I thought he was poor last season and got worse. And he really needed to be taken out of the starting line up as he was affecting our attacking play. That isn't be nasty.... he looked weighed down. And, sorry, that run in was too important and crucial and we had to make a footballing decision to leave him out.

I was encouraged yesterday with his performance. I was of the opinion we should loan him out, but maybe we can look at him and see how he develops. It's handy he doesn't add to the squad limit.
But, please... its one thing getting on his case and criticising him... but I think too many are going over-board. I'd give him a 7/10. Not a 9/10 and not MOTM.
His workrate was much better and he looked stronger and was much improved. But let's see how he gets on after 5-10 PL games. It's a tough league and a massive step up from pre-season friendlies.

It was pretty obvious last season he was a no.10 not a right winger, the fact he had to play there shows how poor the likes of McAteer were for 3/4 of the season.
When you also have to add in that bedding in period, where many players take a long time to adapt from foreign leagues, and then the fact he was only 19, it was always going to be a tough season for him. Despite that it was evident he had lots of ability and could see a pass, its just he needed to come inside constantly to get in the positions he wanted to affect the game. That became very easy to defend against. I don't know why but McKenna didn't trust him as a no.10, it was almost like he had to earn his stripes on the right before playing more centrally, very much like Omari.
But anyway, he's miles ahead of someone like Mehmeti imo, but we definitely need someone else in that 10, hopefully someone like Enciso. Walle comes in from time to time or off the bench initially, progresses and is a regular starter by the end of the season.

Well, the opening goal v Coventry was hardly a scuff and the opening goal at Watford was an on target volley. Not bobbly and if we are to dismiss every goal that isn’t a Clarke/Philogene hammer job, that’s Lineker and Greaves’ career written off.

All goals count the same and every player misses chances, even Haaland.

Yes, the right side was weak until McAteer settled towards the end of the season. The advanced midfield positions were patchy too, but that was the nature of a new team forming and that right side was certainly not weak by season’s end. When alls said and done, that team deservedly got promoted.

The point remains. The money paid for Egeli was for his potential. Other clubs saw it which is why the fee is what it was. That wasn’t his fault. Neither was being bunged in a position that really didn’t suit him. But he did contribute to our promotion.

I’ve not seen the pre season games. I hope he’s performing as well as people claim in his correct position.

Let’s hope this year’s new team gels quicker than last years.

We got away with a slow start last year, and performing strongly after Christmas led to a deserved promotion.

We need a fast start. Hopefully, the fact that a lot of new players are already here two weeks before the first game will make a big difference.

Someone I know with very close ties to the club said he put in an unbelievable amount of extra effort over the summer and came back to pre season by far the fittest, strongest and fastest player.

Great to hear stuff like that. If Sindre is my favourite Town player over the next 2 or 3 years, we’ll almost certainly be an established Premier League side.

"performed incredibly poorly"
"honestly terrible"
"not...doing anything of note on the ball"
"just hovering around the goal area"

Honestly, I just don't know what you watch sometimes.
He wasn't great but your assesment is way OTT the other way. Promoted teams don't carry players playing as poorly as you've described there.

Yep, yet another murdering of language ...

I agree. Let’s hope they do. I think it unlikely though and it’s why I’m nervous of signing too many more players.

Sunderland, who are the elephant in the room on this, are the exception. McKenna’s two teams took a while. Bobby Robson’s did. GB built a team over a long period and it took Lyall a season plus a few astute additions to get Duncan’s players fulfilling their potential.

You are right about needing a good start and the time the new players in have before the season starts. I might be wrong on this, but with the exception of Hutchinson who had already been here a season, it all felt a bit last minute panic two years ago.

He’s not a winger and never had been. Always looked uncomfortable out there. Think it was fair enough to not throw him into the middle last season in his first season in England in a brutal league, but looks class in that 10 position.

Add another top midfielder in the middle to replace Nunez and we’ve got a good looking team shaping up..

