| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 08:20 - Jul 17 with 1135 views | dirtyboy | Just for some reference here, if we get £30m for him, with the way finances work, it ‘could’ free up around £60m in available funds over 5 years. The impact of player trading is massive. Not an easy player to replace but would give us a huge boost | | | |

Yeah, it's worth remembering what the additional headroom from the sale of Jobe Bellingham allowed Sunderland to do last year. It's not usual to sell one of your best players upon promotion, but it's also not necessarily a disaster.

I don't want him to leave. The left wing is the one position we no not need to strengthen, with Jaden and Clarke. But there are too many stories linking him with a move away to ignore. I think iof he goes then it is better he goes now. We suffered greatly with the Omari situation last year.

It isn't a coincidence that he goes out and gets a new agent and then these things come out in the press. You'd like to think that if there was a good time for him to go, it is now with the Premier league funds and status to replace him. I think he lacks some of the physicality required for the Prem but agree that we will miss his quality.

| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 07:06 - Jul 17 by Len_Brennan | I do find this one strange, we haven't just been relegated or even stayed in the Championship, we have been promoted to what is generally accepted as the best league in world football. He has proven himself to be an exceptional player at Championship level, a flat track bully if you will, who has his own personal goal of the season competition due to the regularity of his top class finishes. But, for one reason or another, he is unproven in the Premier League, so why wouldn't he want to show everyone, himself included, that he is good enough to play at that level? McKenna really wanted him for our left side last time we went up, so he clearly thought he had the quality required; he wanted him ahead of Odobert & Jack Clarke, and only for Aston Villa messing him & us around, he would have gotten him early on. Due to injuries, when he did finally arrive, he was primarily played on the wrong side, so we can't really judge him a failure for that, when he came in with very little football played & them picked up a bad injury himself. What we did see, and continued to see in the Championship, is his workrate; he tackles & tracks back, something he had from the start with us. Conversely, Jack Clarke had to change his game a lot since joining us, in order to bring that element to his game, and will be much better off for that this time around in the PL. Philogene has changed agents & this 'story' has appeared in a number of sources now, so there definitely seems to be something in it. Those who are saying they don't care, & let him off, might be undervaluing him somewhat, because he is a very talented player with the ability to create space in tight areas, in order to get a shot away ... and what a shot it is when it comes. I don't know how much we will get for him (has to be £22m + some profit) but it will definitely take £30m+ to replace him in the current market. It's a pity for me. |
Potentially a player fully controlled by his agent, we've seen it before and we'll see it again. Now not saying that ultimately isn't going to be the best for the player professionally and financially, but sometimes its all about the benefits to the agent rather than anything else. You could also argue with some of the clubs listed he isn't going to be involved in any potential relegation battles. Plus a move to a team like Benfica, and a guaranteed top 6 finish, never did any players career any harm. I genuinely do believe he has a desire within himself to improve, he moved to Hull and stayed with us in the Championship, a player not up for a battle doesn't make those moves. If, and a big if, he does want a move let him go we don't need a long transfer saga. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 07:24 - Jul 17 by jayessess | Yeah, not generally a recipe for success to sell your best attacking player upon promotion. Couple of seasons ago Sheffield United and Burnley sold theirs and were basically relegated before the season began. You don't want to be making your squad worse before you've even started seriously improving it. I don't see what good Jaden thinks is going to come of agitating for a move really. If anything his reputation will have declined slightly since joining us so it's unlikely that we'll get appealing offers. The clubs quoted - Roma, Bologna, Benfica - aren't paying £30m for a Championship player. He'd be better off actually playing well enough to justify the kind of move he wants. |
All true, but it does go someway to explaining why we are looking at Wingers alongside our apparent addiction to goalkeepers

| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 09:00 - Jul 17 with 892 views | Garv | Objectively, I don't 'want' him to leave. He's obviously got quality, he's a good athlete and works hard. The issue I have is that we have two left sided wingers who both recently proved they weren't good enough or physical enough in the premier league. I struggle to see both of them having improved so much so that won't be the case again. We know neither can realistically play another position, so it's a risk to assume we don't need to strengthen that area. With how Clarke finished last season and that he was in my opinion the better of the two in the PL last time, I'd be inclined to keep Clarke and sell Philogene, especially if he actively wants to go and if we get a good fee. | |

