Apparently the red of his jacket would have stolen the eye had it been a bland background. So in that respect I suppose it’s quite clever, as his face is very much the focal point.
I know jack about art too. It amazes me that a few brush strokes can capture expressions perfectly. If I tried he’d be unrecognisable as a person.

This probably is good value, as unlike a lot of public procurement lately I bet it wasn’t done through a middle man from his local pub or men’s club who added a 500% markup. There’s also something fit for purpose at the end to. | |

Great picture, and agree with others about the clever background colour, but to me his appearance is made rather more attractive than it is in reality.
I suppose you could say that conforms historically with portraits of the monarchy, but to me it detracts from the success of the painting. |  |
