| Reform UK has taken control of Suffolk County Council. on 15:35 - May 8 by DJR | Interestingly, so far 62,000 people have voted Green, not that far behind Reform and ahead of the Tories, Labour and the Lib Dems. Maybe the so-called green lefty bumfest that some say TWTD is reflects to an extent Suffolk as a whole. It also suggest Polanski hasn't alienated the rural vote as some have said he has. [Post edited 8 May 15:37]

On your final point, that's very clear. Greens have won a lot of rural seats, plus (it seems) better off medium sized towns? Reform have done better in suburban seats and less well off urban seats.

Nearly every council now has an awful lot of Reform councillors in them. What actually gives you the right to call people that anyway ? The dimwits are people like you who keep berating others just because they don’t have the same view as you. Nothing to say you are any better or any more right than those with opposite views. Just you giving it the big one. You don’t even live around here anyway, go tend your leaks. |
Leaks? My plumbing is fine thanks as we’ve just had the bathroom done. Were you trying to make a xenophobic “joke” and meant leeks? People can think whatever they want. It’s the people who are taking pleasure at winding people up to own the libs who are the tribal dimwits. [Post edited 8 May 16:11]

Results on that link are coming through. A quick glance suggests 4 Labour, 3 Reform and 1 Green. Reform therefore haven't done as well, so far, as feared.

Using lobbying, bribery or coercion? I guess, to be fair, this will be the way of Reform-run councils. One huge grift.

That's assuming that most voters are rational, and will apply critical thought to their decision in 2029. Yarmouth, when presented with the choice between the racists and the ultra-racist fascists, opted unanimously for the fascists. Even if there's chaos in Reform councils between now and 2029, you can quite easily see Führage trying to lay it at the door of the Government, and claim that the only way to make Reform councils work will be to elect a Reform government. And his target audience will lap it up.

And this will kickstart Conservatives and Labour to clean house and start again. Politics has been infested by people out for themselves on all sides. Whatever happens over the next five years, it's going to be painful. I voted LibDem and Green in locals btw, in case anyone thinks I have an agenda here. I still maintain that if you want to be a politician, you shouldn't be a politician.

The problem with that last line is it excludes all the people who want to improve the country and society, who think that public service is a valuable contribution to things running well. Admittedly, many of those end up disillusioned, due to grifting, stalling, inertia or party rigidity. However, they should be encouraged to at least try.

However, his target audience is not enough to get Reform over the line on their own. He'll need to persuade a large chunk of floating voters also. That is a much more difficult task.

Maybe I'm feeling especially pessimistic after today, but I'm not sure that's the case? It's a small sample, but take a look at the Norfolk County Council results: https://elections.norfolk.gov. Even where they've lost seats (barring Yarmouth, which is a bit of a special case) they've polled at least 25% of the vote. If we're looking at there being five major parties on the ballot in 2029, they'll only need a minimum of 20%-25% of the vote in some seats, assuming that there'll be a fair few four-way marginal. Given the success Reform have had today, and the incredibly low bar of the FPTP system, I think they'll be all but there in 2029 based on today's figures.
