Yeah, definitely a touch of 'Zippy from Rainbow teaches chartered accountancy' about it.

This 300,000 new homes a year figure:

Population increase is running at ~400,000 per year, of which ~300,000 net migration and 100,000 natural change (births-deaths).

So why do we need 3 new houses for every 4 new people? If average tenancy was a reasonably luxurious 3 persons, we ought to only be building something like 130,000 new homes, at worst. Are ~170,000 old homes being demolished every year, or are homes disappearing as occasionally used 2nd homes / holiday homes / fkn portfolio investments, while we celebrate 'bulldozing through planning regulations' and burying the country under concrete and chase the idiotic, suicidal dream of perpetual growth?

^ All from ONS figures.

I know I'll cop some flack for this, but I find it really fkn depressing.

Aren't there lots of people sharing homes because they can't get on the ladder? Young professionals back at home with mum and dad for the same reason. Social housing and B&Bs that is really unfit for habitation.

Obviously, the whole thing is predicated on fuelling the homeowner dream which is up for debate. Did he say whether they were all for sale or is there a significant proportion of social housing?

I have no answers, just trying to understand the numbers.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Fair points, fair questions.

I'm not sure if there is any data on existing accommodation anywhere. I suppose it would be difficult to assess suitable tenancy levels.

It's an excellent policy. People of my age group have had to put up with the choice of either living with our parents till we're 30 or never owning a home (and therefore never being able to retire) for far too long.

The prospect of having a Prime Minister who actually gives a sh1t about us is long overdue.

Yes. On a personal level I totally understand that, it's the national strategy and the lack of any sign of us facing up to having to slow down or overheat that really gets to me.

We can’t just stop though. It’s not just a personal problem when it affects a couple of whole generations. We need more housing, but what’s lacking is modernisation of the housing stock. We’re still building everything out of bricks and cement when we should be looking to a housing revolution using more sustainable materials and repurposing existing, empty buildings (e.g. of the sort you find in every town centre). Town/city centre redevelopments could also offer the benefits of the 15 minute city idea, so massively cut down transport emissions too. Far more preferable to expanding commuter belt.

Maybe we even need a few more new towns? You can never have too many Milton Keynes!

Trouble is, it’s needs pretty revolutionary and strategic thinking, a political will unaffected by personal bribes and some extra cash injection from somewhere that doesn’t lead to inflated prices. So, in short, we’re fecked.

We do need more housing, the system is utterly broken.

We do need to rethink the obsession with growth and immigration to deal with ageing population though. Not because immigration is a problem, but because its a ponzi scheme, in a pretty densely populated country. Time to look beyond growth and increasing population to fund our society and to concentrate on things that matter.

A truly deranged policy, when there are many thousands of homes with at least 2 unused bedrooms.

As long as your friend keeps a homeless person behind their printer, they're ok.
