I had in my head that £20 was probably the cost of a day out at a decent attraction. I get that prices have increased, but by so much? Surely there's a greed premium being tacked on on top of the increased operating costs, hoping that owners will be able to get away with laying it all at the Government's door? |  |

You can go to a service at York minster for free and also quickly pop your head in to get a look at some of the building.
The pay barrier is inside and is for all of the other bits like going up the tower, seeing the crypt etc

Places like Wells justify it on the basis that it costs £x,000 a day to run the place, but that certainly doesn't seem to stop other cathedrals such as Norwich and Lincoln from running on a 'recommended donation' basis. | |

Luckily we went to Florida & DisneyWorld in October half term, when the weather wasn't too hot & none of the Americans were on break so the parks were half empty. |
Luckily that visit in 2023 wasn't the first time. On a previous visit we got to see the parade which was really good. I went in the Rocky Mountaineer and at that time there was a Pirates of the Caribbean we went on as well.
The monorails are great to get around on. Price wise I think it was £100 inclusive of the coach which took us from the docks in Miami to Disney world.
We did a cruise around Biscayne Bay which is worthwhile. | | | |

A few years ago I was down in London for a few days for some exams, so decided to pop to St Paul's and Westminster Abbey for either Morning Prayer or Evensong.
St Paul's was lovely, and I was able to have a little amble about before the service. At Westminster Abbey I was guided to the chosen side chapel, and very much chivvied out the door afterwards (being told off for stopping to look at a memorial) so that they could crack on with the more important business of letting in the paying customers. | |

Honestly guys, gals and all - there comes a time when you can't go out at all. Either save up & enjoy it when you can, or take to the hills for free - public footpaths, bridleways, country lanes and lakes cost nothing to meander along, some are ok for wheelchair users; there'll be pubs to visit for the price of a pint (yeah I know), and you'll probably meet some lovely people + their dogs too. |

Indeed - the same people that moan about wages then get upset when things cost more. Funnily enough, the countries with the highest wages, typically also have the highest cost of living. The UK now has one of the highest minimum wages (only one employment cost) in Western Europe, even higher than Germany where typically wages are higher. As you correctly identify, we also have the highest energy costs in the west thanks to our reliance on gas, and ridiculous pricing system.
The real issue in the UK is that housing costs take up such a high proportion of people’s incomes, driven by our rapid population growth and expensive land. |

If they hadn’t been bailed out, state workers would have been unpaid, hospitals couldn’t treat people, people wouldn’t have had money for groceries etc. So whilst painful it could have been much worse…

I’m not really sure what point you’re making? The debt crisis has nothing to do with their minimum wage, that’s just poor governance (and their bailout loans fully repaid). But Greece has always lagged behind the West in terms of wages, and has a history of young people migrating for better opportunities. I hope you tipped well! | | | |

Having visited most of it I can assure you that’s not the case. The cost of living index is a good reference point, e.g housing costs, groceries, and energy costs are far lower in Greece (and much of southern Europe) than say Germany or Benelux. That petrol is expensive universally across Europe is due to the amount of tax on it. | | | |

It’s doable in the uk too, it just depends on political choices. We have free entry to our main museums over here in Wales and a lot of subsidised and free ticket options for heritage sites. It depends what the government and its people see as important. Another issue for those sites you mention is that are council-owned and we all know how the councils have been hammered into the ground since 2010, so you can see why they are trying to get money from wherever they can. |

That's one way to look at it
The other being that it gives children from poorer families an opportunity to experience culture, history, art etc that would otherwise be completely out of reach to them
I think it's fantastic and love seeing young people engaging in interactive displays at places like the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, the railway museum in York or the National media museum in Bradford [Post edited 27 May 11:58]

That place is laughably expensive, so much so I very much doubt many locals go anymore. Last time I went it was £20 to see a Goat and some Butterflies, And from what I gather from people it's gotten exponentially more expensive.

That's one of the things that really struck me - the minimal difference between adults' and children's entry fees these days. |
Add in the fact that any concessions seem to end at about 14 in many places and it becomes really expensive when you have older teenagers, it's not like they suddenly get an income then ! | |
