| Tonda Eckert gets suspended ban of 6 weeks and £28,000 fine on 16:46 - Oct 7 with 933 views | Zx1988 | That's a shockingly lenient decision. "The FA had proposed a three-month ban, but the commission gave credit to Eckert for what they called "considerable mitigation in this matter, most particularly around the genuine contrition"." He was never sorry - he was just sorry that he got caught. As someone in the comments beneath the BBC article has pointed out - Heggebo got a greater punishment for failing to own up to a handball. | Tonda Eckert gets suspended ban of 6 weeks and £28,000 fine on 17:25 - Oct 7 with 719 views | HighgateBlue | Southampton were expelled from the playoffs and docked 4 points. A junior member of staff being told to do the club's dirty work was obviously an aggravating factor. The scale of that punishment indicates that this was considered to be a serious breach. But when it comes to the manager, this panel (presumably a different panel) seems to take a very different course. The genuine contrition seems to have been given serious weight. Many non-Saints fans will be wholly sceptical of that contrition, but even if it is genuine, that mitigates the punishment and hence knocks a bit off, rather than bringing it down a few levels in terms of its starting severity. I can't see how you can square expelling Saints with giving this guy a 6 week suspended sentence. Losing your temper with a ref gets you a touchline ban, and showing genuine contrition doesn't get that touchline ban suspended. He's been given a less severe punishment than a touchline ban! I mean, yeah, £28,000 fine, but that's not going to hurt. | | | |

It's pathetic. He served up two conflicting stories on deciding to spy on Town plus he initially denied the charge and then claimed ignorance. Way way too lenient.

How they can reduce the sentence given they denied it all that, is madness. He should've been banned from all football for a long period of time.

The biggest punishment was the 100M+ potentially lost from promotion which was a huge penalty. Individually that would still have cost TE a lot. For the record I do not like him.

You can’t use a hypothetical like that £100m though even if Sky love to slap it around every year. They cheated systematically and it’s only due to them getting away with it for so long you can’t prove it was every game etc. For me them and Man City should both be dismantled and hobbled for a generation or more following this sort of thing. Once you condone organised and intentional cheating like this you lose all sense of justice in the game.

That wasn't even really a punishment because they could've just lost the final anyway. Getting chucked out of the playoffs was the least that should've happened. I'm happy they got a points deduction as a club, for allowing it to happen but there should be a personal punishment for Eckhart and he has literally got away with it here. How can a coach in the women's game get banned for multiple years for spying on opponents training, but he gets a fine for probably a weeks wages, and a suspended sentence that has no chance of getting activated. It is a ludicrous decision.

Why would they cheat against Oxford and then not apparently do it until the Ipswich game? Most right thinking people will know they did it much more often, it was just those 2 they felt they couldn’t get away with, until the Borough game. Southampton have been treated incredibly leniently, quite rightly they should have been no where near the Playoff final. Basically their “punishment” is being docked 4 points. Big deal! Eckert should be banned for a season, he knew what he was doing and nearly got away with it. Also when one of the mitigations was that he didn’t initiate the spying on ITFC, then who did? Presumably someone above the manager?

I don't understand this logic though, they cheated, everyone admits they cheated, therefore the potential reward for cheating cannot be a punishment. It's an inevitability. The punishment is beyond that. They were cheating to gain the £100 million. Robbing a bank and being caught, you don't say the punishment is losing the money. That's the jail time.

yeah but this is kind of the problem Im assuming the panel struggled with. "they" cheated, who ultimately is "they". Southampton the club ? who appear to have argued successfully they were already punished. the manager ? well he wasnt working alone on it was he, the intern was the one actually doing the spying but he has faced no charges for it, and appears to have been given a permanent role at the club now... but who else in the club knew, and why havent they been charged as well as the manager Its like why was the manager the one facing the charge and potential ban alone, was there evidence he alone instigated it ? he alone forced the intern to do it ? and he alone reviewed the info back ? and I note theyre reasoning included that punishing Eckert would simply further punish the club, again highlighting they couldnt distinguish between the club and the individual in front of them cleanly enough to decide on a ban. but it feels like theres a remarkable lack of curiosity in getting to the bottom of the whole thing and everybody would prefer we just move on and forget it happened.

What kind of message does this send out - cheat and you won't face any consequences at all? And 'genuine contrition' doesn't even pass the laugh test. It's amazing how many people show 'genuine contrition' once they've been caught.

They’d still have had a final to play and Hull were no mugs. Plus that was for the team and not a penalty against Eckert. I don’t see how this is any different to drugs offences which in some sports see lengthy or even lifetime bans. He’s a cheat and should be banned as a minimum imo. I suppose the only good thing to come out of it is that it’s now publicly known what he is. There’s a good chance he’s been doing this for years as previous teams he’s been at as a coach have had accusations of spying levelled against them.
