Changing habits is difficult, but we are also failing at the ‘easy stuff’ like planting trees. The UK is the second least forested country in Europe after Ireland. The Woodland Trust said we’ve missed all reforesting targets over the last decade. Completely agree with this.
Especially as modern trends and aspirations are for regular long haul holidays and a new car every couple of years. People aren't going to give that up and miss out while others still do. Individualism is king and covid reinforced that in some.
I think we're screwed in terms of climate change but I live a simple life because I want a clear conscience, I don't really believe the "we're only individuals and we can't change anything" argument because the world's richest 10% (which most of us in western europe are in) contribute 65% of all Co2 emissions.
We could make a huge different if we really wanted systemic change, but sadly the majority won't until it's too late. |

It's up to people to effectively force governments to take it seriously and then there's a chance of possibly curbing some of the excesses, or at least managing them. So yeah, collectively we can have a role. Politically at the moment it doesn't seem that there's even an acknowldgement of the dispartiy between the impacts of the rich and poor, never mind a will to do anything about it. Labour's 'growth at all cost' policy a perfect example. Not that it's an easy political circle to square, as they are judget on rates of increasing (or not) prosperity. |  |

People knew about global warming from the 80s onwards but didn’t seriously tackle it. Of all generations, it’s the youngsters who have done the least harm to both the environment and to wildlife. |
The greenhouse effect was discovered in the 1850s and in the 1890s calculations were done showing that global warming would occur with the burning of fossil fuels.

What would be really interesting for an anthropologist, I suppose, would be to be able to go back to a time when population levels were such that overfishing and overgrazing were neither an issue in themselves, nor were there any motivations driving humans to do them.
My pet theory is that we went wrong when we started farming; as soon as we built permanent dwellings we started to fill them with 'stuff' and want bigger dwellings for more stuff. When we had to carry what we owned, we were doing fine. | |

On a similar but much lesser note, I had a slightly too long bike ride in the middle of lockdown (think there was a ten mile limit for exercise at the time? - I went a bit further than that). No cars on the roads, no planes in the sky, a handful of other cyclists and walkers out and about. Silence, no fumes, no engine noise, just nature and a few people.
It was exhilarating - utter bloody bliss for me. Loved it. I mean, really loved it. Will value that experience until the day I die. | |
