I really enjoyed the game last night but one thing that I’ve realised annoys me is Pickford (he generally annoys me) kept hopping backwards with the ball. I saw Walton do it a few times this season as well. Since when has that been a thing?

Poll: How many of yesterdays team will be in the team for the 1st game of next season?

I don’t rate him particularly. Good shot stopper but has a clownish element to him.

That and his insistence on punching everything.

Just the best English goalkeeper for the last 40 odd years 😂

Is that him or better players in front of him? Open question as my impression of him might be totally wrong.

I'm not convinced by him either. Everything he does looks scruffy and awkward. He puts the defence under pressure with some bad decision, choosing to punch (poorly) when there's a simple catch on, poor choice of pass, for example. I'm not sure he's even that good a shot stopper.

It looked like Croatia targeted him with long shots. They did quite a few.

Interesting. I presume you're thinking since Shilton

I'd go

1. Seaman
2. Flowers (would have played a lot more if it wasn't for Seaman)
=3. Robinson
=3. Pickford

Probably England's best and most consistent performer of the last decade.

Top keeper.

It could be nostalgia, but it does seem we were pretty stacked for decent keepers in the 90s

Seaman, Martyn, Flowers, Walker, Woods, an emerging David James

Maybe they'd all be useless now as I'm sure none of them were any good with their feet

Robinson was absolutely awful for England. I remember a World Cup/ European Championship game against Sweden (I think) when from a long throw, he allowed the ball to bounce two or three times, didn't get anywhere near it and gave the opposition forward the easiest goal. Not his only error at that time. Awful keeper.

Speaking about Shilton, why was he the main England keeper for so long?

At Italia 90 (first WC that I can really remember) he could barely move - were all the other English keepers abysmal?

How could Flowers and Robinson be above Pickford ??

I think it's a way to bait players into pressing you in order to open up space and passing angles, then bypass their press.

I think Chris Woods was there, and Dave Beasant certainly was! Woods was Graham Taylor’s choice after Shilton hit pensionable age. Seems crazy that in 2010 we were down to Rob Greene..

I like him. Think he had an up and down game last night but he’s been so solid for us.

And he can save a penalty in a shoot out which his predecessors always found difficult.

Well i can only go off the ones I've seen in my lifetime so not really sure on Shilton to compare him. I'd have Pickford clearly above the ones you have listed though.

Definitely an argument to be made for Pickford being above the others but Seaman was miles ahead

He was sadly past it by 1990. Chris Woods and Dave Beasant were 2 and 3 but nowhere near international class.

Banks then Shilton and Clemence were great goalies.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

I remember we played Plymouth in the league cup maybe 2-3 years later and poor old Shilts was beaten by a Neil Thompson 25 yarder. It swerved a bit but he sort of dived with his feet in mud and didn't leave the ground! Always stuck with me.

In the early 80's Shilton was top notch at his peak though. Is it sacrilege to say we would have won the title if we had him or Jennings in goal for us? (probably)

No it is not sacrilege. I think we would have won the league probably twice had we got Jennings in - which we very nearly did. In 76/77 and 80/81.

Cooper did well, but Jennings with those shovel sized hands was a step up.

Yes, Shilton in his time was brilliant. But it’s often the case as keepers get old, he did look like his feet were glued to the ground.
