How do Southampton approach Tuesday? 15:29 - Apr 26 with 3780 viewsDubtractor

Lots of discussion about our approach, but i wonder if they might take a pragmatic view, with an eye on the playoffs?

It would take a hugely improbable set of results for them to get second from here. Even if they beat us, it would need both us and Millwall to fail to win very winnable final games. It would also need them to beat Preston by a greater margin than Boro manage if they beat Wrexham.

Not saying they won't try and win, that would be daft, but perhaps a bit more rotation than they might have done had they beaten Bristol city last week.

They’ve got to proper go for it if they want a chance of getting second, if they do that it could help us unless they’re uncontrollable and get a couple of early goals of course.

I can see them coming out and looking to get down our throats.

Considering we conceded 5 away to Wrexham they imo will attack us and look to get a few goals.

If they havent achieved that by HT imo 2nd half I think theyll slow down and wave the flag and see the game out.

If they go for it and it is an open game that will no doubt suit us more.

I for one am looking forward to it, got drama written all over it.

Fatigue will probably play a big part for both teams , especially us , but we have the added incentive of if we win we are up on the night 99% , I believe that will play its part .

They must think it's a very strong likelihood that they'll be in the play offs even if they beat us, so they'll want to rest players and let us go up automatically rather than face us in the play offs. If they have any strategic sense, that is.

They'll go for it – they'll want to reel us in and then see how we & the other contenders cope under the biggest possible pressure next weekend. Anything could yet happen.

If they beat Bristol this was the game they could overtake us. So thank god for that. I think deep down they’ll know it’s unlikely that both us and Millwall fail to win last day.

However, the fact neither of us did this weekend has kept them interested. They’ll play to win but it’s different game to if they could have gone second obviously. If it’s level going into the last 20 we should throw everything at it and how they cope.

I’ve watched them a fair bit on this run, truth is they are a better team/squad than us tbh with the likes of Peretz, Jander, Charles, Azaz, Scienza, Harwood-Bellis and all of their strikers. If they don’t go up there is a few I’d be very interested in.

I’d like to Toast Will Still for his efforts with Southampton and the fact we can beat QPR and finish above them is huge for us.

They maybe pretty knackard now though

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I'm probably overthinking it, but they might not be too disappointed to lose.

We're not exactly prime Barca, but they may prefer to meet Millwall in the play-offs and if Soton aren't promoted, it means one less parachute team next season.

They certainly look to have plenty of scoring threats - more than we do of late. In our last six games, penalties aside, we haven’t scored many. So that’s a concern as is the fact we seem to start games so damn slowly.

Not many of our starters get in their team! Whoever gave Will Still the gig might have cost them a lot of money as this side will get broken up if they don’t go up. Proper talent in there.

They will probably try to win it in the first half. And hope to go a couple of goals ahead.

If it's still a draw pr Ipswich are winning at halftime then I think they may ease up on the pressure.

But really, who knows?

They have to go for it. If they don't win they can rest players for the final game.

After their relentless run and the form they have been in, are they going to care if they are home or away first or who they face?

If it's Boro and they are home first they can get ahead and Boro have stumbled at home.

If it's Millwall, they have the best away record in the league. Deal with them at home first.

I am not convinced they would want to avoid Millwall either. If I was them, I would rather play them over two legs than in a one off winner take all Wembley game.

Tempting fate disclaimer: Of course it could yet be us in the play offs...

If we win it’ll be a lot less than 1% chance we’re caught on the final day. More like 1 in several million.

I know our recruitment of lots of Championship players was bemoaned last time in the Prem, but if we go up a few Southampton players plus Hackney would seem pretty solid start to me. Not sure about Femi Azeez at Millwall. The only player I'd consider from them, but not sure he's Prem quality.

Would need to be joined with some more experienced top flight players this time.

Yep, this is not an EFL team, if they appointed matey in the summer they’d be on 110+ points.

A lot I'm sure will be based on how many players are feeling it after the FA Cup semi. A win would give them a chance of 2nd, but pushing any player not feeling 100% run the risk of injury and missing the playoffs.

I don't rate their squad from a PL perspective. Like any of the championship teams, they will need a massive overhaul, especially as they were worse than us last time.
They are on an incredible run admittedly, but that can easy end at the wrong time.

Interestingly I know a couple of Saints fans who don't want Hull in the playoffs, they think Hull have a voodoo power over them this season.

Would like to think their manager is one on our long future list.

He is only 32. He is the new Danny Rohl....

He will be going to PL very soon with or without them. I do worry we are so hyper UK focused sometimes with our leadership team.

Both us and Millwall were away from home, with us playing a team unbeaten in 9 with 6 clean sheets in 7 games.

It was a good point for us.

I’m struggling to see both of us and Millwall failing to win on Saturday, one perhaps, but not us both

Yes I’ve been shouting from the roof tops how good a point was for us, no pressure to get something at Southampton and a win v QPR to guarantee it was a dream scenario.
