Even with these recent signings...... 14:45 - Jul 25 with 3658 viewsChrisd

Anyone else feeling our squad is still way off in regards to what is required to simply compete in the EPL? Appreciate there is still time to go before the first ball is kicked in anger, but I do still feel we need some quality additions especially in the middle of the park and a couple of other areas.

Poll: Where are we going to finish?

Definitely still need around 7-8. Midfield is looking terribly thin. And up front we need another two strikers. We need a right back and a left back and another centre half. Let’s hope we see that goalkeeper through the door as well shortly. Lots still to get done yet.

There is still a lot of work to do, including offloading players. Possibly: Sammy S, Obegene, AAH, Harry C, Akpom. Probably more.

Incoming we need a GK and striker. The middle of the park looks weak. RB and LB as well.

The replacements for any one like JP who may move on.

There will still be 5-6 players coming in, imo, and a couple of signature players within that (as the dominoes at the top of the pyramid begin to fall). I also suspect we’ll see a couple of under 21s joining the group.

Our signings have been solid so far, now we need the icing on the cake.

This Maeda probably replaces JP if he goes. He plays on the left I believe as well as up top.

Yes, of course. But that was always going to be the way.

We went in to this summer with a starting 11 that was miles off being a a competitive premier league team. We managed to have a busy week this previous week though so hopefully another one now and we can add some really quality to the starting 11.

Need some Central Midfielders.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

Way off in terms of number, but not in terms of progress. I think we need 8 more as a minimum (outlined in the link below). I think our progress at this point is on track for 8+ more

Of course it's way off. No one, absolutely no one thinks this is it. But we've signed 4 really good players in a week, to add to the one proper signing already, and the couple of adequates. Another week and another 4 or 5 and we'll be much closer. Then 3 or 4 after that, with the inevitable couple late on once clubs decide exactly what they're doing.

We didn't hear much about these signings and then it blew up this week, similar next week I'd imagine.

Yeah definitely but we've just signed a number of players this week, I'm sure we've got at least 6 more to come

Need a couple of players. As I've said before I'm happy that Brentford on their return to the PL went with basically the same squad as they used in the championship, with the addition of 3 buys and easily survived. They proved you can do it, even if you only won promotion via the playoffs.

Assuming Scherpen signs, I would say that two central midfielders and a number 9 - all starters - are the three critical positions we need to fill

These three would give me confidence that we can be competitive.

I would then add a starting right back and a central or left sided 10, depending on how GON plans to use the current squad.

That should give us a good chance of staying up.

Johnson can cover both full back positions, Kipre can cover as CB. If we can upgrade these, or other positions, fine, but they are not essential imv.

I reckon we have around £75m to spend, and these monies should be largely spent on the CMs and 9 imv.

Was always going to be the way, we knew that we would need to get a lot in. Same for any team promoted to the Premier League these days.

However, the quality of signings and reach of our recruitment network has been pleasantly surprising. I assumed we'd be feeding off scraps again. Recruitment still needs to expand it's stretch when compared to other comparably sized clubs in the league and as you rightly say more is needed this summer, but it's all rather encouraging.

Well, yes - no one would think differently would they? It feels like a decent start to the new team we need, but there's a fair way to go as yet.

I always feel for the players that got us up though - they pretty much must know thwy are going to be reserves or sold. Must ne pretty dispiriting id have thught; a real test of character.

I think of how Walts must feel at the mo. He had a pretty good season, and then we bring in 2 new keepers! What on earth must he think, poor bloke.

Except one of the new GK is a youngster with the future in mind

The other, unless I've missed something hasn't even signed yet

It is but another 3 or 4 with the profile of Diop and Maeda will change that in the right positions. Then another 4 or 5 squad players.

I would imagine we could spend a lot more than another £75m if we felt we needed to

Rumour is Walton is injured, maybe for the season, so 2 keepers would make sense then.

We will probably dip into the loan market for a bit more quality too. Loan deals usually come into fruition closer to the start of the season, as clubs want to make sure they can spare the players first

Yes to a degree I do, a no 1 striker is a no option must and asap if not sooner. Another quality central midfielder, the two absolute musts for me and as quickly as possible. I'd personally also like to see 2 full/wing backs, left and right, not just as back up, but worthy challengers for those respective positions. Oh and if JP goes, certainly another left winger, I know who I'd want, he's Japanese, but I expect I'm not going to get!

We can always get Nakamura though, should be easy to woo from Reims

Decent performance at the WC

If jp goes, i wonder if we would play maeda lw and sign a new no.10 such as Enciso who GON would know from his time in France

Look at the squad. Unless we are going to have a massive clear out in the next month. We are looking at 3 or 4 more signings at the most.
