pretty vibrant whenever he’s on and I think that makes us look far less stiff and predictable than we’ve looked in spells this season

Thought he made a very significant improvement to us when he came on and was obviously involved in the first goal, but then wasn't really involved in the second half.

Only one trying to close there back four down in the last ten minutes done a half decent job of it, thought he was good enough yesterday,
