Think I'll take my polling card and no I.D to be officially disenfranchised rather than consenting to a law I disagree with.

I don't know, i've always felt it a bit strange that you just walk in there and vote without anyone really checking who you are. I agree though, that its been brought in for political advantage.

This is simply my ignorance - but if someone doesn’t have a passport or a driving licence - is there a free national identity card which they can apply for? If government sees fit to bring this in then surely they have some sort of duty of care to ensure that people are not disenfranchised.

Edit: spelling mistake. surly to surely

The question is, why has the electorate allowed this to happen without mass protest?

Yes, they surly have one, but time is running out.

surly
/ˈsəːli/
adjective
bad-tempered and unfriendly.

Yes, if you don't a form of photo ID such as a passport or drivers licence, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Yes, let's all kick off because the electoral commission want to take steps to eliminate voter fraud.

Because the Tories want raise the utterly fake spectre of electoral fraud in order to gerrymander elections by making it harder for those least likely to vote Tory to cast their vote.

There, fixed it for you.

I will carry my ID, but only show it after a long and blunt protest to the officials.

The officials have to report back to the E R O at the District Council

And ERO presumably will have to give some sort of report about the election to their seniors

So hopefully my sentiments, and those of others, will reach the top.

Maybe I will give my name as Mr Gerry Mandering in the first time of asking

What voter fraud?

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/matt-hancock-voter-fraud-photo-id

The policy is completely designed for the benefit of the Tories, much like the states in the US trying to restrict postal voting benefits the Republicans. Adding more hoops for people to go through such as a voter certificate makes it less likely for them to vote and the largest demographic needing a certificate won't be Tory voters.

Is it as simple as that? Is there concrete evidence to suggest that Non-Tory voters will be disenfranchised more than Tory voters?

I’m guessing that there must be a lot of elderly Tories who don’t have a passport or Driving Licence (probably more women than men).

In the case of the elderly, a bus pass will suffice.

The big example being London, where an over-65s Oyster Card will constitute proof of ID, but a similar concessionary Oyster Card for young people won't.

Go figure.

That’d be a waste. You have to show ID to get on a plane and voting is FAR more important than that (and better for the environment, as long as you don’t vote Tory).

Voting is not.*

Care to explain why young people aren't allowed to use their travel cards as voter ID, but old people are?

Or why postal voting (mainly used by older people) sees no safeguards added?

These and other issues are briefly addressed here:

https://www.dazeddigital.com/politics/article/56034/1/how-the-elections-act-will

This is voter suppression, targeted at young adults, people on lower incomes and Ethnic Minority households.

Other issues not raised in that article:

Why did the Government take so long to announce the list of approved ID after the law was passed?

Why did they take so long to announce the Voter Authority Certificate, and the process people would have to go through to receive one?

Why did they not allocate any additional budget for Local Authorities to inform the public of these new requirements?

How many extra Election tellers will be recruited to ensure that the longer voting process doesn't result in ridiculous queues (queueing time is a factor in voting rates)?

How much additional budget are they allocating to Local Authorities to provide additional tellers?

Who on earth is going to want to be a teller and have to deal with long queues, explaining the new process and enacting the disenfranchisement of people who should be allowed to vote but may not have a Driving Licence or Passport?

Given all these negatives, how big was the problem of in-person voter impersonation, compared with Postal Vote abuse, at the last General Election?

The other thing is that it is presumably possible to impersonate another person in your household, although if that's your game, the postal vote option is probably a better option.

Much more difficult to impersonate a person from a different household, because you can't be sure they don't have a postal vote or that they will turn up in person to vote, either of which will be caught out.

….can’t use travel cards as voter ID because you don’t need to produce any ID to get one.

To get an over 65 travel card you need to produce ID to qualify for one.

Also the premise that if you are under 60/65 then you are “young” is a bit of a stretch!

I helped a neighbour get their free voter authority certificate on Friday, it took less than 3 mins to complete the process on my phone.

Millions has been spent getting the message across to people that ID is needed, there's even been banners in Ipswich Town Centre about it.
The free ID is so easy to get, to suggest this is voter suppression is ridiculous and clearly politically motivated. Most of you complaining have no issue using photo ID for other reasons but want a free attempt to once again moan about Tories.

There is no reason to think that anyone who wants to vote in a couple of weeks will not be able to because they either didn't have the correct ID or didn't know of the new rules.
