I have no idea regarding the Japanese midfielder we are trying to sign but if we do manage to get it done could he be out version of Xhaka who did so much in Sunderlands success last season . Just glad we have some midfield links it obviously had to come .

Yep - we definitely lacked a really good, experienced midfielder last time in the premiership. A step too far for Morsy, Luongo was shot, Phillips was atrocious and Taylor did his best, but wasn't quite there.

Matusiwa and Morita would be an excellent choice of midfielders to pick form. Plus bringing in two more (and probably Taylor as a squad player).

Poll: Chances of a Town New Signing Announcement(s) Today ?

He could be. There's certainly that chance.

But in terms of the evidence that exists at the time of the potential transfer, Xhaka had around 400 Premier League and Bundesliga matches when he signed for Sunderland, the majority of those for Arsenal. He was still in favour for his country (and indeed, this summer he has been captain of a Swiss side who made it to the Quarter Finals of the world cup, only being knocked out after extra time by a certain Argentina).

Morita, by contrast, doesn't have proven credentials in a top league (although I'm not going to be grudging about his 100+ appearances for Sporting), and wasn't selected for the world cup.

So although he may well shine, I don't think it would be quite the coup that Sunderland somehow pulled off.

Would be pleased enough with this transfer. Then we need another one. And another one. And a consonant please Carol.

It's not Xhaka, no but it is a great start and would be a shrewd signing on a free. We really lacked that experienced, defensively disciplined top level midfielder last time in the PL. Cajuste was very flashy and show reel but behind all that was a defensive car crash of a player. He is someone adept at sniffing danger and letting the more flamboyant players ahead of him play.

Agree re us needing plenty more where that came from though. We will need some legs in midfield too to supplement Morita/Matusiwa for a start.

I thought that was a subtle John Stones ITK for a split second, before quickly realising it was a good old board word association game. I'll chalk it off to being tired.

Jack Taylor was surely the most improved player last season. I have a sneaky feeling that he might just surprise a few - he quickened up, he's got some strength now (I think he'd hold his own in the muscle battle of the prem). But I'm slightly worried if he's quick enough.

I wonder if we might see a bulked up, faster Egeli this season.

He's injured and missed the world cup is how I read it. Could be the new KFP.

Let's face it we know F ALL about these players, hopefully the recruitment nerds do...

I mean he is not that niche. He started in UCL quarter finals last season.

I am not sure if he was injured but Japan have some good players in that position.

KFP?

I presume you mean Phillips but it sounds like you muddled him up with fried chicken.

The thing about Xhaka was that he had experience of playing in the Premier League which this Japanese player hasn't. But I doubt anyone of the level of Xhaka with Premier League experience is likely to be available.

Let's hope we have unearthed a diamond anyway (assuming we can sign him)!

Xhaka is maybe a top champions league level player still, Sunderland worked the oracle on that and many other transfers, as did Leeds, as have many clubs at this level.

I wouldn’t set the bar so high. He doesn’t need to be that good to improve us massively, and that’s part of the problem.

We’ve spent as much as them, much more over two years.., they get great quality and value in the market. We don’t.., we haven’t at any point under Ashton, so that’s a massive worry, because these links (other than this one) look much the same mistakes as we’ve made for two years now.

This guy at least is the perfect profile. Fingers crossed - getting the right partner for Mats would be massive!!

I will rework the last bit.

I know very little about any of the targets we are in for up to now, so until they play, I can't say.

Just how much do you think Sunderland did spend last season? £213M (net £156M).

How much have Town spent over two years? About £150M; net £30M last summer so £180M across two years.

You don't half spout some rubbish at times.

Whether or not we get good value time will tell. Some transfers work, some don't. Delap and Hutchinson did. Others will take longer to tell.
