M6 Toll on 09:15 - Feb 9 with 6269 views | Marshalls_Mullet | Absolutely. Also, be prepared to be delayed for at least 30 mins to an hour between Stoke and Manchester, mainly around Sanbach / Knutsford!! MM

Cheers. When driving from Suffolk I would eschew the M6 in favour of the A1, and shooting across the country at whichever point I could be bothered. But from South London the M1/M6 seems to make more sense.

M6 Toll on 09:20 - Feb 9 with 6242 views | ITFC_Forever | M1, A50, A500, M6 is the correct answer. Avoid the West Midland altogether.

M6 Toll on 09:20 - Feb 9 with 6231 views | Cotty | Depends on traffic. Well worth checking if the M6 is clear around Birmingham before choosing. If you are travelling anywhere near a peak time, yes it's worth it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Do it all the time for away games in the North West. Absolute doddle. A50 is empty (and 100% dual carriageway, barring a couple of roundabouts), and you come on to the M6 at Junction 16. It can be slow from there to Manchester as others have said, but if you go up the M6, you'll get that whether you start at the beginning or J16. [Post edited 9 Feb 2018 9:26]

Which part of the Lakes? If you are going to the North Lakes, I would be tempted with M1, A1, A66. Never underestimate how poor the M6 is between Stoke and Manchester area.

Does it not force you to drive through Stoke on Trent?
| |
M6 Toll on 09:31 - Feb 9 with 6176 views | SaleAway | yep - do it. any time you can save there will repay itself by getting up the M6 as quickly as possible. On a friday, it starts to get busy early afternoon - so the earlier you can get past manchester/preston the better. Genuinely - leave as early as you can. I often go south from manchester on a friday afternoon, and coming northbound can be hateful.

Which can also be a nightmare. I wouldn't bother with that route unless the M6 is clusterf***ed.

Yeah, I guess. I just always feel a bit guilty of being part of the problem and enabling two tier infrastructure. I should probably just drive less if I were that bothered

Remember you are driving on a Friday, which is likely to be busier than travelling up for a matchday. I'd avoid going too close to Stoke. Any issues on the motorway, and Stoke area will be grid locked.

I use that route regularly (I live about a mile from the a50) and it is usually ok. Getting through stoke doesnt seem as bad as it used to be

I'm not really sure the M6 toll is a social issue. If you can afford to run a car, you can afford the £5 toll charge. If you are using the toll road, you are likely to be on a long journey, and your fuel will be costing much more than the toll charge. It was built to ease congestion on a strategic route, not as a folly for the rich.

Yeah, that's my usual route to be honest. And I'm staying in Ambleside, so it doesn't really matter too much either way. I was originally going to up the A1 then across the Dales via Leyburn, but the weather looks awful.
