Nope, issues like this aren't something you can persuade someone to do particularly if it's a religious belief etc. Sure, you can have a wider discussion (internally) but does it really matter if he wears an armband or not? As someone pointed out, we have other ambassadors elsewhere in the club. He keeps smashing it on the pitch, he can wear what he likes (or in this case, not wear) as long as it isn't derogatory. Typical DM article that..

A religious belief that all people should not be free to live their own lives as they see fit, whilst causing no harm to others? Difficult to justify, right? I am not doubting his contribution on the pitch, but the wider community must be disappointed with him failing to represent minority rights on this day.

Particularly as their alleged principles went totally out of the window at the last world cup.

We should all be free to be who we are, I agree (obviously) Unfortunately, pretty much all religious beliefs go against that and persecute against minorities whoever they may be. Wearing an armband isn't going to fix that so therefore it shouldn't matter and I sure don't want to upset our leader (who is Muslim) over a bit of ribbon - he more than does his bit for the community regardless. If someone at work asked me to wear a rainbow lanyard, I wouldn't wear it. Not for any reason apart from that I don't want to. I am sure the LGBT+ community won't mind me not wearing it. Off the back of the Sheff Utd captain not doing so on 14:53 - Dec 11 with 4850 views | BigCommon | He's contracted to play football for Ipswich Town. He fulfills his contract admirably, imo. Anything else is an aside, and down to the individual. And nothing to do with football. If he feels better to just stay out of it, and carry on playing a very important role on the pitch, as per his contract. Then that's his decision. And I won't judge him on that.

Funnily enough I got my laptop replaced the other day at work and they gave me a re-imaged one with a big 'OUT @ organisation' rainbow flag sticker on the back. Is causing some quite interesting looks - I am enjoying seeing the difference in response when people clock it.

that is such a weak response. All efforts to raise awareness for a repressed community are valid. We are taliking about one day a year here - not anything life-changing. We don't want to upset a muslim? Seriously? The well-being of the wider community and raising their issues should be binned because we don't want to upset a muslim? And your last paragraph is irrelevant. Morsy represents the club, town and the local ommunity - he could go along with the collective effort (he is not refusing for corporate reasons as someone bizarrely mentioned above). I don't know why you parallel yourself with him.

Interesting how much criticism Kate Forbes got re her views on same-sex marriage etc in the SNP leadership election, and before that Tim Farron as Lib Dem leader, compared to say Humza Yusuf who had missed the key gay marriage vote as well. It would worry me if in what I'd consider a liberal country, we give too much respect to parts of a religion which are illiberal, it's a slippery slope - and there should be pressure put on high profile Muslims in this regard.

So if he wasn't smashing it on the pitch, what then? If we didn't all think Morsy was an exceptional player and captain I think we'd see some very different responses to this thread

TBF, Humza Yousuf is pretty unequivocally pro-LGBT rights and missed that vote because he was on ministerial business (he'd voted for the bill in previous sessions).

I'm sure I'd read something that he'd put the meeting in diary after the vote was planned and that he'd apparently been under pressure - will have to have a read back of it

Ok, now you have triggered me with your bs. It's not about pandering to society and upsetting a muslim or whatever but I can parallel myself with who I want to, I can understand multiple viewpoints because I am not a narrowheaded twot. And I don't care what religion anyone is, they can believe in what they believe in, not my problem nor do I give a hoot. I don't want to upset anyone! Let alone unjustly criticise the captain of my beloved team because he doesn't wear an stupid armband, again, I actually don't care. Because he doesn't wear said stupid armband one day a year, people don't know what the LGBT+ community etc are going through? Behave with that bs. It doesn't change anything and spoiler alert, we are already aware of it and further spoiler, the club go above and beyond to be inclusive regardless of an armband. The fact it wasn't even noticed shows what a non-issue it is. It's not a collective effort, he's paid to do a job. He does said job. If he wants to turn up in that job, wearing his birthday suit and that's acceptable for his job, then who am I to judge? I have a job, the collective effort though can quite frankly suck one as can you. [Post edited 11 Dec 2023 16:35]

Off the back of the Sheff Utd captain not doing so on 16:49 - Dec 11 with 4325 views | BloomBlue | Depends on the club. He's an employee of the club (company) when I worked most companies had rules. Morsy religion obviously doesn't agree with the LGBTQ+ community. But ultimately if the club is OK with that then it's their decision. Personally I'm not concerned unless one of the players came out as gay and he stopped passing to them. Although the rainbow armband is only designed to show support so I can see why some people are getting upset about it.

I doubt any company enforces rules where you have to wear certain things to represent a cause.
