Social media companies to blame here. This has been coming for a while as well with live streamers who just rage bait people being annoyingly popular. Kids especially like watching stuff like this.
There needs to be a reckoning with these companies. Fines do nothing because they're making so much money.

I would hope that, on this basis, every innocent person who is injured in such incidents is able to successfully sue all the platforms that host anyone involved without doing anything to remove it and are paid huge amounts in compensation.

Ai already does scan it, but ai isnt foolproof and ai cant stop humans doing stupid things because they believe theyll get social media kudos for it anyway.These platforms make shed loads of money from completely mundane stuff posted all the time. They arent reliant on this stuff at all however many 'experts' you'll here claiming they monetise it to stay profitable. But they cant stop it completely by themselves.
we as a society used to be able to stop people doing stupid things before social media was invented, because we used to enforce boundaries on it.
Maybe we should be questioning why no one called out their behaviour before this, because this wasn't their first horse in the rodeo of life.

AI isn't foolproof but it's certainly good enough nowadays to be trained to spot dangerous driving in the majority of cases if the companies wanted to enforce it. Instead they make a token gesture of enforcing it and some people lap it up and jump to their defence, much like you have here.

Agree, the social media companies are not interested. They make reporting issues as difficult as possible. I recently reported a scammer to Facebook but I had to choose the incredibly vague 'goes against Facebook community standards' reasoning. There was nowhere to give any further details of why I was reporting it. They came back saying they had checked and it was fine but I could do the exact same process again (still nowhere to give them any relevant information on WHY I was reporting it). They came back again saying it was fine but I could report it again if I wanted...
So I did, for a third time. This time they haven't even bothered to come back to me.

Appreciate social media is utterly out of control. But there's a kind of commonsense thing going on here. Driving a car the wrong way up a dual carriageway is not the brightest thing to do.

It is quite difficult to get stuff taken down and then it is done so reluctantly and left up to maximise clicks till the last minute. And they would, or have, for 99 percent of the people who look at this stuff. 99 percent see it as crazy, dangerous and stupid, but the fact that it is still a thing on social media and hasn't been restricted automatically has meant that the less than 1 percent tiny minority have seen this as a way to get internet famous or whatever. The kids doing this are obviously responsible for their own actions, the social media companies provide a reason for, facilitate and promote their action. Quite clear distinctions imo. Social media companies still should have a responsibility to not promote stuff like this. It’s not woke to suggest the companies need to be reined in. We wouldn’t accept arms sellers on the corners of streets on the basis they only supply guns not pull the triggers. | |

TikTok for reasons I’ll keep as brief as possible, is the worst and has the most net negative cultural impact. This goes beyond the gambling mechanics they use to keep people on site and into how they exploit people for their commercial deals.
Unlike other social media platforms which are highly reliant on algorithms, most of what you see on TikTok is curated by people, who have been given direction to select and ‘scale’ creators or even certain types of content- usually this is in part to fulfil commercial deals selling products or media- they have such a stranglehold on various different niches it’s concerning- especially when you look into who owns TikTok and their history.
You’ll all undoubtedly have heard of ‘booktok’ but there’s also ‘filmtok’ and other variations, all with hundreds of artificially inflated creators in outside run discords, correlating what they post, when, why - often demanding as much as 50 TikTok’s a week to be a part of these groups, offering ‘prizes’ such as tickets to red carpet events, as payment for the hours upon hours of work that is being done for free, that as well as supporting TikTok in fulfilling their commercial deals, is undercutting a number of creators and making the creator economy extremely volatile.
They say nothing is true on social media, which is very true - but TikTok is the fakest of places, constructed purely with advertisers and commercial monopoly in mind - very grubby stuff. | | | |
