Harper, Evans, Burns, Dobra, Pigott, Norwood, Bonne, Chaplin, Fraser.

9 players for 6 positions (5 if we play wingbacks).

Which players out of those start? My guess would be Dobra, Norwood and Bonne on the bench but that's a lot of attacking talent we're potentially missing out on.

Maybe Burns can drop to right back sometimes if KVY is injured. Maybe Fraser can fill in for Harper / Evans if either of those are injured.

I think we've got enough attacking players now. I'm really surprised that fans still want another winger on top of that. We'll be doing well to keep all those players happy and motivated as it is IMO.

Yes the three you mentioned will miss out.

Dobra defintely.
Norwood probably.
Bonne possibly.

LB: Penney
CB: Edmundson
CB: Nsiala
CM: Harper
CM: Evans
AMR/FWR: Burns
AMC/FWC: Fraser
AML/FWL: Chaplin

CB, LB and CM are areas where we probably need more cover.

In terms of attacking play and your last point. Burns, Dobra, Pigott, Norwood, Bonne, Chaplin and Fraser would be considered our attacking players, not Harper and Evans

I’ve noticed a few people implying or flat out saying Bonne won’t be in the team and it amazes me.

Agreed, we have 7 players competing for 4 spots at the front of the team. Good options and blend throughout. Need that other CM though, and Nolan back fit.

We absolutely need a winger. Only Dobra, Burns and Chaplin/Fraser (the latter two only if we are happy to play quite narrow) from your list are comfortable out there.

Dobra should really kick on this season but can't hang hat on him yet; Burns is a good signing but not traditionally a goals/assists machine so I suspect we'll find out in time what his best function is. Lose just one or two through injury and we're well short in a season where we can't and won't p*ss around. One more quality option needed for those wide areas.

If Evans isn’t fit and nobody else arrives I’d expect Burns to play Center mid with Harper. Think he’s played there before and he is a versatile player anyway. Good shout on another winger needed.

I see Burns winding up as a sort of versatile option rather than a nailed-on winger who produces week in week out. Kinda more than a full-back, less than an out and out wide forward, like Clapham was. But I have been hopelessly wrong often.

Midfield is absolutely the first one we need to do as we are waaaay short in there.

Why does it "amaze" you?

I can't see him getting the nod over Pigott and he won't push one of the three out behind him surely (Burns, Fraser, Chaplin)?

The only way he'd start is if we went 4-4-2.

Burns has looked really good at RW in pre season...would be surprised and disappointed if he isn't first choice there once the season starts...

I am probably being unfair, if his numbers hold up then I'm sure he will keep that place — but we still need more options out wide.

Don't think he's played at CM before? All along the right flank, yes. But CM no. If Evans and Nolan aren't fit moving Scott Fraser back is the obvious choice, I would've thought. Played half his games for MK Dons there last season and there's plentiful cover for him in the Number 10 role.

I thought that Bonne could play anywhere across the front 3 so his most likely starting position would be on the left. So the 9 and 10 positions would be between Pigott, Fraser and Norwood.

I think Burns would play right side so it would be between Chaplin, Bonne and Dobra to play on the left. If Chaplin and Bonne are competing for the same position I don't think either will be impressed if they are not starting regularly.

So we'll have to agree to disagree. At this point in time really don't see the point of bringing another winger in. It would mean potentially benching Bonne and Chaplin. Why would we want to do that?

We'd do it because we need a strong squad — with players who can come on, contribute and alter the course of a game. Our signings so far have been excellent but we're still a little bit thin on numbers.

Very good reply, thanks. I wasn't sure if Fraser could play there or not. If Fraser can cover for Harper or Evans if they're injured then there must also be an argument that we don't necessarily need another CM either.

Personally I think if we just got Coulson in as LB I'd be happy with what we've got otherwise. Possibly an experienced hairy arsed centre half. IMO Wolfy is already 3rd choice.

Personally think priority of signings should be....

LB, then a CB, then cover at CM if the right man is available. I think we are still lacking a little in defence more than any other area.

Good issue to have though right? Rather than when we were relying on Norwood otherwise we'd turn to Hawkins, Sears etc.

Bonne is on loan from a higher league. I don't understand why we would be doing that with an intention for him to be back-up. I would imagine there is every chance he would play as the main striker but then we have signed Chaplin who may well be ahead of him for that position. I think Bonne will feature somewhere in the front players for most of the season.

Longer term I suspect Fraser doesn't offer enough defensively to be one of Cook's CMs on a regular basis.

Yes it is. I rate Norwood but it's definitely a good thing that he knows he's got a major fight on his hands to get in the team. I think he will be really fired up this time around.

So I'm feeling really positive for the season.

My slight concerns are that:

a) Players like Chaplin, Bonne, Fraser might throw their toys out of the pram if they're on the subs bench and cause unrest in the dressing room.

b) For me, Pigott and Norwood are the only ones likely to score a shedload. If Norwood doesn't play many minutes then the goals we might lose could hinder our chances of promotion.

c) Dobra and Wolf will need quite a lot of playing time to really push on this season, but will they get it given the players ahead of them? Especially if we sign another centre half.

Currently I count 18 as nailed-on squad members. This does not include the likes of the Bomb Squad nor such as Ndaba, El Miz or Morris. If the limit is 22, unless we bring some we already have in from the cold, then 3-4 further signings seem inevitable and would, one supposes, be spread across the team.

He seems to have been experimenting with Pigott playing more as a 10 and dropping in (like a league one Harry Kane) with Bonne playing as the number 9. Only thing with this is that it pushes Fraser out wide.

I don't think this is too bad if you have a quality LB who can get up and down a lot as Fraser can then tuck in, but we will see soon enough I guess.

I would hope we have got in players who accept they have to earn a place in the team. I think Cook has already shown he won't bow to player power and will ship out players if he has to.

Goals are going to come from more areas of the pitch than the strikers. Chaplin is supposed to be a good finisher from comments made on signing - his record in the Championship does not appear to bear that up but how many minutes did he play and how many chances was he given during those minutes? I think we will be alright for goals.

Burns looks like the strongest winger we’ve had in a long time. Direct, head up all the time, drives past full backs, can cover KVY when he bombs on, and apparently has a good free kick in his arsenal. I honestly think he could be our best signing of the season, adds so much pace and ability on the wing, and is a ready-made replacement if KVY does break down again. Haven’t had a true replacement wing back since KVY’s arrival, and that has always been our issue.

agree with your points about the players' attitude and goals from across the team...
ref Chaplin I'm pretty sure that a number of Barnsley fans as well as the player himself have said that last season's system didn't suit Chaplin. Cook knows him well and I'm sure he will get the best out of him.

Maybe the answer is just to get a few more average squad players in rather than those likely to start every game (like Penney will be when we sign a better left back).
