What's your club v country balance index? 07:59 - Jun 6 with 4157 viewsNthQldITFC

If we said that:

10 represents someone who supports a club, but has absolutely no interest in a national team whatsoever, and...

0 represents someone who supports a national team, but has absolutely no club allegiance whatsoever...

...where do you stand on that scale?

I'm probably an 9 I guess, but have been a 10 in the past.

edit: didn't even have the correct answer to my own question at first!

10 for Ipswich vs England, 9 if it’s Mexico, 9.5 for any of the other Latin American teams at the WC

Has to be a 9 for me .

I follow all things ITFC , but not the England stuff.

To be honest I find most England games boring , there's a lack of passion from players .

It has to be a 10 because Ipswich winning or losing is infinitely more important than England winning/losing. That said, I am happy when England win, but there is no passion in the national side, and there hasn't been for decades. I prefer to follow Uruguay in international competitions (rugby and football); they are a small country who play with great passion, always punching above their weight. They call it the 'garra charrua' (the spirit of the Charrua, an indigenous people whose tenacity and bravery were legendary).

7 I'd say. I obviously want england to win every tournament and I'm desperate to see them win a tournament but would i trade England success for Ipswich success? Every time.

interesting set of results so far, as what Im taking from it is the vast majority cares little for England internationals, therefore I wholly expect the World cup to be completely ignored on this board for the whole duration ;)

yeah fat chance of that happening :D

5 for me - I see them as two sides of the same coin but each to their own.

I would say I’m an 8 generally. However if we get as far as the semis or even the final that will move to about a 5.

Agree.

The world cup and Euros are never going to clash with Town. I can't remember if any league one games clashed when we went down but I think the club would have enough sense to try and move the game if they had any control.

I love Town 100% but every summer I am very much an England fan (men and women's teams) when there is a big tournament and Town are not playing competitive games.

Yeah it’s such an odd question.

Over the years my club / country balance has moved and become more weighted towards Ipswich from 50/50. It pretty much happened when that 'Golden Generation ' went to the WC in South Africa who didn't seem to really give too much of a toss unlike the Italia 90 squad. It doesn't help that I don't have much of an emotional attachment to many current England players who, to my view are they themselves more interested in club and Champions league over country.

Only ever watch England when the tournaments start and I always hope we will win it even though it's unlikely, especially this one. I would say I am an 8.5, though a World Cup win would be fantastic.
So if the choice was between a Town Premier League Title and an England World Cup win, what are you going for?

9-10 International football just seems so pointless these days.

I always think this question (that comes up plenty) is particularly stupid because they obviously don’t play each other and you can support both, one without have the weekly ups and downs. Weird people are answering a the question with different scores outside the tournaments. Well obviously, it’s kind of what everything leads up to, every other summer. Your club team isn’t playing then either, so it’s not like they clash. Just an odd question in general really.

Also if either one is having a miserable time of things and the other is in a better period, it provides the chance to buy into football matches that have a bit more and stake and emotion connected to them than during the previous club season, say like in 2018.

Exactly where I'm at, I find the whole club vs country debate really odd. There is literally no chance anyone will ever have to make that decision.

I've no problem with people who don't follow their country, each to their own, but I do feel a bit sorry for them.

International tournaments are great fun and they're missing out.

The meta on this question is fascinating to me. It was intended to be no deeper than trying to get a handle on how invested in international vs club football people are, but there somehow seems to be something seen as judgemental in it, which is completely baffling to me.

Again, neither the OP nor this response are judging anyone for supporting or not supporting a national team, and - I can't believe I'm typing this - of course there's no suggestion that you'll ever have to choose between the two, that's just massively illogical.

10. I am not happy at being unable to support my country football exploits, but since Sven Goran's day, I have been unable to. Nothing to do with Sven per se as I had nothing against him (R.I.P) and am not even sure what changed my attitude as I was fully behind England through the 70s, 80s and 90s.

9.5 nowadays
Shame really how WC /euros interest has decreased, our boss used to give us a half day off for the big games, to much excitement and beer.
The players don't seem as relatable, and the apparent sole interest in money grabbing has soured the competition too.
- oh, bit like the prem then :(

10, which probably lowers to 9 or 8 during tournaments. I just don't find the national team remotely likeable. Want us to do well but it's not an emotional experience it's more entertainment than rabid supporting.

I'm pretty much a 10, I don't watch any England games and have zero interest generally. If there was a town player in the team, I'd probably watch it though. I've watched a lot of Ireland games when we had four or five town players in the team, for example. Never thought that's the football I'd be watching in 2026.

Internationals during a football season are a complete annoyance but once the tournament starts I'm really up for a match. Shame they're on quite late.

I'd say a 9 on average throughout the year though.

Probably a 9. I used to watch England beginning with the 1982 World Cup. I vividly remember that the key turning point for me was Lampard's goal that never was against Germany in 2010 when 'The Golden Generation' floundered. I just laughed and said to myself 'that's me done now'. I think I've watched 3 England games since. Even Southgate's run didn't force me to start again. This tournament I'll just look at the news the next morning for the results.

10.

Italia 90 was the last decent WC.
