What’s with this meltdown? 21:37 - Jun 19 with 4185 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

I’m not massively excited by it but it seems to be a toys out of the prem job before a summer signing had been made, which is likely more important to our chances of survival.

He kept Bournemouth up playing a pragmatic style after they started the season terribly, he then kept Wolves up the next year. McKenna has been trying to set us up to play much more pragmatically for our return. Yes the Wolves 6 months was a disaster but how can we discount the two years previously? Literally has experience keeping teams up, which is the only aim. I’m assuming everyone would take 17th if offered to them now?

I get it’s not a huge name but not sure we are quite there yet. O’Neil will be backed in the market. It’s a very tough gig to walk into, he could probably do with some support.

the king is taking a career break, long live the king.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

As you say signings will be key

He signed semenyo that helped bournemouth

Cuhna who helped wolves

We need to get that level of signing.

As meltdowns go, this seems pretty damn tame.

And for what it's worth I think he's a bad choice but none of the options were very good either. Think it'll end in tears but...

We've got super Gary O'Neill?

Honest answer is that he is a very bad manager and feels like the laziest choice possible.

His underlying data in the Bournemouth had them as consistently the worst team in the league, they just had a purple patch right at the end of the season where they basically fluked their way to 5 wins in 7 keeping them up.

At Wolves he just had to outperform what at the time where statistically the 3 worst promoted teams in history to stay up, and once again the underlying data was poor.

Then came 24/25 where he was an active disaster, and Vito replaced him and turned Wolves into one of the best sides in the league for half a season.

He then only matched Roseniors record at Strausborg, and given Roseniors recent Chelsea spell doesn't act as a good comparator.

His style of football is dull and he is an ex budgie. When we were told "looking at all the markets" and then are given this, I can see why people are really annoyed.

”… end of the season where they basically fluked their way to 5 wins in 7…”

Or alternatively beat teams in the lower half of the league that you need to be beating to stay up.

Bournemouth 2–1 Fulham
Leicester City 0–1 Bournemouth
Tottenham Hotspur 2–3 Bournemouth
Southampton 0–1 Bournemouth
Bournemouth 4–1 Leeds United

Such a better appointment I think than OGS who had no idea how to scrap at the bottom.

Too many looking atnegstoves. His first season with Wolves, where he took over barely before the season started as that Lopetegi guy left them, he got 14th and an fa cup.quarter final. We'd take that now......

Keeping Bournemouth up was an achievement (that poor start was a win and 3 defeats, Arsenal, Man City and a thrashing by Liverpool). His sacking from the outside seemed harsh but has proved to be the correct decision.

Wolves had finished 7th, 7th, 13th, 10th and 13th in the preceding seasons. Was it an achievement to keep an established team up? Maybe, against the backdrop of player sales. It was a poor end to that season though with 1 win (Luton), 2 draws (Burnley and Forest) and 7 defeats.
I have no doubt he would have taken Wolves down in the next. They had a difficult set of early fixtures and injuries but ill discipline set in and he seemed totally overwhelmed.

pretty much my view, after all the talk by ashton of scouring all the markets, and attracting the best we've gone for someone off the managerial merry-go-round of sacked usual suspects.

will get behind him as i did with lambert and give him a chance, but if he starts poorly gon will be gone pretty quickly!

hope we don't give him a lambert-esque 5 year contract or anything like mckenna's wages...

I understand if people are a little underwhelmed but he's a much better appointment for Solskjaer, who has nothing going for him other than being mates with the previous manager. And regardless, if we don't get our recruitment right then it won't matter who is in charge, we'll go down.

Pretty sure O'Neil walked into a newly promoted team when they were in a right mess after Liverpool beat them 9-0 and kept them up comfortably.

So, he done that with a team where Parker was in charge that entire summer.

Comments?

He didn’t quite walk in, he’d been there a year as a coach.

It is a forum. We can express our feelings. Lordy.

Of course I get criticized for expressing mine all the time when I dared questioning recruitment or that we were underachieving at times over the last few years. Some posts seem a bit over the top convinced of how bad it will be and that he will for sure be sacked by Christmas etc, that’s more fear mongering than expressing disappointment in the appointment. He’s here now and deserves a shot at proving people wrong if nothing else.

Isn’t a vast pool of options if Premier League experience was important for the decision makers but I just disagree with the principle of hiring on that basis if the answer ends up being Gary O’Neil.

Would like nothing more than to be wrong but he looks to me like a manager who would have taken Wolves down (in a season with a very bad bottom three by premier league standards) had they not got rid of him and that is effectively dining out on a purple patch at the end of a season with Bournemouth.

Yeah, I’m not excited by it but I understand it.

I’d rather take a gamble if we someone manage to stay up that gambling with say the Cardiff chap at this stage if we are going to chuck serious money at it.

Unless we have a A+ window, I don’t think anyone has that much of a chance. So that’s where most of my attention will be this summer.

I think this has been a decent thread 4J, with some good comments posted.
I think someone else has used the phrase "meh" to describe this appointment and that is where I am.
Of the two I would have preferred OGS, but I'll back O'Neil in the same way I've backed every other manager over the years.
Until I don't!
No melt down here mate.

I think I made the mistake of going on one particular thread and opening twitter. I’d have preferred GON over OGS personally and yes plenty of good points.

Pretty uninspiring list overall. Let’s see what happens.

Meltdown, what meltdown?

Calling it that, & referring to forumites “throwing their toys out of their prams” when all they’ve done is express opinions that include both disappointment and acceptance re potential future managers, is more of a meltdown than anything else I’ve seen on the subject on TWTS*.

* Reading it through, am going to let the typo stand, seems quite appropriate

It’s not that exciting but the timing has screwed us with the WC ruling out a lot of names and a few possibles having surgery or career breaks.

I can see why we have gone GON here, has a record of keeping unfancied teams in the prem, some good recruitment.

OGS would have been the wrong choice, only managed Besiktas for 29 games since 2021, only experience at the poor end of the prem was Cardiff which didn’t go well.

GON did well at Strasbourg and in the Prem with Wolves and Bournemouth who were comparable to us. Seems a good and well respected coach.

The only Muff in Town.

I think an ongoing problem with some fans will be the told you so-ers. That will have a high bar of better football and being clear of relegation. We are likely, and would have been with McKenna too, to be skirting that 19th to 16th group all season, probably a few points under the line but toughing it out. This would have got McKenna and possibly even an exciting foreign type fans took to, a bit of backing and credit and hope, but I fear it converts to didly squat with GON.

I say this all as someone very much uninspired by him, but accepting the rationale and reality of what next season may involve.

The hope and thinking must be that he’s taken a lot from all that. To some extent I get it as an appointment, and, as a club, whilst we’re in the PL, we have only a very small chance of staying up whoever is in charge so it’s hardly going to attract a Frank type.

Player recruitment remains the key thing this Summer for me. That’s the part of the setup that has been woefully short in recent times, and I need a lot of convincing that we’re capable of solving that with the current setup.
