Personally I’d love to see him here permanently. No coincidence the defence has been so good since he’s been part of it. He pretty much marshals that whole left side himself. Granted he certainly still has a lot to learn but feel he could be a great player for Town if a buy option becomes available. Strong character.

He’s improved the more he’s played, but I still think we could do with a more attacking left wing back similar to Burns on the right. He’s also on loan from a Prem club, so wages are likely an issue, as well as ambition.

He may not get forward as well as Burns however he gets back and defends much more effectively and I believe it is that imbalance that weirdly gives the team balance. We may not keep him as he will be on Prem contract but he will have a good career. I noticed right from the get go at Ipswich he was organising and encouraging others pretty impressive for such a young man.

He's earned his place, no doubt. I still want my left wing back to be better and more willing going forward though. He relies too much on Celina making something from nothing down that side.

I think he'd be a decent signing, but can't say I'd love it if he signs here.

Possibly but does the way he plays add more balance to the team? If we had two full backs that were as gung-ho as Burns we'd definitely be more vulnerable defensively. It's clearly a tactic that his first thought is to look inside to find Celina.

Would be nice if he had that ability to beat the full-back once in a while. No-one is asking him to be a left-sided Wes Burns - just every so often take the full-back on.
If it’s possible to get a better option at LWB then we need to explore that. Not sure we should dent the budget too much to sign him if that’s the case.

I think he has the defensive attributes, certainly does look a good 1 on 1 defender and appears to be improving each game. Have to remember he's only a few weeks older than Bailey Clements who we all see as a kid and gets all manner of allowances as a result, and rightly so.

Not sure about him in an attacking capacity yet, but that might come, he's definitely athletic enough to get up and down it just looks like a bit of an unnatural concept to him still at times. He's one that can definitely kick on under KM I would say.

Did you not see him play on Saturday?!

The one weak link in the side.

Must be much better options out there.

I think KVY is the better all-rounder.

Does anyone here think Thompson is better than KVY?

He's undoubtedly a better defender.

Hmm, whilst he's been solid at the back, I'm not sure he has the forward thrust that McKenna is looking for, add in the fact that he will command a decent fee and be on decent wages, you would think the club would explore other options.

That being said, I wouldn't be disappointed if he did sign permanently.

Would be one of those solid if unspectacular signings. Added bonus of being able to cover the LCB role.

Not sure if I'd want Thompson to re-sign but I think the criticism of him being unable to push forward is a bit unfair because it's not his role in the system. Quite often when we're out of possession Burns joins the front 3 with Donacien pushing out to RB and Thompson dropping in to make it a back 4.

Agreed.

Completely different situation on the right where Donacien is critical to shoring up the right side so Burns can effectively hang further forward. Thompson has to defend much, much more than Burns.

In reality, I think we’re very close to a back 4 of Thompson, Edmundson, Woolfenden, Donacien. Which long term might be the best approach anyway.

I’m not fussed if he joins, tbh. He’s ok, solid, but I’m not seeing him as a crucial signing moving forward. I agree with another poster…he doesn’t have to be a left sided Wes, but it would be nice if he was able to beat a man every now and then.

I wouldn’t mind him as a left sided central defender in a 3. Not sure he’s strong enough going forward for the wing back role. The likelihood of him being given that role with the players we have here now is very unlikely.

The question will be if McKenna thinks he can shape his game going forward and will be an investment worth going with.

Don’t think we’d get him permanently. But a season long loan. I’d like that.

Adds good balance for me on that left side - less marauding and effective than Burns but does add a bit more defensive structure.

Has been part of the defensive group that has been incredible. I wouldn’t want to disrupt that at all.

I like him... I think the comparisons with Burns are a bit off... Burns is a converted winger, and he has the benefit of JD alongside him... It's not as if we are seeing Fridge/Burgess hit the byline in the way JD gets up in support?.. If we are to see something on our left flank, comparable to out right... Then , imo, we need to be discussing the LCB position as well as LWB... The Burns/JD combo on the right. Is a pretty tough act to replicate...... Having said all that. There is still room for improvement in Thomson's attacking game. But we have certainly benefitted from his defensive qualities... Just my op'

TBH I think he is at least twice the player KVY is. I think he gets up and down very well and has quite a high ceiling for improvement. That said, I don't think we have a chance of signing permanently due to him being quite highly rated at Brentford.

Wow. Really?

Can’t see it myself.

He’s confident and ‘safe’ but twice the player of KVY?

Per an earlier post, the team is in need of a Burns type player on the left and I think KVY is more suited to that role than anyone else in the squad.

You are correct; he is a highly rated 22 year old and an impressive player and probably five ish years from his peak. I was at Oxford (am at most games) and to suggest he was a weak link is way out of order.
Burns is a rarity in any grade of football. We expect him to stop the opposition, create chances and score goals - indeed he does all three. To compare Thompson with Burns is a needless exercise.
By the seasons end I expect our excellent manager will be averaging two points per game, wherever we finish - that in itself should lead to virtually no criticism necessary.

Not bothered about signing him at all. We need something on that left side, but I'm not his biggest fan. He's made a couple of HUGE unforced errors, one of which has led to a goal. Doesn't fill me with confidence and doesn't offer enough going forward, for me.

He's still got moments where I feel he's not switched on and concentrating, but perhaps it's more of how he appears rather than what is actually happening....

He's not actually done too bad though when you look at how he's progressed since being here.

Would be nice to have him, but not one i'm clamouring for.
