We have just spent £20m+ on Fatawu & given a new contract to Wes Burns, so they are presumably our intended match day playing options for the right side of the attack this season. But we had 3 others (4 if we include Ben Johnson) playing in this morning's friendly in Spain, who could also be vying for that position.
Casey McAteer played on the right, Sindre Egeli played in the centre (arguably his true position) & Cheio Ogbene moved over to play on the unfamiliar left side.
Of the 3, it was Ogbene, the one who everyone is expecting to be shown the door, who actually did well & who a neutral watching might think will play a part in the wars to come for us.
Egeli looks so far off it, it is worrying, given the fee & the huge expectation that most of us still have for him. I was hoping it would come good for him this season, with him having bulked up & the less frantic nature of the football in the PL, but perhaps a loan spell is the best thing for him, his development & his confidence.
I also wonder does McAteer really have a future with us as a PL club? He definitely finished last season better than he started it, but I fear that the step up to playing the best sides in Europe might have come at the wrong time for him.
Ogbene is technically limited, but is hard working, honest & effective; I still expect him to move on, but of the 3, he could probably do a job for us this year, in a way that I don't see from the other 2.

This was a friendly against a very low calibre opposition. If we are going to praise Ogbene performance in this kick about, we should also point out that we failed to win the game or indeed score a goal - which also doesn’t matter.

Not all of us expect Ogbene to be shown the door. I know I'm pretty isolated, but I've always said most people underrate him, and he has some good PL experience. He may well be moved on, but I'd like to see him kept as a squad player.
We also now need to be thinking about having enough home grown players in the squad - with all of the foreign recruits, we'll need to keep a core that qualify. That may well result in Cheo being moved on, for non-footballing reasons. | | | |

Just to be clear, I wasn't looking to base the season ahead on one game against a poor side. The reality is that we have seen McAteer & Egeli all last season, but over the summer, we tend to forget that we saw no basis for them suddenly arriving back & being quality PL level players. This morning's game was an actual reminder of that. We saw the same errors, choices & poor final ball/strikes that we got last season.
Of course there is still work to be done, but we saw last time out what a poor start to a PL season can do to a team; they'll need to show the manager something pretty soon, if they are going to avoid being shipped out, on loan at least, over the coming weeks.
Ogbene, by contrast, looked sharp, like he has done for Ireland. He is also the only one of the 3 to have already proven himself as capable of performing in the PL, which he did in that season with Luton.
This is a much broader point than just this morning's game, but the 2 who needed to use it most to show the manager what they can do, both continued to perform with last season's unimpressiveness, and the clock is ticking down to the Sunderland game. | |

Huge expectation of Egeli is the problem. Unfair comparisons with Haaland when he signed etc. He is a young player who is still developing, has moved to a new country leaving behind family and friends. The fee isn’t his problem, his old club wanted £20m and we obviously saw enough to think he was worth the outlay. He has the making of a good player but just needs time to settle etc. Not sure if we know what his best position is tbh, is he better in the centre playing as a no 10 or out wide on the right cutting in with his left foot. Hopefully GON and his coaching staff can get the best out of him. A loan might be best for him this season. GON has inherited a problem though we have so many wide players, how do you keep them all happy? | | | |

Just watched the game and it really was just an exercise.
Thought the two young lads in the middle (Barbrook + ?) looked really comfortable as did the young lad at the back with Kipre.
Egeli should have had a couple of goals but their keeper did well tbf.
Not a lot to be seen there though, no real patterns, players in different places, Ogbene and Johnson on the left and AlHamadi in a wide right, Egeli with Akpom who didn’t really get any service.
Just a run around.

These games mean zero. Yes they may provide a manager with insights of how a fringe player may go. Looking back at last seasons pre season Hirst was flying but his season took a heck of a while to get going.
Looking again at past seasons i think it is very important we get into the grove early as many of the big names take a while to get going. | | | |

I also think he has more to offer. He is built for the PL. For some players it just suits them better(see also Cajuste). Ogbene has the attributes if he is fit enough I think he is good enough to be a squad player. |  | | |

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ogbene and Mcateer go this summer, maybe perm maybe on loan. Just dont think either player is good enough tbh.
Egeli should stay at least until January then see where he is at. If he is getting minutes in the prem, great. If not see if we can sort a loan for him. But he doesn't count towards the squad so no reason really to not have him about. |  |

If he is going to play wingbacks I think keeping Johnson would be a good idea. He had some really good performances in the Prem playing in that role and Furlong could not be a wing back.

I didn't see much of the game today, but I thought that Egeli had a pretty reasonable showing. His movement to create the space for his attempt on goal just before halftime was almost Haalandesque, and he was unfortunate that it was cleared off the line. |  | | |
