I suspect no one is willing to match his Premier League wages. We might not have any choice in the matter, if it's the only offer on the table. It's more palatable than ripping up his contract.

Should have taken the £3M that was on offer in January. Think we demanded £6M from Derby at the time. Be interesting to see what he goes for this summer if it's permanent.

We were always likely to take a loss on this one tbh given the age we signed him at. No different say a Diop signing this year. The difference this time.. we are buying proven PL higher calibre.

Especially if what McAteer's family were spouting on socials was true, we would be lucky to get that for him. Not surprised he's been nowhere near anything since then.

I'd be interested in where we stand on profit/loss on player trading at the moment. Isuspect we're down, but that wouldnt be surprising as the players we're moving on were pretty much all signed in Lg 1, when we went up to the championship or in '24 when we went up to the Prem. We're upgrading again now, so not surprising if we make a loss. On the other side of the coin we made a decent whack on Delap and Hutch.

Quite obviously he wasn't bought with player trading in mind given he was 29 when we signed him and we paid £10m. [Post edited 23 Jul 10:35]

How are you viewing player trading though? If it’s to make a profit on every player that comes through the door that is never gonna happen. If it’s to generate decent figures after amortisation, figures that positively support future investment in signings then I imagine we are doing okay.
| Szmodics back to Derby… on 09:06 - Jul 23 with 2148 views | PioneerBlue | The Szmodics deal will likely always look like a fail and this is only basic estimated maths but what has he really cost a then PL and now PL club? c€3-4m on an amortised basis for 1 season of a few goals and a necessary squad place. That is small scale if we recover some fee for him and or mitigate final seasons of his contracted wages | |

He was never ever signed to make a profit. Not every deal has to be.

Indeed, we can't buy a whole team of 21yr olds, there are times where spending on experience is needed (obviously didn't work out with SS) but plenty of others have been a success.

Not sure anyone expected to make anything other than a loss on a player who was already 28, nearly 29 when we signed him. Our player trading model is around buying young promising players, (Emersonn for example), not 27/28 year olds.

| Szmodics back to Derby… on 10:01 - Jul 23 with 1629 views | _CliveBaker_ | I didn't like the signing at the time, seemed an awful lot of money for someone in their late 20's who had 1 good season in the 2nd tier on their CV. Couldn't see where he was meant to fit in our system either. Best off getting what we can for him from Derby and draw a line under it. | | | |

Up I'd imagine, although most of the spend is still in the squad, so the book value of that is debatable and unrealised until such a time as they move on.

Who have we made much of a loss on under Gamechanger? Even Szmodics won't be too big of a loss on his amortised cost when push comes to shove. Ogbene will be one we take a decent hit on for sure. We've made good profits on Delap, Omari and Broadhead. Woolfy/Baggott too who were pure profit as academy graduates.

I don't think you can use amortised cost in that calculation really, its just an accounting treatment and had the cost not been amortised you would've been more profitable through those periods. In the purest sense the best measure is probably the change in squad value less the net transfer spend. If that's a positive its a net gain.
