They’ve had 3 but chances at the Ethiad. City will actually be fairly lucky to get away with this if it holds.

Yes, I posted that about GONs team last week and we are going to have to win those kind of games as his sides have often conceded a fair few goals.

I can see our way winning us games.
At the moment coventrys way hasnt lead to a goal

If we can take positive efforts v utd and liverpool to 'normal clubs' i see us scoring gials and winning games. At the moment coventry are in towns 24 position of competing but not enough.

You’ll maybe have to watch MOTD to understand what I meant. They really should have got something second half at the Ethiad today.

Are you able to enlighten us as to why their formation will be so much more successful (and perhaps as to why it has currently been so much less successful)?

I think he meant it as a question - as in we'll wait and see which is more successful.

Ah, yes I see what you mean. I just read it in the context that muccleton is usually very negative and missed off the punctuation mark that would have made it clear.

After 2-0 they were in cruise mode.

'cruise mode' is a nonsense cliche. Were the defenders in cruise mode or just the attackers from the 10th minute?

Florian Wirtz ran the most of anyone on the pitch last night, Munoz ran 1k less than Fatawu despite being subbed off 15 minutes before him. They were pushing to win the ball back, pushing to score goals, rotating plenty to pull us out of position.

Equally they had 5% more possession than us, which does not suggest a team just popping it around unopposed.

I think they were pretty comfortable after going 2-0 and certainly didn’t have to push like they would have done in a closer game.

It was a question. Cov went to the same formation as Hull did against Man Utd, five t the back, after conceding the first.

So instead of being on the end of as moral sapping hammering, they could have quite easily nicked a point and walk away with some confidence going into the next game.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

They certainly weren’t pushing for a third and they didn’t really go close to adding to the score line.

The second half was a bit of a stalemate.

From a few on here, you’d think that if they wanted to score more then they would’ve done so at will - that is total nonsense from them.

Fair enough. The statement preceding it suggested it wasn't a change leading to damage limitation but rather a preferred formation.

I would certainly like us to set up to be more solid against the top sides. I think it's madness to be open against them as we saw the outcome in both the last two.

That said, if we hadn't fallen apart after Man Utd scored their debatable goal we were very much in that game.

I don't think we are going to stick rigidly to a set formation anyway (even more so than the case under McKenna where the formation was always somewhat fluid).

Depends on there mentality

Would they feel terrible conceding goals against a top side but continued to gel as a team whilst getting used to how the manager wants to play in the majorty of the games this season

Or feel worse after again failing to score a goal for a third game despite having chances.

They scored a lot of goals last season but I think they created a very large number of chances. They aren't going to dominate the number of chances in many Premier League matches so will need to be much more clinical if they are going to score many in it. Their defence is also going to come under a lot more pressure too.

As Muccleton says, time will tell, but I think their season looks likely to go similar to how ours did 2 years ago. Look like they can compete in games whilst not picking up enough points. Find January can't resolve the issues and see the confidence and belief disappear the longer the season goes on.

Yeah thats how i see it and why im ok at the moment with oneil setting us up the way he wants us to go about business.

I do think once weve settled down we will start to see a back 5 transition for some games. But when we have 14 new players its key we get upto speed with the plan A as soon as possible.

The big positives for me is i think we can actually be competitive against normal prem sides. Compared to coventry who i think will do as you say.

What your describing there is just a difference in tactics based on the game state.

Of course if they were drawing the game they would have taken more risks to try and score a goal ...

That is not first gear, cruise mode etc etc that is a normal football match.

Yes, I think they'll probably finish bottom but this is the only way to play at the Etihad.

Until the 75th minute they had 16% possession but at least they are still in it. In hindsight (maybe not just hindsight) when we went 1-0 up at United we should have left ourselves far less open.

It will be us, Hull or Cov finishing bottom. I can see no other outcome looking at the first three matches from all of those teams.

A normal football game if you’re a good level above. That’s why you can’t start games like we did and concede 2 goals in 150 seconds

Exactly, totally in agreement.

I'm just making the point that these statements similar to 'first gear', 'easing off' or 'could of scored more if they wanted' are just a bit pointlessly negative and have no real founding substance.

The problem is they still lost. And that's a real issue for teams establishing themselves in the Premiership. You can play well, even great, and still get nothing from a game due to one mistake or one bit of brilliance from the other team. The expected goals or other stats mean nothing unless you take whatever chances you get. 3 chances and no goals. That's the stat that matters.

i'd rather beat the sunderlands and hulls than lose by less goals against the man citys and liverpools!

Agree, but our tactics have been naive against the big boys we have been too front foot and left far too much space for them to play through. Much more likely to take something from these games by being compact and trying to nick something on the break.

we'll see; cov's tactics have brought them zero points too.

goals conceded have largely been errors (and odd var calls!) rather than our patterns of play.

need to stop conceding goals in pairs though!

Hmm. We lost by 2 yesterday. Cov by 1.

Not really a lot in it. Cov about in the game as much as we were yesterday.

On chances created Cov missed some golden opportunities. I don't remember us making a gilt-edged chance. Liverpool played in second gear and we couldn't lay a glove on them, Cov could (maybe should) have scored at least two.

Coventry also rode their luck, another day they would have conceded more.

They have Chelsea next week, have had a hard start like they we did two years ago,
Coventry have more than enough up front to start picking up points very soon,
Hull are incredible atm,
Il say it again a lot of money spent on midfield and attack very little on a very leaky defence,
It's a championship defence in disguise,
Where possibly our downfall again may come,

Hull are not incredible and if one more person says this I might post a separate rant. They have a fantastic keeper but they also have a luck on their side. In all three games they should have conceded more than the opposition. Their wondrous defence and much lauded low block have been breached in a manner which should have resulted in goals but didn't due to a mix of poor finishing and great keeping. Is it sustainable? Possibly, considering Sunderland season last season, but it's a risk.

Does this mean I think we're on the right track? No. We definitely need to be more solid and I'm an advocate for switching to a back three. But we'll need some fortune if becoming all defensive means games plan out in the same way as Hull's.
