To be fair (and I may have missed it) have there been many on here doing that?

Since the Brexit vote I mean. Some on here have refused to accept the EU have any flaws at all. And no i'm not enjoying this. I'd much rather there were vaccines for all. I know the EU are acting mainly out of desperation like the rest of the planet.

You’re better than that post J2. There are precious few, if any, EU evangelists on here and I’m not sure anyone has defended them over this fiasco.

I don't recognise your characterisation of the responses on here to be honest. But I cba to get into that one! Like I saw you say earlier, I wish our European neighbours well, and hope this can be resolved to everyone's benefit.

Indeed, the EU are behaving disgracefully here. I understand they are probably panicked but this isn't the right resolution.

Not publicly no, you are all just keeping your heads down. I remember when there was an apparent ventilator crisis and some bloke in Tamworth had said he could provide 1000's of the things but the government wouldn't talk to him. The links to the story were flashing on here like an injured cock. When (the next day) it was shown that the bloke was a complete cretin it all went quiet. This is a constant thing on here. Not sure if it's amusing or depressing really. I'll mull it over.

If I were to play devil's advocate I could say there are some Brexit voters with buyers remorse on here who have been quick to play the old Brexit card!

You can name me One thing i've always done is to be balanced. I've given the EU plenty of credit when it has been due. It's not a two way street though. Some on here would bend over backwards to defend the EU and deflect blame on to our own government whenever possible. And yes, our government are a bunch of cretins. I don't argue that point.

It’s an example of the EU acting appallingly and, after 4 years of relentlessly watching Project Fear become Project Reality and all of the leading Brexiteers exposed as lying charlatans, many Brexit supporters are understandably desperate to cling to anything to save face. I have no problem whatsoever in saying the UK government seems to have played an absolute blinder with vaccines and the EU has been caught out and are trying to bully their way out of it. However, the only people acting with equally little class are the gloating morons over here. Whether it’s Hancock and Boris bragging incessantly about how we’ve done more jabs than the rest of Europe combined or people on here enjoying the fact that liberals are upset, even if the collateral damage is European lives. The triumphalism is particularly weird when you consider that the vaccine is just one (very important) part of the battle to save lives from the pandemic. Since we’re allowing international comparisons again now, it seems appropriate to point out that we’ve had nearly 50,000 (FIFTY THOUSAND!!) more deaths than the Germans who we’re so enjoying lauding it over. Some bloke in Tamworth? The only story I can ever connect with Tamworth is those two pigs that once escaped and were all over the news for days. The 'Tamworth Two'. Looking back, it must have been particularly quiet on the news front.

It leaves Eire and U.K. in a really difficult position not of their making and it’s going to be interesting to see what Biden’s take on it is, given how much of an interest he has in Ireland’s affairs. When the EU stop any Pfizer vaccine coming to the U.K., will it not put Pfizer actually in breach of contract? Pfizer is an American company. How will that sit with them?

There are several threads pointing out the EU’s having a ‘mare. So it’s bollox. Irrespective of who’s “fault” it is, this wouldn’t have happened without Brexit. And that’s a fact. That doesn’t mean the EU aren’t being aggressively protectionist over this of course, but nuance is a lost art.

I agree about the bragging thing but I was listening to James O Brien the other day and he was suggesting that any vaccine triumphalism was akin to celebrating deaths on our EU neighbours - but for the past year he has been holding up our death count and criticising it. This is the problem with extremists -as Corporal Jones would say, "They don't like it up em Captain Mainwering"

Hardly. I've admitted it was stupid to vote out and owned it. I also said in a separate thread that we're lucky this issue was settled by speed and not muscle. If the vaccines had been produced and then sold to countries with the deepest pockets it would obviously have been the other way around.

They seem to be suggesting we are capable of some skullduggery whilst showing a bit of that themselves. As you say, who owns those vaccines? If payment is yet to be made then you'd assume the manufacturers. There are 3 factories making the AstraZeneca here already and only one in the Netherlands, so are quantities of that much a concern? So this is all down to the Pfizer and/or others?

There is certainly some truth in that, I think questioning our death toll is perfectly reasonable but the tone in which that’s done has often left much to be desired. I also think it’s fair to say that it’s uncomfortable for remainers to see the EU acting so badly.

I'm not sure how being appalled by our catastropic response to this and disgusted by smug triumphalism of the likes of Farage over this monumental cock-up are mutually exclusive things. We have no right in this country to be gloating about this given a) how utterly immature(at best) it is to be gloating about it given how badly we've performed at everything else. It's like making a cake by mixing in fresh turds and then claiming it's a success because you've iced it nicely. The main thing this sorry episode is proof of, is that both parties would almost certainly have been better served by us staying in. [Post edited 29 Jan 2021 20:32]

I will say if we hadn't left already then this mess would have made it a certainty. I imagine we would have joined the French, Germans, Dutch and Italians in trying to purchase vaccines early - or even going it alone within the EU. If we were browbeaten by the Commission to join the overall approach, as the French et al were, and then this occured...

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/eu-astrazeneca-publish-heavily-redacted-deal- AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot told Germany's Die Welt newspaper this week that the U.K. government helped create the vaccine developed with Oxford University and signed its contract three months before the EU did. Soriot said that under the British contract, vaccines produced at U.K. sites must go to the U.K. first. [Post edited 29 Jan 2021 20:27]
