Doddie Weir dies from MND (n/t) on 19:17 - Nov 26 by Nthsuffolkblue | I am hopeful that Marcus was accurate with his assessment that is a slow progression. There are two versions of the disease. Stephen Hawking lived many years with it, but the more aggressive version has taken several men I know very rapidly including my own dad in under 3 years from diagnosis. They have all been men. I don't know if there is any known reason why it is more common in men. |
Let’s hope so. Sorry to hear that about you dad. Yes don’t really hear of women getting it, of course along with Doddie and Marcus having it another high profile case is Rob Burrows.

It is a horrific disease and to see it take so much from someone so active was tough.

I don't know if it has anything to do with rugby/head injuries. My business partner Alex was diagnosed in Dec 2010, he is now down to speaking via a voix box arrangement, where hi voice was recorded when he was able. I have not been to see him for a couple of months, he is in south London, on the basis that it is only when his sister feels it is OK. There is not much that can be said. Long chats when he was able to speak more frequently covered so much. Even that we would have a key word that would require me to end it all for him. It got as bad as that. Something that has played on my mind ever since. The rights and wrongs of that. He was a good rugby player in his youth and a very much outdoor up and at 'em chap. As with any terminal illness it is awful. Especially coming back and seeing the world outside carrying on as normal. . My heart and thoughts go out to anyone suffering, or is a family member of anyone with MND. I can only liken it to someone you know trapped and sinking in quicksand, and neither of you being able to do anything about it

It is certainly not as simple as your first line from the victims that I know.

It got him very quickly in the end. He was on TV a few weeks ago. It may be that he actually dies because he got some other disease, and his immune system could not cope. To answer a previous post, my medically trained wife says females can get it but it is far less common.

It is an evil disease. My mate is a year in to his diagnosis. Gone from being life and soul of the party to someone struggling to come to terms with daily life and what comes next and when it’s going to happen. How do you go on when the outlook is so bleak. Knowing you won’t see your kids grow up. It’s beyond cruel. Beyond brutal.

I think if I was ever unfortunate enough to be in that position I'd probably head to Switzerland, I'm lucky not having children, I appreciate that is much harder choice to make when you are trying to enjoy as much time as you can before you depart. I do think playing certain sports can increase the risk factor but I don't think it is the only factor. To those with friends and family suffering I wish them all well, it really is a horrible disease that takes so much before it takes you

My next door neighbour, a nice lady aged 70, fell in the street earlier this year. Follow up tests related to that indicated she had MND and in hindsight we realised her speech had been starting to slow up a bit but it hadn’t clicked with anyone. She went downhill really quickly and died within two months. Horrible disease indeed.

Hear hear. Also a lovely warm-hearted family man. His three sons have literally been standing by him over the years and I hope they continue the work with his foundation. My heart goes out to them and the rest of the family.

Doddie Weir dies from MND (n/t) on 10:58 - Nov 27 with 2036 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Apparently 'regular and strenuous exercise' increases the risk of developing MND. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57431412 FFS. Perhaps my 2.5 hard hours in the gym yesterday (weights, bag work, cardio) was a bit too much. (I'm not being facetious or 'funny'). As a qualified physio I am more aware of what can go wrong with the brain and body. I have already had doubts about whether boxing is for me given the increased prevalence of CTE and other neurological conditions in boxers in later years. Is nothing safe anymore?

As a paramedic of 24 years service, I've attended dozens of training related cardiac arrests and heart attacks. Conversely, I've probably only attended 2 or 3 in pubs. Use that information as you please.

So it will be better for my health and heart long-term to stop regular training and take up regular drinking instead.

Who knows how any of us would feel in that situation. We all fear the lack of independence life is likely to bring in the future, but I like to think I would always make the most of what I have for as long as I can. As much as it was difficult to see my dad lose so much, I would not have wanted to reduce the time I did still have him with us for and neither would my late mum who bore the brunt of caring for him.

There's an apocryphal quote from some Japanese doctor somewhere very much along those lines, isn't there?
