It's made a real difference to any idea of Aussie ascendancy after yesterday afternoon, those very attacking fields didn't last very long.

As a cricket boff, were you pissed off with the 1st innings declaration or did you love it's attacking nature? To my simple mind, it looked madness, even allowing for bazball, but then I know nothing.

Aggers just made the interesting comment but how much this approach must affect the mind set go the opposition The thought of tuffers playing the reverse ramp was quite amusing

I can see the logic, and having two attempts at Australia's openers with the first new ball paid off on Saturday. The prospect of another 30 runs in a tight Test match might have been better though. I think a bit too much has been made of that though, the 26 extras that England gave away in the first innings is far more annoying. 15 no balls is careless and particularly costly in giving Khawaja a reprieve. That's probably 50 extra runs in total.

you have to say that the mind games as well as the physical approach of bazball is playing with the aussie brains pretty successfully so far. All to the point that you have an aussie side playing far more defensively than we are most of the time. Long way to go though..

The chuntering about Robinson - who was over the top in his send off to Khawaja - is quite something given the entire recent history of Australian cricketing behaviour. The Australian cricketing media clearly isn't liking Bazball but then again the team have the same problem that the Tories have here with the pro-Tory press - the cheerleading is so intense that they get lost into thinking it's all valid.

Cricket: Day 4 Thread on 11:57 - Jun 19 with 3061 views | gainsboroughblue | No doubt Stokes is looking to declare well before the end of play today. I'd be happy just to be in a position to consider it.

i did enjoy that passage of play i have to say and the celebration was more to the world in general than khawaja himself but really after the covid series when people in aus weren't even turning up to games because they weren't competitive surely they wanted it like this?

Yeah, and also that it was his first wicket of the match which was a large part of it. Ah, that's annoying. Root stumped.

but it also gives Aus longer to bat to get the target the way we are going. There's pluses and minuses to the way we are playing, i enjoy it but i also think, come on at times but im from a different era!

Carey may be on for a record amount of stumpings come the end of this series. Annoying that. I think if Root wouldve kept going until lunch, the Aussies would've practically been out of it. [Post edited 19 Jun 2023 12:24]

There's an expectation of rain around tomorrow which is playing into England's thinking today. I think scoring quickly is, at least in part, dictated by the knowledge that many of these players can play loose shots so they might as well put the pressure back on the bowlers at the same time. It still needs a player playing like Root in the first innings to hold it together I think.

England need a good batting afternoon session, after that who knows what they'll do? One thing is for sure a draw isn't coming into their thinking, so how long they leave aussie overall is fairly irrelevant, the timing of when they get in to bat might be, but i think we'll be bowled out long before another declaration comes into it!
Cricket: Day 4 Thread on 13:02 - Jun 19 with 2827 views | Steve_M | Another fairly soft wicket to Lyon, decent catch mind. Really need Stokes and Bairstow to put on a good partnership or the target risks being sub-250.

Didn't see that, what did he do? First ever stumping for Joe Root in his entire test career, incredible. Brook gone now, got frustrated at being pinned down said comms.

Brooks dismissed just before lunch, I don't think 250 will be enough

Root’s wicket was sheer stupidity. But love by the sword, die by the sword, I guess.

Was rather rash under the circumstances, when England needed to build a really good base of maybe 200 before going too berserk. It's not like they were scoring slowly already. Tho there must have been something there to tempt such an experienced and skilled batsman.

I’d be happy with anything above 300. Too many below, and Australia will feel they have the upper hand. [Post edited 19 Jun 2023 14:19]
