Retiring from international football aged 29. Really? Who retires early from representing your country? Is he injured or something? I don't get this retiring lark unless you're really old and want to prolong your club career. Seems a bit pretentious.

Such a good player in his first spell for Town especially. Just couldn't stay fit and was frequently the victim of some very poor tackles. Really shouldn't be playing in L2 - far too good.

Williams has only ever been a fringe player for Wales so at 29 I'm not surprised he prefers to avoid all the mallarkey of squad sessions & travelling to obscure locations to sit on the bench. He's not going to be a regular starter so far better to look after his club career, especially given his injury record.

We do indeed, but he doesn't say this is the reason. Just says that it's the right time. Not trying to be contentious - like i say, I don;t get 'retiring' from the national team just seems odd. Did players do this 20 yrs ago?

Yes, Alan Shearer retired from international football at 30.

He, like Chris Gunter, is retiring from international duty because they are League 2 footballers and no longer good enough to be selected.

They have been very popular players in the squad and with the fanbase, and Gunter especially been a legendarey figure gaining a huge amount of caps.

Their 'retirement' is to allow the fans, team mates, etc to pay homage to their Wales careers through a golden era of Welsh football rather than them just not being selected any more for the squad

He's seen the Welsh talent in the current Ipswich side and decided he has no chance of being picked again.

In years gone by Clubs would liaise with International Managers and could expect a bit of give and take over call ups for meaningless friendlies.

But two things happened:

1 Managers of smaller nations felt that they weren't given the same co-operation by Club Managers.

2 UEFA and FIFA decided that they didn't like Friendlies being described as meaningless, so changed the structure of non-Qualifier friendlies to make them part of a "League".

They tightened up rules around players not turning up for International call-ups and strengthened sanctions against clubs withdrawing players for spurious "niggling injuries".

So now every player is available and has to turn up if called up, even if they know they will only sit on the bench.

The only way out is to formally announce retirement from International football. Then you can't be called up and can stay at home without sanction for yourself or your club.

So he isn't being a diva, he is protecting himself from being banned (one of the sanctions) if he wants to play in an important match for his club rather than sit on the bench for a meaningless International Friendly.

Going back years, some of the 1970s mavericks such as Alan Hudson & Stan Bowles fell out with the likes of Ramsey & Revie because they made it clear that they didn't want to turn up & not play. I think those that qualify for a smaller country through grandparents etc see international football as a way of improving their profile & earning capacity rather than a strong emotional commitment.

He's 30 this year which was cited as part of it.

Vardy retired early for England at a time when we were not exactly blessed with striking options. He's played another 5 years in the premier league since and his goals have only really dried up this year. Shame to refuse to play for your country, I think. But there we go. Guess it's not lucrative.

Gunter is definitely retiring.more on age. Johnny Williams is still good enough. He is much much too good for L2 but I think he found himself in a place where happiness was more important than division and good on him. Really decent person by all accounts.

Not for one minute suggesting it is something we should do (particularly with his injury record) but he's still be an asset to us 100% when fit. He'd be ideal in the Chaplin role but we've got Chappers.

Hope he gets up with Swindon. He is still a champ player.

Scholes was understandably miffed about being shunted onto the left wing in a 4-4-2 so that Sven could accommodate Lampard, Gerrard & Beckham. I can't say I blame him.

Was it against Watford where he was almost cut in half by a tackle over on the west stand side wing? We all winced as he was almost wishboned.
