At the end of this match.

Quite the announcement. Baz to follow?

Surprised the banhammer hasn’t been swung yet.

Good bit of theatre and entertainment, which is what it's all about. Wicket with his first ball after announcement, and then a quick 30 off 20 to finish his England career. He's done it his way to be fair to him.

Seems a bit of a shame though. Same as it was with Broad (three years ago!), surely both had/have more to offer still?

Another mentally weak Englishman

So the steady decent into meltdown and inevitable ban begins. It’ll be so sad to see you go.

One of only three players with 7,000 runs and 200+ Test wickets, one of the great test all rounders.

Hits the most sixes in Test cricket history.

Highest number six score: 258 against South Africa, a record for that batting position.

Engineered England’s 2019 50-over World Cup victory and anchored the successful 2022 T20 World Cup final chase. Both quite remarkable considering what he suffered in the 2016 T20 final.

Played arguably the greatest Test innings ever (135*) against Australia.

I agree he may not be one for the purist but seems to be a very unique leader who shouldered more responsibility than most and certainly one of the greats imo.

Fair enough. I stand by my original comment, he’s had a fine career and those numbers stack up as totals. Think there’s more to it, what are his averages for batting and bowling, I would without seeing the info assume he’s below the others above him And around him on average?

He’s been a fantastic player for the big moments and his career has been very good, loved watching him especially the 2019 final and the Headingly test they are moments that will stay with me.

I like Stokes, but this is the most self indulgently bizarre end to a career I can remember. Retires during the test (which is a bit odd, surely before or after?), and in what is a series decider chasing a tough but achievable total just says "f**k it" and attacks it like a T20. Particularly with New Zealand's weakened attack we should have played proper cricket tonight, with the actual openers, and then see where we are when their bowlers started to tire tomorrow.

Have no idea where they go from here, seems like the mess of the winter hasn't actually been sorted at all, and I don't see who they can go with as the next captain, doesn't feel like Brooks is ready or the right personality for it at present.

Says it was always going to be a tactical decision for him to open in the second innings. Bo llocks tbh.

Given the way they are batting, you do wonder if it's the last throes of Bazball

Doubt this would be a popular view or a view held by many, but cricket isn't 'that' deep, which is why it's such a brilliant sport. For that reason, I think it's okay.

Remarkable comment from a nation whose highest cricketing achievement is occasionally making it to a World Cup qualifier.

Ben Stokes retires as arguably one of the greatest Test match cricket all-rounders of his generation, architect of one of the most extraordinary batting performances in the history of the sport at Headingley 2019, and the man who transformed England Test cricket from a laughing stock into the most watchable team on the planet.

Not just that but was strong enough put his mental wellbeing first to take time away from the game when dealing with the death of his father.

Your “mentally weak” comment is not just wrong but insulting, what a sad angry little man you must be.

Just my opinion. The anger seems to be yours?

Stokes. What a player. Won’t see his like again for a very very long time. Thank you for some unbelievable memories over a prolonged period.

We will be an average team without him.

I would suggest he was mentally shot and just wanted to get it over with.

The ideal would have been for them to play normally and Stokes to come in and play the match-winning innings from a solid start with the top order. Instead, he decided he was going to come out swinging and finish his career hoping for a blaze of glory.

If you read a few bits from the last couple of months, there is a lot that implies after his accident hes really struggled. I would assume the incident and it's handling has been the final straw.

He always seemed better & happier leading teams on the pitch than as formal England captain off it, where he just wanted to be one of the lads.

Maybe he didn’t want to play any other way than unmodified Bazball; and if that weren’t to continue under a different captain, it’d explain his retirement from the international game altogether.

Just speculating, no idea of his actual reasons. Maybe he just needs a break, McKenna style. Must be a helluva strain living in the goldfish bowl that goes with the England cricket captaincy.
