The Sheffield Wednesday v Newcastle game, if at St James Park is a completely different game, as they both scored goals that VAR would’ve given as offside.

I agree. Either have it for all games or don’t have it at all. The competition should be a level playing field.

Agreed. Keep goal line technology and abolish VAR. the faffing around looking at every angle takes the flow of the game away. Nor does it always arrive at the right decision. Human error is part of it and anyway, the mk1 eyeball is still the best bit of decision making kit out there.

There’s already been some ties this season where a result has been heavily influenced by VAR decisions (or lack of), meaning a replay taking place, where the replay doesn’t have VAR or vice versa, so even within one tie, there’s some VAR and some not, over the two games - surely that can’t be right?

Part and parcel of football andxwhst makes it what it is...is human decision making and we are not perfect...injustices are part of what makes football great.

Absolutely not. VAR has been a massive improvement on what se had as evidenced by the weekend. If we went back the same crying about VAR would now be tenfold when people's team start losing important matches to clear offsides, dives etc etc. The only issues with VAR are man made and generally on subjective decisions. We've seen big improvements on how it is implemented and will continue to improve. But people absolutely love to moan about something so either way with or without VAR we'll always have that.

I genuinely can't see any issue whatsoever. Every single match has a different group of officials so there is never an even playing field. It's just an extension of that. It's better in my opinion then saying "because some games have a worse level of officiating, all games must have a worse level of officiating".

VAR has its faults … on 09:48 - Jan 8 with 2697 views | Basuco | VAR is a Premier League referee watching a slow motion reply multiple times, I cannot understand how they still manage to make so many blatant and obvious errors in decisions. Also taking ages to come to what is any easy decision is strange and annoying.
VAR has its faults … on 09:49 - Jan 8 with 2691 views | Mark | VAR is too slow and is taking away the fun and entertainment from football. When a team scores their fans want to celebrate a goal, not think it may be a goal but we need to wait a minute for VAR before cheering. The decisions continue to be inconsistent. I would scrap VAR, or at least minimise it to occasional overturning of clear and obvious key decisions. Offside decisions need to be instant.

But in the instant of scoring nobody does wait to celebrate. Just celebrate. Yes some might be chalked off for offside which is annoying but the key now is the decision is correct so that's ok. Previously you would still have the gutting feeling of an offside flag after celebrating but then the prospect the offside wasn't even correct. The % of correct decisions is so much higher now. For the most part they are working out how to make the delays really minimal. It's not perfect but it's way better now than life pre VAR.

On the factual issues they make very very few mistakes and correct a great many errors. On the matters of opinion dive or not a dive etc. there has to be a clear and obvious error. Generally VAR gets these right too. Games are refereed in the context of what has been allowed earlier in the game, particularly in difficult conditions etc. Some refs might be stricter than others in their interpretation of various laws so you need that clear and obvious over ride. If VAR is available for a cup game then use it. It allows better decisions to be made and applied equally to both teams. If it’s not available, again that applies equally to both teams. No individual team gains an unfair advantage over another.

For me ... I liked the old part of the seeking to gain an advantage of the offside law... yesterday's wolves goal would have stood because as the fella was taking a corner in no way could coming back from that position on the pitch be deemed to have been "seeking an advantage " ... the original law makers generally had most of the laws correct, modern "improvements " have over complicated it!

Offside was also implemented to remove unfair advantage. A player's bell end being beyond the defender is not an advantage. It's ludicrous. Having it inconsistently used in the same competition make a mockery of what is already spoiling the game. Chesterfield would already be in the next round had it been in place for their match.

Don't agree with abolishing it, except maybe in its current format. The issue is, it's applied wrongly, its original purpose was for 'clear and obvious mistakes'. Clearly offside goals, wrongful sending offs. But Mike Riley got his mitts on it and started applying it to everything, because EVERYTHING Mike Riley does, has to be about Mike Riley. Edit, said Mike Dean, meant Mike Riley. [Post edited 8 Jan 2023 12:04]

Having a different ref/lino at the game might have had a different result. Because some clubs don't have the infrastructure and you get a rubbish decision (from the past pre VAR) is a nonsense reason to not have better decisions going on in other games. Any anyway it's just another 'romantic' part of the FA cup with lower league teams just like they would have worse pitches (should all the games have to be played on bad pitches...no of course not).

True, occasionally we celebrate a goal now without noticing an offside flag or the ref may rule a goal out for a foul. With VAR though goals are ruled out so often, and so late, that I would find it harder to fully celebrate when the ball goes into the net. If a linesman thinks a player is offside I like the flag to go up so we know, not let the player score then raise the flag and wait for a VAR decision.

You've used the word 'correct' three times there. That's the issue for me, we're constantly striving for perfect which is just a bit unrealistic. Not to mention the fact that so many decisions are subjective and simply cannot ever be 'correct'. I'd rather improve officiating standards and actually see refereeing as a skill/art and accept that it won't always be perfect. If a player misses a tap in from a yard out, it's not 'correct' because he should score 99% of the time, but he makes a mistake. You have to accept human error as part of sport, and that applies to referees. The trouble is now that it all means a bit too much especially at the top level, sadly that's why VAR is here to stay.
