I know proof is in the pudding, but it’s on another level to last time we went up isn’t it?

These seem the kind of players we should have signed the first time around!

I agree with you. But many people from KmC and above has stated we was not ready for the unexpected promotion.
With a new manager and so many new needed faces/bodies coming in I am concerned on how fast the team will gel. Look how long it took last season.

The proof is in the eating.

Anyway, with a higher budget than we had last time, plus a hugely upgraded recruitment team you’d expect us to do better.

But yes, so far so good.

People said that at the time after our 1st pre season last time. Not sure what to make of it so far. Some seemingly solid prem players, yet to be convinced it’s of the quality to keep us up.

Hutchinson, Greaves, Delap and Phillips were ambitious singings at the time.

No idea how this lot will compare.

The proof is not in the pudding, that doesn't mean anything. However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

So I guess the proof of the transfer strategy is in the playing.

Yep it certainly looks that way hey.
A few reasons I think:
1. The baseline we're starting from is higher. The squad is much better and deeper. We're now replacing top championship players rather than League 1.
2. The recruitment/scouting behind the scenes network has had 3 years of groundwork.
3. We're a much more appealing proposition after 3 seasons back on a bigger stage. Can't imagine a Diop or Maeda being that interested in a move to us last time round..
4. Maybe we're being a bit more ambitious this time as well. There was definitely an element of preparing for the future last time, hence the championship all stars route

Let's see, could be totally wrong, but I'm feeling quite optimistic right now!

To be fair, they would say that wouldn’t they? Hardly going to say we were rubbish and didn’t know what we were doing!

I certainly sung Delap and Hutchinson's praises but sadly Phillips fell a little flat, looking forward to Greaves' encore this season.

On paper it seems a step up. They’re more top-level proven, either in domestic leagues or internationals. Impossible to know how they’ll do of course either individually or whether GON can mould them into a coherent team.

I'm fairly happy with the recruitment so far but I wouldn't say we've had a standout signing yet. Diop and Maeda make a lot of sense and feel solid signings. The keepers also seem good business. Fatawu is still very young and exciting type of player. Like him. Emersonn is an absolute wildcard really.

It's easy in hindsight to forget the excitement and downplay lost summers signings.

Philips
Cajuste
Oshea
Hutchinson
Delap
Jack Clarke
Muric
Greaves

In particular I thought were good signings. Most proved decent but obviously Muric and Philips didn't work out.

Others inc

Ogbene
Szmodics
Townsend
Johnson

Felt pretty solid.

At the time that was feeling like a big.window.

Of course we did late bring it the likes of Philogene and Enciso so we had some pretty good players in terms of transfer excitement. From where we had come from. Easy to forget.

Diop is real smart addition, at £8m that is really good business, but there is so much to do still it’s really hard to judge at this stage.

Emersonn is a potential, Fatawu is undoubtedly a talent, but there is so much more work to be done this window to build a competitive squad.

The calibre of CM we bring in as well as proven striker will make it break us ultimately. Got to get that bit of business right. Morita was an interesting profile for 1 of 2 minimum that we need. But probably right to step away/not offer long deal if risk was there from medical.

yes, but mainly on expenditure so far, but very similar too

New striker, similar to delap in goal return in previous season, difference is what we've spent
Fatawu - Clarke/Philogene type signing ( but im happy as i wanted him)
Keeper - loaning out i think i saw but yes different
keeper possibly coming in, difficult to know until we see him play if he's better than muric, he stops a lot of shots, but never seems to catch balls according to highlights, so we'll see
diop - Definitely much better type of signing
celtic fella, again difficult until we see how he gets on in prem.. similar to sammy s in that he's scored goals at a different level, played uptop last season a fair bit i think, but historically a 10?

What i really want to see is some proper CM signings. CM is so important and we've not sorted it, and not really been linked to any other than the 31 year old free agent who's now failed a medical as he has an injury

What is nice though is it's not championship top of the stat table and we've scouted around the world so that itself is different

Can’t disagree about the importance of strengthening CM. However (and I’d not appreciated this), there was an interesting recent article (might have been the BBC) that was reflecting that finding decent CMers for the PL is currently the hardest position to fill due to the scarcity of ready-made PL midfielders.

We’ve all talked about how hard No9s are to find (and there is another interesting article on that recently that effectively says the old-school, traditional No9 is not what clubs wants / need now), but the article makes a good argument that CM is currently the hardest to find, and this is why we’ve seen multiple £100M transfers recently for the position.

I dont know anything about the two Japanese players we've been linked with, but I get the impression that we're signing the better one of the two ( I reslise they play different poditions), would it be right in that assumption guys?

Anyone have a rough idea on budget or number of players we are looking to sign this summer? Thought I saw a suggestion in one of Phil's articles from a month or so ago it could be in excess of two summers ago but could be completely making that up!

I’d say £150-200M (so another £80-130M) with 5-6 more arrivals. Gonna be an interesting balancing act, as 1/3rd of the squad need to be home grown, and we’re diluting that mix with new signings.

Many, many threads discussing £200m and 10ish players, based on what's known about the amounts, amortisation and bodies in the squad.
