| Never had Norwood down as an Ashton fan… on 09:07 - Sep 2 by hype313 | The main thing I gleaned from that is that his career, whilst relatively successful, was hindered by his lack of early professional development, 99.9% of youngsters come through academies and learn how to apply themselves, this guy came through Eastbourne Town, which was "Win or lose, on the booze'. The fact he got steaming the night before a game for Exeter and throwing up next to the director on the coach jsut he signed his first pro contract, tells you everything. He was an amateur player in a professional environment, probably why he didn't stay anywhere long. Regarding Ashton, think we all know he has a big ego, it's not hidden away, Norwood also had a big ego, which is probably why they clashed and there was always going to be one winner. Lots of blaming others in that video, rather than looking inwards to situations he found himself in. |
Or rather self aware enough to know he behaved inappropriately a lot of the time off the field. Probably needed a KmC mentor type a lot earlier in his career.

| Never had Norwood down as an Ashton fan… on 08:53 - Sep 2 by CrockerITFC | Yeah I though it was very convenient how he completely forgot to mention that. Maybe he's got short term memory loss from all the booze! I think a large factor behind his suspension was him getting done for drink driving, especially when the majority of the private equity behind the club was from a pension fund for police officers and firefighters...not a great look. I mean a testament to Norwood's character is that even when he was breathalised several times, found to be over the limit and then taken to court he still plead not guilty despite being caught bang to rights. |
Look, firstly, as a player, I loved him, I liked the way he played, not perhaps the most gifted, but can't argue that he didn't put a shift in and give his all, always have time for that. However, when the new owners came in, it was pretty clear they wanted squeaky clean, they were propped up by a pension with clear values and I'm very confident the drink driving would have been offensive to them (the firemen are the ones who end up cutting people out of those kinds of wreckages when it goes wrong). I'm sure Ashton and Norwood clashed, in fact, probably because they're alike in many ways, but have had different environments in which to grow. They both believe/back themselves and to get to the top, you need that. Ashton has proven himself largely too, and you don't get to where he is by being bad at what you do, but you do get there by doing the dirty stuff that a lot of people can't.

The opposite, for me. I thought he was an idiot, not least because of his driving conviction, but he comes across in this long-form interview as articulate and thoughtful. He talks about being ultra-competitive and hating it when standards slip. He comes across as a fair judge of character. He doesn't slate McKenna, the manager who supposedly sold him, in fact the opposite. He has incredibly high words of praise for Sam Morsy, who has a lifestyle a million miles from Norwood's. What it tells us, above all, is that a football club has a PR department, and uses NDAs, and that the stories we are spun won't always be the whole truth. That doesn't mean that the Twitter conspiracy rumours are true by default, either. Norwood's perspective is that the Bomb Squad, and his eventual complete freezing out, was down to Ashton, not Cook. My suspicion, which I have no evidence for other than it's a theory that has an internal consistency, is that it was the owners (at the time the pension fund of Arizona Emergency Services) who wanted rid of a player with a conviction as a result of a wanton disregard for the consequences of drink driving. And so Ashton was tasked with getting rid, in spite of his value as a goalscorer.

It's not particularly astute, he just talks about the facts of how thorough Kieran was. You don't need to be astute to retell what happened.

The wrestling while injured. Pisstaking in whatsapp groups - particularly about Andy Rolls. Just childish and boorish. Someone (not Ipswich) saying he hadn't come back to a new season in good shape, and him saying "To be fair, I wasn't". FFS, you're a professional footballer. Even little things like seemingly only loving training that was "fun". If you like The Bantz and 'being a bit of a lad' he probably comes across well, but otherwise I'd suggest not.

| Never had Norwood down as an Ashton fan… on 11:47 - Sep 2 with 1066 views | MathieandMarshall | complex character is Norwood. Met him at a players dinner and had a chat about my lad and was a really personable bloke to talk to. Asked about his contract situation and he said he'd love to stay but its out of his hands. Speaks very highly of McKenna here and the likes of Paul Cook. Some of the stuff he got up to off the pitch was clearly unprofessional at the level the club was heading so probably just not the right character to 'run towards adversity' with ? | | | |

A lot of things ring true in that. What you also get is a repeated narrative coming out from people who’ve worked with Ashton that mirrors a lot of what Norwood said. Smoke and fire an all that. People seem prepared to not question or challenge him because we’re doing so well under his leadership. I suppose that just comes down to what’s important to people. As long as we do well he’s probably on safe ground, but I could see a scenario where a lot more starts to come out if we do badly. Gagging people who’ve worked under you is a bit of a red flag for me (unless it’s official secrets stuff). It might be common, but I’ve never seen why it’s needed if you’ve been well respected and treated people well. However much of a bell Norwood was/is, it’s an interesting interview. I assume lawyered to feck, or there could be some fallout!

