The club owners are savvy people. They know that a large section of our fanbase will lap up any amount of 'inspirational' horsesh1t.

Perhaps say that to the Arizona firefighter after a 14 hour shift battling wildfires?

Not a phrase that stands up to scrutiny. Let's leg it towards that catastrophe!

Fairly standard corny club motto, isn't it?

"To Dare is To Do" etc.

I don't mind them having a saying but it is very much CEO corporate bullshlt. You can just see it on a powerpoint slide with synergies, Customer journey, Holistic, Touchpoint, Ecosystem, but to be fair the yanks love all that so they'll be lapping it up.

That kind of makes sense in that context. In the whole 'running a football club' business, it just looks like a bit if guffy inspirational b0llocks stolen from a facebook mum page.

Agreed that in a footballing context its tenuous at best, but maybe its best we put it aside and respect how club is being funded for the foreseeable future

Thank you for clarifying that ‘scrutiny’ means awkward use of a thesaurus.

I can’t understand why people are having trouble with this. Elite sport is all about running through the pain barrier (mentally and physically) repeatedly, something the first team hasn’t been doing for some time. I like the motto, as it is a reminder to the team that this is what it takes to win. Each to their own I guess.

Guffy inspirational b0llocks has a long history in football. The Americans didn't invent "Nil Satis Nisi Optimum" did they?

At least that vaguely makes sense.

All 'run towards adversity' makes me think is 'is that an instruction for the rest of the team to make sure that Nsiala isn't left to his own devices too much'?

It is marginally better than the first draft, which was "Trying to stop being a bunch of bottlejobs".

While I'm normally against a lot of the hot air and motivational talk, it definitely comes from a valid place in terms of our direct link to service personnel and it's something that could have legs for community outreach here too. It's quite a powerful idea, in the centre of a time where we have an awful lot to be thankful for to a lot of people. If it can be spun to motivate our players to try harder, then so be it.

Nick Ames captures the spirit of it well I think:

Ashton scrolls through his phone and locates a picture of a placard bearing the words “Run towards adversity”, surrounded by signatures. He asked Ipswich’s players, a largely new team after a summer of sweeping change, to “sign it in blood” after a meeting last week. The phrase relates to the challenges faced by the firefighters and rescue workers whose contributions will directly fund the club’s ambition.

“They have to run into burning fires, towards bullets, towards danger,” he says. “The only thing the pension fund have asked me is that, if you join this club, every time you go to work you run towards adversity and tackle the challenge head on. The players represent the fans and the community, but they represent those people as well.

“After it was presented to them, one of the squad went up to my director of performance, Andy Rolls, and said: ‘I owe you an apology, my running stats were down yesterday and I didn’t put in the effort I should have. It won’t happen again.’”

As long as it doesn't come back and bite us like the holding hands/line dancing fiasco Lambert tried.

It'll sell some hastily printed T-shirts from the club shop.

Christ, that was awful wasn't it.

Was it Fleetwood that made the video mocking us later in the season? Quite funny if it wasn't so tragic.

Not my place to comment, but having read the excellent article I will. So neah.

I think that phrase isn't the normal management w'nk guff corporate people are often fond of. It's a direct reminder of where the money's coming from and should remind your footballers that they now have certain responsibilities. Quite sweet and old school even. Bit wierd that you're now a works team for some yanky emergency workers, but that's the modern world, so run with it.

personally i wouldn't want to shout too much about us having a bit of the pension pot of arizona fire fighters until we know they'll be getting it all back. running towards adversity certainly isn't a great motto for a pension fund manager. there is a lot to be positive about with the club at the moment, but essentially gambling with someone's pension isn't something i'm terribly comfortable with.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

A works team eh?

Well we can once again be spoken about in the same breath as the likes of PSV (Philips), Atletico Madrid (Spanish Air Force), Leverkusen (Bayer AG), Wolfsburg (VW), etc.

Unfortunately we might also be lumped with Arsenal (Woolwich armaments factory) and West Ham (Thames Ironworks).