He was primarily a winger at Nordsjælland.

Having said that he looks reborn centrally this pre season, whether he would have had that same impact last year playing centrally in the Championship from the get go I’m not sure.

But where we are here and now, and going forward, he’s very much a central operator.

Yes he had played out wide for most of his life until this pre-season, it is worth people understanding that.

Also worth people clocking that young forwards are often started out in wide positions and then move centrally. Robin van Persie, who I think Sindre has a lot of similarities to, is a good example but there are hundreds.

Nice. His pressing in the last couple of games has probably been the thing that's impressed the most. Could end up being a really useful bench option.

Sorry, I disagree and stand by what I said in the earlier posts and those about him last season. It was more than one or two on here who didn’t see what he might become. Rare goal? Nice put down FB. It was actually four goals and without those it might well have been play offs for us

It wasn’t his position and he struggled in games, but he wasn’t always terrible. He was just wedged into a role for the team because at the time there was nobody else to do it.

Yup, there were too many expecting too much from a young player who just moved abroad.

Also remember that Nunez could have played Egeli in for at least two or three easy finishes in his opening games, but Nunez chose to shoot instead.

Really pleased he’s chosen to push himself into this team, and on yesterdays showing he should be a start against Sunderland.

Couldn't see that being much of a battle,

The longer time goes on the more obvious it seems to be that we had absolutely no idea what we were doing two years ago when it came to recruitment. This summer, so far, has been chalk and cheese in comparison. Too many players signed not of the standard, and we broke up the unity and togetherness which got us to the Premier League for, in the end, very little reason. We wouldn't have done much worse in the end just sticking with the promotion squad. They were not good enough but neither were the majority of their replacements, who we spent big money on.

Has Egeli had a jet engine fitted over the summer. on 08:21 - Aug 9 by FrimleyBlue

No, it was quite simply, he performed incredibly poorly on the right

Regardless of why, Mckenna made that choice and with that choice came with critique. Egeli was honestly terrible in that role with the rare goal, some not by a storming run or doing anything of note on the ball, but just hovering around the goal area, which is why most said play him centrally so he was in and around that box more to score those types of goals.

There were maybe 1/2 on here who didn't see what Egeli could become. The talent was always there, we saw it on his debut and the first couple of games, pinging the ball around, threading balls through etc. But then he was coached to be the right sided player KM needed as we had no one else at the time and it ruined his season as an individual.

Like Akpom, moving into a position this season that plays to his strengths will bring rewards.

My suspicion is that had KM played him centrally last season he would have struggled just as much. So many young players have a ‘break through’ period where they come into the team but are played ‘out wide’ where they can watch and learn, whilst not impacting the team toooo much as they learn.

KM was always open that he thought SWE would eventually play centrally. I disagree that KM spoilt his season by playing him there; I think it was exactly what he needed as he bedded into a new league, new team, new location, new language.

How can you say without his goal or goals it could have been critical to the play offs? He actually fluffed quite a few chances. As did Azon and others. And none of his goals were worldies. I remember one well taken finish which rescued a valuable point, but other goals were of the bobbly, fortunate nature ( still counts though, i know).

All season that right side was weak. And Egeli was part of that along with McAteer. If you're going to suggest his 4 goals we're critical to us getting second spot, you could also put out an argument if we'd used 30 million quid better for 2 right sided attacking players in the Championship we might have 15 or 20 goals combined ( like Philogene and Clarke) .We might even have become champions.
It doesn't matter because we got promoted, but we were really weak down that right side and it could have cost us promotion.

If I may say it, that’s a really strange take Franz! A goal is a goal no matter how bobbly or fortunate it is. What really counts is whether they gained us any points that contributed to the overall total, or to momentum as crucial parts of the season. I haven’t looked back but my memory is that one goal earned a point and another a win. If I’m right that 4 points that we really needed.

Someone check the facts for me, please!
