Winter break options? 17:07 - Dec 7 with 2306 viewsSwansea_Blue

Anyone here been to Hamburg in the winter? We’re looking for a 4-5 day break after Xmas, somewhere we can get to in a day on the train. Ideally with the chance of snow/‘proper’ cold winter weather. Stockholm would be our first choice, as we knowing it well, but it’s too far. Hamburg is probably the limit of where we can reach in a day.

Other options would be the obvious Paris, Amsterdam, Bruges, maybe Lille. Cologne would be doable, possibly Berlin too. Hamburg seems nice though with the Xmas markets. Just wondered if anyone could recommend and/or have any tips/suggestions.

We did think of that, but were worried we’d bump into Glassers

Good idea, but I’ve got a Highlands spring trip in mind…

From experience, Hamburg will definitely be bloody cold in winter!

Hamburg is a pretty bleak city in the winter from my experience, there are much nicer cities to walk round at that time of year

Thanks. Will do a bit more research. Cologne and then on to the Harz Mountains might be an option. I’m looking through stuff now. The trouble is, the more I see the further I want to go.

Just been to Gdansk. Bloody freezing. Good town with some trips along the coast and trains to other places.

Turkey may be to far by train in a day.

We're going to Hamburg in mid January for a weekend, very cheap flights from Manchester.

Brussels was a genuine suggestion by the way. Beautiful city and even better this time of year. Usually pop over for a couple of days each year.

Of the German cities I've been to Hamburg would probably be my least favourite, it's OK but way behind Berlin and Munich. In North West Germany I'd say Hanover and as mentioned Cologne are nicer.

Normally you can't go far wrong with Paris but there is reportedly a bed bug infestation crisis at the moment. Not sure how widespread it really is but it would put me off going for a year or two.

Düsseldorf / Cologne / Frankfurt is more beers & proper cider than any one liver can cope with, but won't be snowy.

Train via Cologne or Frankfurt or Paris to Munich gets you v close to snow (2 hours to Innsbruck...), amaaaaaaaaaazing beers and fun. Munich - Ipswich is 12 hours by train...

Hamburg is awful in winter

If you want to be cold and eat well in winter and be easily accessible by train - try Strasbourg or Lyon

Fly to Riga. It's a great city with wonderful beer and food.

Can recommend Vienna. Not sure if do-able in a day by train but a 2/3hr flight from Stansted. Lovely city, very clean, some great architecture and gets fairly cold in the winter months. Plus of course, you have the Austrian alps a couple of hours away if you want to get really cold.

Ha ! Where I live Edinburgh is regarded as part of England...

When I moved to Edinburgh from England, I was told that the population is said to be 40% Scottish, 30% English and 30% the rest of the world.

Apart from during The Fringe obviously...
