Basically the idea is to create infrastructure that means that people in urban areas live within a 15 minute walk of key amenities (shops, schools, GPs) so that we cut down on unnecessary car journeys in these areas. There is nothing to dislike about it, but the right wing have concocted a version of it where you aren't allowed to leave your own 'zone' of the city and will be shot if you do. Sounds great, a bit like the Victorians built, and a good way of restoring high streets. Very sensible, can see why they're so against it.

It's basically how cities were built before cars. But you're not allowed to say anything bad about cars, otherwise, you're declaring war on them.

A ‘fringe event’, yet supported by very senior Tories giving it credibility and who were briefing on her behalf on the news round this morning. A creeping pattern? Ha… They are Tories. So “They” is correct in my post. But you know that and still posted :) [Post edited 2 Oct 2023 16:00]

It's weird, isn't it? They're completely opposed to the construction of new developments along the same lines as developments used to be built in [checks notes] their much-beloved 1930s-1950s utopia.

It's shocking that politicians, who introduced policies that created the fastest wealth creation for oil companies last year, are under pressure from oil companies to change approaches that will reduce car dependency. Next, they'll be scraping rail projects and instead filling potholes! I'm just waiting for them to announce that they're going to increase standing orders and funding for water companies to cover investment in infrastructure to reduce the amount of $hite they pump back out at us, maybe that is for tomorrow. In short, it’s a conspiracy theory invented out of a real planning concept, but twisted to imply governments impose these cities as a method of control. It’s right up there with GPS trackers in vaccines and all that nonsense. Speaking of which, the Venn diagram between anti-vaxers, anti-equal rights, 5G conspiracies, Covid deniers and 15 minute conspiracy theorists seems to be a circle. It’s perpetuated by the same ‘internet experts’ and populist gobshoites at places like GB News. And it’s a global phenomenon (potentially up there with QAnon now idiot MPs are giving it some legitimacy). Nick Fletcher (Tory of course) brought it up in Parliament in February, call the planning concept of 15 minute cities an “international socialist concept…that will take away personal freedoms”. (I know you know this, just adding a bit of additional context for anyone who hasn’t come across this latest paranoid conspiracy).

It may be a fringe event, but 60 Tory MPs have joined her group, so her influence looks like being a little more than on the fringes. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/oct/02/rishi-sunak-commons-majority-in [Post edited 2 Oct 2023 16:38]

According to the article the Growth Group is the same size as the government majority which suggests to me there will have to be some pandering to what they want. [Post edited 2 Oct 2023 16:40]

Interesting, thanks. And why wouldn’t you? Who in their right mind wants less convenient amenities and to spend all their time stuck in traffic jams?

This from Wikipedia is what the dangers are supposed to be. Can you imagine Tory Prime Ministers in decades gone by tapping into this complete nonsense? Shame on Sunak for doing so. For this alone, he sullies the office of Prime Minister, and does not deserve to hold the office. In 2023, unfounded conspiracy theories about the 15-minute concept began to flourish, which described the model as an instrument of government oppression. These claims are often part of or linked to other conspiracy theories that assert that Western governments seek to oppress their populations, such as QAnon, anti-vaccine theories or anti-5G misinformation. Proponents of the 15-minute concept, including Carlos Moreno, have received death threats. Some conspiracy theorists conflate the 15-minute concept with the British low-traffic neighbourhood approach, which includes license plate scanners in some implementations. This has led conspiracy theorists to assert that the 15-minute model would fine residents for leaving their home districts, or that it would confine people in "open-air prisons". Supporters of the conspiracy believe the World Economic Forum (WEF) will take away people's freedom and lock them in their homes using the pretext of climate change. Such beliefs fall within a larger network of conspiracy theories surrounding the concept of a "Great Reset". In a 2023 protest by some 2,000 demonstrators in Oxford, signs described 15-minute cities as "ghettos" and an instrument of "tyrannical control" by the WEF. British Conservative Party MP Nick Fletcher called 15-minute cities an "international socialist concept" during a February 2023 debate in the UK Parliament. Canadian media commentator Jordan Peterson has described 15-minute cities as a "perversion". QAnon supporters have claimed a February 2023 derailment of a train carrying hazardous chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio was part of a deliberate plot to force rural residents into 15-minute cities to restrict their personal freedom.
