Loving this format in the World Cup 20:29 - Jun 26 with 2278 viewsGlasgowBlue

People were saying that the final group games would be dead rubbers but so many teams have pulled out a result to qualify in third.

Plus it’s fooking hilarious seeing Scotland go from 2nd to 8th in the 3rd place league in a matter of days.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

To qualify in third. Enough said.

I don't think people did say that. Surely there would be more dead rubbers if 2 go through?

The fact only 4 third places don't get through means only 16 teams don't qualify for the last 32.....Its a lot of games for just 16 teams to go.

The format is good for the third places but then we get a situation like the other night where 2 teams know a draw is enough

Also, surely the teams in the first groups are at a disadvantage to the ones in the latter groups.

I suspect Scotland still would have lost, if not by more, but if they knew they needed a goal or 2 after 3-0 down, they may have just gone for it.

As with any system, there are good points and bad points.

only panama have scored less in this world cup than scotland, and their only goal was from a midfielder. might have been an idea to try out your other strikers.

couldn't have done worse!

It is a bit of a farce this 48 format.

Take Algeria v Austria Sunday morning.

Austria 2nd, and Algeria 3rd, both teams can only finish 2nd or 3rd, Austria currently 2nd.

Team who finishes 2nd will play Spain, team who finishes 3rd will play Switzerland.

Who wants 2nd? they are going to play to lose.

Saying that some great games and plenty of goals, over 3 a match which is unheard of in tournament football nowadays.

At least when the nonsense of the group stage is over though it is down to Knock Out football and for most people I guess the real start of the WC.

Oh, Engerland are going to crap the bed as usual.

Algeria get beat by 2 they go below Scotland but to think one or more of Cape Verde, Belgium and Congo not to get results would be surprising.

Algeria and Austria are going to play out a draw so they both qualify

We already had the same with Australia vs Paraguay. Both were guaranteed 2nd and 3rd, but a draw guaranteed they both got 4 points and meant the 3rd place team would definitely qualify. Predictably, neither side took any risks and played out a 0-0.

Not quite West Germany vs Austria in 1982, but knowing the head to head logic beforehand like this year, there is more possibilities to know the 'optimal' results.
