Not including those purchased off the official Umbro site either!

5,500 of what seemed to be a mixed reaction home kit is quite something

Does anyone know how many we sold in total last year of home and away? Think MA said 50,000 but I presume that includes the blackout kit which would've been a fair few.

Wonder if we still have a third kit to come.

I can’t see many times we’d need it this year mins you, especially now Luton and Blackpool aren’t j. The division…

....but only if you follow him and his youtube channel on twitter.

The strange thing is that he didn't even buy them, but he's still going to use it as a way to enhance his "profile".

It's absolutely desperate.

Hate the home shirt, love the away one. (n/t) by homer_123 1 Jul 2023 8:19
Yep, the home one doesn't do it for me.

Away one is excellent.

Black kit needed again this year.

Fastest selling shirts in the clubs history on 16:28 - Jul 3 with 2269 viewsSteve_M

It's good and those are decent numbers already.

I suppose we need a bit of context around that though as there are only a handful of seasons that might be comparable:

- Summer 1992: home short sold well, didn't change the away one and overseas/online sales weren't a thing;
- Summer 2000: Just got promoted, kept the same kit;
- 2009 with Keane. That kit was fairly sh1t if I remember correctly,
- 2015, first year with Adidas. This must have been pretty good as it was the best of the Adidas kits;
- 2021, immediate post takeover so must have been decent even if the kits were a bit generic by then;
- 2022, Must have been good too as these kits were popular.

....and in particular Ashton, we don't do "context".

It's all about headlines and they probably don't bear much scrutiny!

Yes, I did wonder whether his history only went back to when he was appointed.

Still, at least he resisted the temptation to appear in the kit launch video himself.

Fair bit of white in our kit (their second most prominent colour) and the EFL are really anal about colours these days. Suppose we could have blue shorts and blue socks for it though which would help - and I think we’ve done that on the past up there.

Wonder if we'll break even again on transfer fees after spending about 8 million on incomings and selling Lee Evans and Marcus Harness for about 500k.

He’s saving his appearance for the release of our third kit, which is sponsored by Crisp n Dry.

He is a bit prone to grabbing the easy headline (I'm being kind), but in fairness stuff like this is all about building the hype around the club etc. Feelgood factor feeds enthusiasm and all that. It's part of the reason we were selling out the stadium in division 3!

Makes you marvel at how hapless Marcus Evans was at drumming up interest and engagement doesn't it?

I dont think in any of those previous years we sold 6500 in one day. infact Id imagine in some of those years we'd have been lucky to sell 6500 all year.

in anycase am I reading the clubs announcement right, the £2 donation for Darby Rimmer foundation is only on kit sold in July ?

Yes, some of his comments are a bit over the top and he definitely likes the sound of his own voice. I think that goes with the territory though to some extent and effective CEOs (is that his title?) are people with the drive to get there in the first place.

Over all though, he's done a decent job here, some of that just by being present and broadly competent but, I would agree with you, that driving the hype and sales is an important part of that job too.

I'm surprised you say that about the EFL caring more about kits these days. I'd have said the opposite. In particular, goalies dressed quite like their own team, or quite like the opposition, or extremely like the ref.

But also you just get two teams dressed quite alike. I think a lot of people found Plymouth v Town quite difficult, ( dark green / white v blue /white) , but at the end of last season I also saw Doncaster v Colchester (red & white hoops v blue & white stripes, both teams in white shorts.)

https://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/sport/football/how-doncaster-rovers-grabbed

There have been others too, watching the highlights when I've thought 'wow, that must've been difficult to follow'. I can't remember the last time I saw a goalkeeper or a whole team told to go and get changed, but I remember it happening when I was young, most famously Sheffield Utd wearing Colchester Utd's change kit on Match of the Day.

I think the league a couple of years ago said something about the HOME team having more responsibility for kits not clashing, which surprised me . (Did I understand right?) It's certainly not my impression that they've 'clamped down'.

Having endured 14 years of Evans incompetence and stupidity I don’t see a problem with Ashton personally.

I’m sure he’s not perfect, who is, but he’s been in charge of the club for two years and the change has been incredible.

I know what I prefer!

For those watching in black and white.

For those of us who are monochrome viewers, can I just point out that when we say that it's the fastest selling shirt in the club's history, for most of the club's history, there was no selling of anything very much at all.

Although in the two stands that had some seats you could hire a cushion for two old pence, and even occasionally hurl it onto the pitch to register disapproval.

There was a discussion about Ashton on the recent Blue Monday podcast between Benjamin Bloom and Richard. Worth a listen. The latter has actually met him and his comments were interesting. He correctly says that as CEO he is there to do certain things. The Brent-speak was mentioned as was the Bristol 74 page hate, but basically his view was that he hasn’t done much wrong so far in his role. It’s hard to disagree with that.

Has he made mistakes? Of course. People who don’t make mistakes are those that don’t do anything. Does the corporate speak grate? It does on me because I saw too much of it in my own career. But it is what it is.

Marketing, the brand, continuous improvement (all bulls’t bingo terms) are important. So is a professional launch of a kit. There’s nothing wrong with that or driving hype/sales. Packaging and presentation does matter - a lot. Identity matters (note the ITFC badges everywhere and a clean stadium). If proof is needed, look where we were under Evans where our identity faded to not very much. We looked a tired, depressing old club.

I get the impression that the structure of ITFC top to bottom is very tight and Ashton is a cog very much within that structure. I hope that’s the case.
