Wonder if promotion is the only way he ends up back on loan here

Last summer he had a lot of clubs interested in him but I dont think its ott to say this season has been dreadful for him.

Would other prem clubs still be interested or does he need any form of loan to rediscover himself and go again.

I’ll be surprised if he’s still at Chelsea for the start of next season. But he will still have a few clubs after him - I expect that Everton will be in for him.

Maybe a lot depends on what clubs qualify for European competition and who will need a bigger squad.

Didier drogba on Liam Delap performance for Chelsea;

"Listen, We have to stop this thing in football where we see a young man run fast, or hold the ball up for five seconds, and we say, 'Okay, get him to Stamford Bridge.'

Tonight, I saw a player who is still playing for Ipswich in his head. He is playing like a man who thinks he has ninety minutes to make a mistake. At this level, you have half a second. One touch too many? Gone. A fraction late on the press? Gone.

I see him grappling with defenders, trying to use his strength. But in the big leagues, everyone is strong. You need more than a big frame. You need the brain. You need to know where the space is before the space even exists.

Right now, Liam is falling. He looks like a tourist in that Chelsea attack.
You want to be a Chelsea striker? You have to be a killer. You have to be cold. Right now, Liam is too warm. He is too comfortable being 'involved.' Instead of being the reason the other team’s center-back can’t sleep tonight.

Until he learns that, he is an Ipswich player wearing a blue shirt that is simply too heavy for him."

Really not worked out for the lad.

I think he will have better options than us, and I think Chelsea will want to sell rather than loan.

He was very good for us, but became over hyped, and chose the wrong move.

I also think we may not get the same player we had last time, so I'd rather not revisit.

I agree with Drogba's analysis, but would just point out that he got the move to Chelsea based on his performances for Ipswich in that League, against those defenders.

The difference is that he was the main man at Ipswich, had the full trust of the manager, and was allowed to try things that didn't always come off. His game was about hassling defenders for 90 minutes because in one in three games it led to a goal.

That may not be enough at Chelsea.

He is very much a Newcastle style Centre Forward. Getting the crowd going through full-blooded commitment is a big part of the job there.

Edit: Newcastle, not Chelsea

Good job he was selfish. Without his individual brilliance we would have been relegated by Xmas.

Why do we want him to return?

He was great for the first half of the season, but then he went off the boil and you could see mentally he wasn't quite there... and, in fact, quite often a liability. Add in a season at Chelsea where he's gone backward even further

We need to smarten up. Kalvin Phillips was going backwards and was a disaster at West Ham, yet we still went in for him.

You can't improve if you're haven't got it upstairs .... and he doesn't look like he has that. It might seem obvious for him to return here.... but we need ready-made players, not ones that need fixing.

Agreed. I think we need to look elsewhere if we go up. Hardly any football brain, failed to act as pivot, selfish, poor passer, and poor heading technique for big man. Especially in the second half of 24/25, Delap was where our possession and attacks ended. We lost a lot of our double-promotion team ethic with him.

Because he is a damn good player. He scored double figures for us last time he played for us.

It hasn't worked for Chelsea, it often doesn't for lots of players. But to compare him in any way to Kalvin Phillips is hilariously silly.

Why do we want him to return?

I mean, he did carry our attack for about 80% of a PL season, scored double figures and had most of the PL begging to sign him. You don't stop being a really good player just because you've had a dog of a season at a club as volatile as Chelsea.

He got injured at a really bad time at the start of the season, Joao Pedro hit form, manager who signed him leaves, and expectation is on a different level at Chelsea. A lot has worked against him, he's still a great player, and if he leaves he'll have some serious options. I for one hope we're in the race.

Not surprised it’s not worked out for him there. Clusterf**k of a club and by all accounts, a dressing room full of cee you next Tuesdays.

If we go up, we all know the top end of the pitch needs improving, and Delap with now two seasons in the Prem under his belt and best career form under KMc, would be, I think, a move worth pushing for.

I've seen him a few times, especially the last 2 games and he looks lost and like he doesn't know what he's doing.

From us to Chelsea I think was a massive step and it hasn't worked out. I'm sure Chelsea will try and offload him on loan or permanently in the summer. Its just not worked out for him.

Delap on 12:23 - Apr 22 with 1378 viewsKievthegreat

If we can get him on loan with an obligation to buy on staying up, I'd snap your hand off. He's clearly got the talent and McKenna has shown he can get the best out of him so far in his career.

He'll also get the majority of play as our first choice number 9 that he might not get elsewhere where he might be second choice or European/cup games starter. So could be good for him.

Wouldn't blame him however, if an Everton or Newcastle came in as a permanent option. Far more likely to stay up than up and also a place where he can fight for first choice number 9, even if it's not guaranteed.

Ouch! But I think he's absolutely right.

Which is why he SHOULD NOT come back to Town. He needs to go to an Everton, Brighton, Palace kind of team.

But once other teams had watched him he got found out and he didn't have the ability (nouse?) to add other things to his game. I think we forget how he declined in the 2nd half of the season, to the degree that many were preferring Hirst as #9. It's a shame that playing for a club like Chelsea hasn't seen him improve. i wonder what that says (of him or Chelsea!)

What's the obsession he's selfish,

This was weird narrative at the time, he didn't have much support to interact with when we were in the PL.

There was a school of thought that Hirst would have linked play better but I think this season has shown that would have been unlikely.

Without Delaps goals we would have been in real trouble.

I will always remember his performance and effectiveness in the Chelsea game, winning the penalty, scoring the penalty, setting up our second goal, but given that that was our only home win of the season (the fewest ever at any level for us) and we were relegated by 16 points (the biggest margin at any level for us) I dread to think what "real" trouble would have looked like. Southampton were overall much worse than us finishing lower than us but they did win as many games at Portman Road as we did.

Never forget that on 7th. April 2021, for ITFC, the Game Changed.

I agree he didn't have much support, maybe he was marked but later in the season several times he could have passed, but I believe our season had drifted so maybe that's the reason he never passed when it would have been easier to pass for me he's selfish, but he had bigger fish to fry,
Totally the wrong club to go to,
Ps I'd just like to add I actually like him as a person nothing what so ever do I dislike, just a bit of a football opinion,
