I assume there will be a caveat to prevent the children all immediately selling their share to buy a bullet-proof vest to wear to school.

My big doubt is the mid terms. If the Trump accounts don't happen I could see Musk saying well I was going to but it didn't happen. I would love to see it come off. This is exactly the kind of thing i've been saying he should do when others have said his assets are not in cash.

It's nothing more than a bribe to try and win favour with the populace whilst being a horrible right wing tw*t. It's not even a big bribe, SpaceX shares are about 200 USD each.

The real question is why are you lapping it up?

This is an interesting one really.

It would cost him nothing would it? It effectively dilutes the value of the current shares but that will only cost shareholders.

If he were to literally give $10 billion of his own money that still wouldn't really affect him would it (aside from having to liquidate the assets to do so).

The Bible tells the story of the widow's mite which seems very apt here.

Totally agree with you. This not really costing Musk like giving actually money would ( like he needs to be frugal ). I think it is a cynical method of hooking young people in America into his other worlds dominance scheme. Much like Trump, Musk's needs come first before anything else. His donations have always had strings attached and we're never just for altruistic reasons. He is quite cynical and not a particularly good human being.

You seem to be saying he is going to create new shares to give away? This is not the case as far as I can see. He would be giving away shares he owns.

The total amount of shares remains the same.

How is this a fantastic idea? It's essentially bribery

Someone with loads of government contracts and a vested interest in ensuring the government continues to contract his companies ensures that young people also have the same interests as him. I have no idea how this can be viewed as a good idea.

Also it feels a bit like when U2 gave their music away to everyone through iTunes even if you hated U2!

I'm sure that will happen around the same time the checks for the DOGE savings get sent out, as the president promised.

Assuming that is about Musk, I don't support him. I've said repeatedly that I think he's a cock. He is another Trump, a thin skinned man baby.

However, i've been scathingly critical of the likes of Musk for not doing more good with their wealth only to be told that his assets are not liquid. I have mocked those people and said he could easily give away shares so now he is claiming he will, I support the idea and will wait to see if he actually does it. There is a big difference between supporting someone's individual actions and supporting them in general. He is clearly a nasty piece of work with a massive ego and tissue paper skin.

None of the above aimed at you, just a convenient place to make the point.

Can't see who has said that so must be someone on my div list.

I suspect it's because i'm an easily fooled racist rather than anything more nuanced.

I would not be at all surprised if Musk sits down for his next interview and says it's dependent on the Republicans winning the mid terms. If he does go through with it though, I can't criticise him for doing the exact thing I have been saying he should do. No doubt there is at least some sort of cynical motivation. There is for most businesses. A good example if the number of US companies who quickly abandoned their engagement with Pride month once Trump was back in office.

Re your last point. A sizeable % of the human race are really sh1t people, unfortunately.

My faith in human nature gets lower with each passing year.

Not sure someone on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 (unchanged for 17 years despite massive inflation) who gets 11 days holiday per year and has to fund their own health insurance would agree.

How does that help someone working at Walmart?

Clever from Musk. He future proofs Space X from any future regulation by making 70 million young Americans financial stakeholders with a vested interest in SpaceX's success. And that’ll be on top of the huge tax breaks he can get from income offsets and by gifting shares he’ll probably increase his stock value but get out of capital gains tax too.

A nice shot in the arm for Trump too ahead of the mid-terms where all polls show him tanking. So in short, financial benefits for Musk, reputational/branding benefits for Trump.

If they actually cared about US children they could have done something similar to the child trust funds we did here which weren’t tied to a corporation and didn’t have very restrictive clauses.

I am not for one moment going to argue that people in low-income jobs are not in great shape here. I guess it's worth noting, 30 states have above federal minimum wage legislation, 20 do not.

Many of those earning Fed Min wage are likely in the service industry and make quite a lot more on tips, some students etc can earn incredible money doing that.

A quick look suggests it's 1% of hourly paid workers that are on fed minimum wage.

Yea it's like everywhere else really isn't it with different levels. At least in the UK there is universal healthcare though.

I would imagine the US is amazing if you're in the top 20-30% of earners and have a bit of financial sense. Seen a lot of posts on the likes of Reddit of people really struggling. There seems to be a growing backlash amongst service workers that you shouldn't be eating out if you don't tip some obscene amount. Is that something you are seeing? I don't mean those obviously fake AI generation ones on social media with fake notes on receipts etc.
