It needs a long term strategy. He only has three years left which isn't enough time. He needs to set out his case for re election so he can see his plans fulfilled.

Help with the cost of living crisis, bringing utilities into public ownership, a big council house building programme, helping young people to get jobs and with their mental health. Not bad aims on day 1 are they? We aren’t getting a radical left wing government which is a pity, but it’s got to be better than the alternatives surely? (even with Mahmood in no 11) |

Good luck to him, he'll need it, problem with parties in the past 10-15 years is they are all internally fractured, so trying to get things done just gets kyboshed by backbenchers.

| Andy Burnham gonna be any good for us en? (n/t) on 15:49 - Jul 20 with 810 views | DJR | I have misgivings about his decentralisation proposals. In my view, very few, if any, reorganisations have improved things in the public sector. My view is that it is better just to make existing structures work. Instead, the government, say, has embarked on a serious of local government reforms, the new councils of which may well up with Reform in control and not willing to play ball, just as the Tory mayor of Teeside has allowed dodgy dealings to take place without central control . https://northeastbylines.co.uk I also feel is he is dramatically over-promising when it comes to what he can achieve. Why do politicians always do this? [Post edited 20 Jul 16:01]

| Andy Burnham gonna be any good for us en? (n/t) on 14:29 - Jul 20 by Billywitch | I think I read he is to increase foreign aid which will cost the country an additional £16bn Based on that alone I'd say he's a dangerous man |
if 0.5 of one per cent comes to £16bn, then burnham will have massively grown the country and we will be well able to afford it! principles (and the soft power that come with it) are well worth a few extra pennies

From HoC docs In 2024, although the UK provided £24.1 million in aid to several sectors (the largest was multisector/cross-cutting projects), it also received £24.5 million back in investment returns. As a result, in 2024 the UK received more aid from India than it gave, by about £0.4 million. Stay ignorant bro

I’d be interested to read that. What did we mean here by Aid? Isn’t that more an investment?

Not sure you understand how our aid budget works Billy - but to be clear, it largely funds projects that are run by charities, not by governments. So say in India, the charities will deliver aid/development work and will seek funding (some of which we may fund) but that is sfa to do with the Indian government. By refusing to fund aid in places like India, you are choosing to deny funding to projects that help the neediest of people - on the basis that those needy people happen to live in a place where a govt. doesn't serve them as well as they might. The people are not making the decisions (like funding a space program) any more than you or I make decisions for the UK govt.

Thanks for sending. Shows the whole “we give them aid when they have a space programme” rhetoric is nonsense. Also, it’s peanuts in the grand scheme of things. See! I told people I was a one nation Tory! [Post edited 20 Jul 16:57]

One of the reasons to provide aid is to reduce the chance of an immigration influx coming our way from those countries. You'd think Farage etc would be all for that wouldn't you?

But, for argument's sake, what if borrowing £1bn for Foreign Aid helped to save having to borrow £2bn for other costs, thanks to more beneficial trade deals, or not having to deal with the consequences of not having Foreign Aid?

| Andy Burnham gonna be any good for us en? (n/t) on 17:28 - Jul 20 with 489 views | Mullet | As someone who has seen what he's done in Manchester, there's hope and a case that he if he can replicate that nationally he will do well. He has decades of misrule and propaganda from the neo-liberals to undo, and it feels like he will be harshly treated from the getgo by the papers. What he did here was started by others, but he took it and ran with it. Not all of Greater Manchester has felt the benefits, the city centre has had a lot of Chinese and Arab money pour in and with it lots of homogenous skyscraper type buildings go up. It's not for everyone and a bit of a compromise. That said, having worked with people on various projects who know him and work with him closely, they spoke highly of him unprompted and honestly. Even things like "he promises to support everybody but gets too busy and overbooked so can't" was a memorable line from a friend of his. The biggest problem is, he's going to try and disrupt a very deep rooted order, the money flowing into London and the surroundings has always kept the country imbalanced as far back as the last millenia or so. How you ensure that those with the least get what they need and the people who have grown wealthier in their place are ok with that is balancing act. I don't think he or anyone can manage it. If he can cut through the noise and the bot attacks online he has a decent chance of impacting us all positively. He will be much more on the ground and shaking hands than Starmer ever could be, maybe that fundamental difference will give him some credit in the bank? | |