Although an immense tool, him being moved on is nothing to do with his attitude or wanting "squakey clean" which is what he's hiding behind, he just wasn't good enough for a club of our stature and where we were attempting to get back to.

Thus proving you right all along of course. With no consideration of his age or our money. His account of being sidelined by Ashton is of course true. We know that Ashton would do this. We know how he likes to be the big boss. At the time, it was very confusing and the way Ashton manipulated it we can see now was a sign of things to come. I remember fondly that game at Wigan when Nors came on as a sub and scored that goal. I felt exactly how he felt. Nors did a great job for us. He never let us down on the pitch, but everyone is judging him for his perceived actions off the pitch. Just be careful if that's the way you want to keep score. Precisely The episode that he described where he was asked to come in a few weeks before the full pre-season started and was just "run" for a number of weeks, then told to take a week off, then reconvene with the rest of the players for new season training It was implied that this was just him being targeted for unfair treatment, especially given his particularly precious and delicate hamstrings As a professional sportsman, how on earth does he come to that conclusion? and are we really supposed to believe that no-one told him why they were doing it? He is either not particularly sharp, or he is assuming that everyone else is even less bright than him

….gonna be the type of place to accept someone like Norwood is it??! Be realistic. He’s obviously got his flaws, like most people (TWTD forum users excluded obviously), and he’s a bit of a “banter boy” (unlike most on here), but on the whole he did a decent job for us and generally seems a decent bloke at heart. It’s difficult for some users to “square the circle” though. He thinks Ashton is a dick, which is great, but he’s made mistakes, which is bad. Tough time for some.

What a silly post. You don't have to be an Ashton fanboy to call a spade a spade. Yes I am judging Norwood for his actions off the pitch. He went out drinking and then got behind the wheel of a car. Not sure its sanctimonious to judge someone for such reckless and selfish actions. [Post edited 2 Sep 13:08]

Don't love how Ashton comes across on this, but I guess he was just trying to instill standards and professionalism and Norwood was the antithesis of that. Six years on we can reflect on where each of them are, and clearly Ashton is the chairman of a Premier League club having overseen 3 promotions and a complete overhaul of the club's infrastructure. Norwood is a free agent who most recently played in League Two and scored 2 goals in 18 appearances. On reflection, I think we backed the right horse!

I very much disliked JN, but you are spot on with what you say about MA. Some extremely distasteful situations I have heard of, which of course won't be aired on here, and of course they wont all be true/and bits of the story added to... but if even 5% is right, it still not a pretty picture.

What he says about the way he was managed is a bit difficult to listen to but for a CEO whose job it is to manage value and risk at the club, there is no concern that he was the type of person we would not want to be any part of the culture we were building at the time. Interestingly we went up and up when this type of character was removed from the club.

You’ll hear a very similar opinion from plenty who have crossed paths with him. I never thought Norwood was a particularly good footballer tbh, he did score goals though. Had a bit of personality about him too, albeit made some poor choices at times not least his drink driving conviction which is something I personally detest. I did meet him at a charity event. Went out of his way to travel a long way for it in bad weather, and was brilliant with those it was raising money for. In fact of about 6 or 7 ex pros who committed, he was one of only 3 who actually turned up, and the other 2 lived around the corner. Really went up in my estimations.

I heard he left cos he was shagging Ashton's PA and got found out. A scurrilous rumour from someone who knows someone who knows someone, allegedly. What I do know is there's nothing revelatory or particularly scandalous in the Norwood interview. A bunch of lads having some bantz. I found some of it quite interesting. What wasn't surprising is how forthright Norwood still is. Slagging off Ashton and other bods (ITFC and beyond) is pretty thick when he's looking for a club. He continues to be totally unprofessional. One can be unprofessional and talented. One can be articulate and foolish. One can do good things for charity and behave like a knobber. One can be arrogant, angry, over reactive and vulnerable. What is surprising is fellow posters saying how clever and insightful Nors is. Wtf. Arf.
