| Freddie Woodman (not a link) 18:46 - Jul 23 with 2938 views | BlueandTruesince82 | Freddie Wooddman is 29 years old and earns £25k a week (£1.3 m per year) as 3rd choice keeper for Liverpool. Aside from 3 years at Swansea (88) and 3 at PNE (127) hes never played more than 14 games in a season. He turns up, trains knowing he'll almost never play and pockets 25k pw. What a life that is. | |

Hell? £25k a week to train with access to the best medical facilities and keeping yourself in top shape? Can go on until he's in his late 30s earning a great wage. Everyone would rather play but sounds far from hell to me.

I can see both sides, at 29 he should be comming into his peak years as a GK but does his ability warrant 25k a week at a championship club which is where he'd need to be to play?

Absolutely but they both took on the role towards the end of their careers. At 29 to say I'm happy to be 3rd choice somewhere is somw mindset when your best years are ahead of you but agsin 25k a week is a lot of money

No doubt gets to travel the world aswell, both as part of pre season tours etc but also to be rolled out at events in the Middle East where a player is required I reckon being 3rd choice keeper at a top club is one of the best jobs on the planet - similar theory to the backup Qb in Blue Mountain State (now there’s a niche reference!)

He played i think 50 odd games for everton in years and I think 50 odd when he came back here but before Man C was always at least competing for the jersey. I think Arsenal was really tough on him, thought Seaman was retiring only to do a U turn and Wright finds himself back up to an Arsenal legend

But ultimately I would rather earn a lot less but feel like I'm making meaningful difference and actually doing something with my life. Which is exactly the case, I earn eff all, but enough to just about pay bills, and the work I do I think is valuable and meaningful, and it is to me.

Looks like 60 games for Everton over 5 years of which 33 were in 1 season so 27 games over 4 seasons so average just under 7 a season [Post edited 23 Jul 20:17]

I hear that, but don’t under estimate the pull of working at an elite club!

Quite a surreal night chatting about football and stuff Anyway I got asking about their funniest things in football and Razor started to refer to someone called “Bonus”. Long story short after about 5 minutes hearing stories about “Bonus “ I had to ask who they were on about. Turns out an old Liverpool keeper never used to play but always picked up his season bonus Tony Warner played zero games in 5 season bit made a fortune in “Bonuses” For the record as a side note both Razor and Deano were amazing company - most random night of my life to be fair

I wasnt suggesting he played a lot at Everton just that at least he was competing for the jersey. 3rd choice is a different and something that most gks do right at the end of their career. RW

Absolutely dont dispute that. Just making the point that Freddie is (and I think this true even if one's personal view is you wouldn't be happy as 3rd choice) a very lucky chap, its almost the perfect job, stay fit, travel, earn amazing money. Fantastic.

He was well liked over here, but Championship seems his level. (Or PL backup to the backup, obviously!)

I bet his dad, who had a very long career as a keeper in the lower leagues would have loved a season like that, even without the money.

Is Razor still off the booze? He did an after dinner speech thing at Wally FC a few years back and was hammered and it was a car crash. He started drinking at lunchtime and spent the evening just insulting everyone! Apparently a different guy though when sober.
