Azon and more…. 08:56 - Apr 29 with 2089 viewsklg199

Sorry if already posted but great persistence by Ivan for the assist on our first and taking one for the team when pulling back their player when he knew he was going to be subbed was very smart.

Thought their number 9 was a handful. Canadian player apparently.

QPR at home, on paper the easiest game of the run in. We can’t screw it up Shirley, but I’ve always had a nagging feeling we end up playing Wrexham in the play offs and end up being the bad guys in the media circus and Disney documentary. Hopefully not. COYB.

You mean like Al-Hamadi was for a large part of 24-25 season? **Shudder**

I wouldn't want to do Azon injustice by comparing him to Al Hamadi bless him...

I don't wish to sound rude, but I'm only really interested in whether or not he can do a job for Ipswich and what McKenna expects of his players, so to that extent, it's not really relevant imo whether or how he might fit into other teams.

He has the speed of thought and clever movement that would do well in the Premier League. He's also stronger and more athletic than he looks. His finishing is nowhere near top level, but I think that can be improved as I said in an earlier post. I think he'd be useful to retain as a squad/backup forward in the PL, particularly as he has now had the benefit of settling into the country, area and club for 12 months. He's still relatively inexperienced and I think he will only improve with age.

I read that Cesc Fabrigas rates him, so that'll do for me!

Didn't he also rate Colin Healey?

True, he could certainly play like Colin Healey. For one match anyway.

Yeah not a bad shout, although he kinda had that one season didn't he, more than ending up prolific overall

Harry Kane was around 1 goal in 6 from his first 4 loans. Was younger though 🤣

In all seriousness if you could get Azon for £1-1.5 million then why not. If he can get better grip boots, stay in his feet more (easily worked on) and really improve his finishing (linked with not falling over) then he is a good squad option and should increase in value.

I wouldn't be busting a gut or spending anything higher though. I don't see him back here to be honest but let's see.

Now level with Leif for assists for the season on 4 and only behind Nunez who has 7. If he can improve his finishing he has the potential to be a good striker. Think we'll struggle to get 2/3 new 9s in of Prem quality so potential for him and/or Hirst to be the number 2 and 3 strikers with a new main man or buy him and loan him back to the Champ for a further seasons development.

I think he has a lot of value to this team. If we continue to play McKenna's system the burden on strikers to score is pretty minimal compared to most other teams. He basically created Burns goal last night and prevented a very dangerous break. He's not been that impactful in other games but aside from a couple of early appearances, he's always brought something. I'd happily pay £5m or so and have him as a squad forward. I've even wondered about playing him in the ten.

Walters, kuqi, Murphy. Azon is still young, most likely even Kane on his earlier years and numerous loans wasn’t that successful. Shooting technique, accuracy, power can be improved where as awareness and ability generally can not. Azon has good awareness, good ability and most important of all tries hard which is good for team mates to see so I think he is good to stick with and help to mould.

Any update Waveney? You poke about the forum pretending to engage but never continue with a discussion once you've had your pop.

So i'll ask again, 99% of the forum likes Azon, his overall play has improved greatly, he puts himself a bout, wins headers that you don't think he deserves to win. But the thing that holds him back is his shooting and the stats back that up showing his 6% conversion rate.

So what do you disagree with about people's thoughts on Azon?

Apologies, I dont treat responding to you as priority.

My comment was based on some of the ridiculous stuff I have read about Azon, on here (to a lesser extent) and on the socials.

Hence my comment (can't believe Im spelling this out, like explaining to a year 3 class), Azon is nowhere near as bad as some will want you to believe.

Do you understand now ? Please say yes.

Unfortunately Waveney as you've failed to provide any form of proof for your thoughts, then there is nowhere further to take the discussion.

Good effort though, but you failed to abide by your own rules.

If he was good, he'd fit into a lot of other teams. I still stand by the fact he would not be the first striker for any of the other 11 teams in the top 12 of this league.

I don't think his finishing can improve for him to be a top level striker, especially if he is a backup striker. He needs to be somewhere playing week in week out.

If you take on a player with a low conversion rate you probably end up with a player with a low conversion rate.
If you take on a player with a high conversion rate you don't always get a player giving you a high conversion rate.
This is why it is so difficult to get a striker who will give you 15-20 goals a season regularly. Very few are like Kane or Shearer that's why like the guy who Liverpool bought goes for £100 million. But even that doesn't always work.
I love Azon, not just because he tries like hell, he's better at holding the ball up than Hirst and is better in the air given he is shorter.
It really depends on what KM wants in his striker and that appears to be to hold it up and bring others into play or to flick on headers.
The commentator said something that I alluded to prior to last nights game and that was nobody runs in behind Azon onto his flick ons. We don't have that type of player. We said before Nunez came in that we didn't have a number 10 and maybe we still don't have one.
How many goals does Nunez or for that matter Memeti score.
I hope we sign Azon.

That's where Szmodics was so good for Blackburn. Playing off Gallagher in a similar way. But we like our 10 to be involved in the build up rather than getting beyond the striker.

Has there been any historic cases of well known strikers who started off with actual scoring problems but then went on to be absolutely fine?

I've also seen it that with strikers there has to be that natural instinct with finishing, you kinda see it with Egeli in how he's gone about the goals he has scored, but with Azon I think the cleanest strike from memory was the one when he cut in and put it bottom corner

My god I struggle with you, I really do.

However, for fairness, I will explain my thoughts

To me, Azon has got infinitely better as the season progressed, especially these last few games. His work rate for the team has been excellent.

His finishing/shot conversion isn't great, however his all round game compliments a lot of others in the team, therefore in the current team, I believe he justifies his selection over Hirst.

Will we need better if we go up, of course we will.
Should we keep him, I believe we should

I would also say, that I don't think I've ever witnessed (over a spread of 10 games or more) a player being more unlucky with woodwork hitting/worldie saves than Azon.

However, I can assure you, that the irony that I am justifying my thoughts to a man who thought Walle Egeli and Akpom should be our starters in the last match and suggested Ashley Young for Saturday isn't remotely lost on me.

I hope this meets with your approval Mr Frimley.

So you agree with everyone that his all round game has improved and is pretty good, but you also agree his shot conversion isn't great

So you don't actually have any issue then as you basically agree with it all

i didn't say they should start, i said could we see a suprise inclusion and one of them go uptop to give our other two strikers a rest, sorry for posting a football related post on the football tab. And ashley young comment was in regards to someone going into the deep cm role SHOULD azor not be fit. But you know that, you must just be having fun again.

But good to know you feel the same about azon as everyone else

It was excellent work from Azon for the goal, top drawer stuff. And a nice improvised ball from Greaves when not much was on which led to it.

Azon overall was really good last night, worked so hard and won more than his fair share of aerial duels. There's loads to like about him but as a striker who can't finish he's always going to have a ceiling. If he can improve that part of his game he's going to be some player but that's a big if.

Well, could always try him where those who have watched him a lot more than us believe he should be played. No 10, not 9. I refer to Real Zaragoza fans. Takes the burden off his shoulders about scoring and could even become a better player. In particular as we don't have one, a no 10, that is. Nunez and Mehmeti are not.