Unfortunately I think Philogene comes across as perhaps seeing himself as bigger than the club. He wants to play at PL but gives the impression he feels he needs a " bigger club". Don't ask me why I feel this about him, its just the impression he gives me. I could be totally wrong of course. As for his game, well McKenna coached these tracking back / tackling attributes into him because they weren't evident when he joined us. He is rarely visible in away games and had a lovely purple patch of cutting in on his right foot to.unlease eye catching goals. Brilliant. But it doesn't happen very often and I also feel Clarke is more of a team player, and shows better all round play than Philogene, ( but in truth both are lightweight for the PL). So if he does leave, which looks likely just remember his orevious club have a hefty sell on percentage so once again we dont get the full value of players who wever paidva hefty price for then decide to jump ship just 2 seasons later. I accept Town are a stepping stone for many of these young players, but perhaps we need to be a bit smarter when securing their signature for the inevitable future sale. I totally accept / understand this is far from an easy situation, but as a club im not sure we're quite on it in these deals. Time will tell, I guess.

| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 09:56 - Jul 17 with 763 views | Guthrum | I'm slightly intrigued as to why he might want to go to Italy, rather then playing in the Prem (which probably is the highest-profile league in the world). Possibly there's a better chance of European football with those teams, which are regulars on that stage. | |

Back of envelope... Think £22m was the reported fee. It was a 4.5 year contract of which he's served 1.5 years, so we will have amortised 1/3 of it. We'd have to book the rest of the fee upon sale (approx £14.6m) and I imagine Villa will have a sell-on, which might eat some of the £8m headline profit. So you'd end up with somewhere between £13-16m book profit. So, you'd give yourself headroom for some mix of up to 307k per week in wage costs or £80m in transfer fees spread over 5-year contracts in this season's books, provided you were confident you could keep paying the wages and fee amortisation over the other 4 years.

Perhaps being harsh, but it's easier to shine in other leagues and the style is different. The Premier League is incredibly competitive and on the whole our mid-table clubs are better than the other leagues. Look at someone like McTominay who would have easily been able to continue playing in the Premier League but went to Napoli and is reaping the rewards.

However, I'm just not convinced we've got it in us to go out and sign a comparable replacement. Doing absolutely nothing in the transfer market at the moment...

Cynical I know, but his new agent will be agitating for a move as he makes a lot more from a transfer than him simply staying at Town.

Exactly, get some players in first then start thinking about offloading our arguable best player on an over inflated fee once we have done our bit. Jack Clarke is a stand out championship player but not PL standard, if we off load Jaden we will need another left winger and we are just making it more and more difficult with less and less time to put it right.

There's lots to consider now isn't there. I actually think selling him, if we could get a good fee, will give us a big leg up in a position we don't 'need' with Clarke and Mehmeti both being good players in that position. I'm a fan of Clarke over Philogene, but appreciate Philogene's ceiling may be higher. Clarke won me over with his change in how he worked last season to match how Philogene covered the ground.

| ‘Philogene ready to leave Ipswich’ - BBC on 11:35 - Jul 17 with 476 views | ITFCSG | Letting one of our best players leave without targeting a replacement is suicidal. He may not cut it in the PL just yet but at this rate we will need to sign a brand new XI in the space of less than 2 months and getting them to gel. Plus getting rid of the dross either through sale or loan. Now that KM is gone, no more excuses about the manager not needing any players. The onus is solely on Ashton and his team to deliver quality signings instead of wasting time with more PR bs. | | | |
