None of those 3 make any difference whatsoever

No, we'd have found a different way of f-cking it up. Would have made no difference.

If we'd taken at least two of those three we might not have got to a position where we could moan about effectively chucking away a World Cup semi final.

We had Mainoo on the bench, he's a better player than Wharton and Tuchel didn't use him.
I don't think Mcguire makes much difference, ok he potentially would be shouting louder for the players to get out of the box, but overall I thought both CHs had good games.
Agree re Trent

I’m feeling exactly the same after that though. What a cock up.

It wasn't the personel, it was the tactics.

There's nothing between Wharton/Mainoo and Burn/Maguire.

Trent is still baffling. Especially post Livramento, but I think Tuchel still would have made the same decisions.

He's got to take this one on the chin, it's on him and only him.

It was all a bit odd from Tuchel. As you say we had Mainoo out there, who’s has a brilliant back end to the season and we don’t see him even when Rice could barely walk in the Norway game. Toney is used for the first time with 3 minutes of football left despite Kane running on empty at times for the last couple of games. It’s a kind of anti-McKenna style where you don’t trust your squad and would rather drop off the pace of the game than inject new energy. All very odd.

For me the Gordon sub was the strangest. Ok at the start of the tournament he looked a £2m player at best but he has grown into the tournament. Not just from his desire to attack/run but also his defending.
I didn't think he looked like he was running on empty last night, but he takes him off and basically Spence has nobody helping him on our left against Messi. Even worse Spence had probably caused the Argies more problems in defence than anyone, but the Gordon sub meant his attacking was also nullified.

Trent still puzzles me. He's a good one to bring on if you need a goal purely because his crossing and set pieces are excellent. .

Ironically, I think Henderson would have been a good one to come on last night. An older, experienced head to try and get a grip of the game.

Absolutely agree with this.

The second that sub took place, the mindset was "we can't do any more, need to hang on" whereas I felt it was two teams largely cancelling each other out and we retained an attacking threat to keep them from controlling the entire game.

Oh well.

It was a mistake, but had we held on with a defensive masterclass, we'd all be sitting here calling Tuchel a genius.

Easy in hindsight....time forget about it now and move on.

Complete disagree.

I think it is essential to have players in your team who are elite on the ball. Maybe they wouldn't have stopped Tuchel playing 10 centre backs but I think you need those profiles.

We saw with Argentina the balls they put in the box, at one point we had Konsa whipping balls in from out wide. I dont see a world where you dont want the option of Trent putting balls in the box in a tournament where you will need to win cagey games

Im suprised to see so many saying burn is a better option than mcguire. At lb of course but when you are calling on a cb to go in a three its mcguire imo.

And he clearly didnt trust mainoo. Why not?

Trent also has use as a squad player as he can cover CM, and he has a superb range of passing from there.

Mystifying!

Quite obvious he and Tuchel have had a falling out.

I agree - we wouldn't have lost if Maguire played those last 30 minutes. He gets his head to everything, yet yesterday 5.9" MacAllister was getting on the end of crosses. We lacked a physical leader at the back.

Had we held on, I would be saying that we had got away with one, bearing in mind they hit the post twice and had other chances (as well as the two goals).

Tuchel made a similar mistake against Norway when he brought on Eze, took off an attacking threat Gordon and withdrew our main attacking threat Bellingham to a deep midfield role where he lost all influence in the game. He rectified that mistake later in the game. He didn't get away with it against Argentina.

I'm sorry, but genius isn't a word that immediately springs to mind.

Maguire was a mainstay of the last three times England have done exactly the same previously.

Gibbs-White, I get your point. Cole Palmer even.

But the three you mention, less impactful.

I would certainly have taken Wharton, Rice wasn’t fully fit, Henderson aging, Mainoo not trusted ?

I would have taken Trent as would be useful against weaker/low blocks.

McGuire no, as worse than in the squad.

The only Muff in Town.
