Was there a game you enjoyed where we lost? 21:02 - Jun 2 with 3261 viewswkj

I was thinking back to Huddersfield on the last day of the season and how they seemed to sing with us about denying Leeds promotion. I then got curious, has there ever been a game that we've played, and lost, but you remember thoroughly enjoying?

Whether it denied someone else, was a feast of football, or you had great things going on away from footy - I think its an interesting question to mull over, especially as we're probably going to lose more than 6 times in the coming season.

Birmingham away in the League Cup Semi-Final in 2001. Obviously disappointing to get so close to a final against opposition a division below us with the quality we had at the time, but the atmosphere was fantastic and there was so much good going on at the club at the time. And I have to admit I rather foolishly believed we'd have other opportunities.

Well never really enjoyed any loss but the most recent example would be the second half of Preston away.

There was a game at Leicester away last game of the season 10 or so years ago which was fun, Mexican waves, congas, the classic songs being sung all game.

Leeds at home I guess. Cracking match and really positive as it showed we could trouble anyone in the Championship

Wouldn't say I 'enjoyed' losing but I was fairly at ease after the Maidstone game, probably because we had bigger fish to fry at the time and I did enjoy it for the Maidstone fans

Sheffield Wednesday on the last day of the 1994-1995 season maybe?

We lost 1-4 but there was absolute limbs in the away end when we scored. Good atmosphere all game and a lot of it was about gallows humour from our perspective as we were crap that day in the way we had been crap all season.

We were just glad it was all over in reality and quite optimistic for the season ahead with George in post.

Yeah probably this. Or actually when we lost to Man Utd in the cup under Mick. Yes it was a weak team and yes it wasn’t a great performance, but as a kid Old Trafford had a magical allure to me watching the champion’s league games (never been a Man U fan though obviously), so seeing it with my dad (who was undergoing treatment for cancer at the time made it feel quite special..

Two that spring to mind are Leeds at home from the season we’ve just finished and Liverpool away in the FA Cup replay. 92 was it?

Ah. Liverpool in '92. I think you've found my winner for me. Though, I was actually peed off for a good hour afterwards before seeing the bigger picture. Mainly due to the Molby free-kick.

This is the one I was going to nominate. Lots of fun in the away end that day.

I seem to remember Wednesday’s youth team or women’s team or something had won a Cup and did a lap of honour. They got a much bigger reception from the away end than from anyone else in the ground.

Some good examples. I should clarify that I didn't mean to imply you enjoyed the fact that we lost, I think most who commented picked up on what I meant - had a really good time at a game despite the losing result.

Bloody Molby, spent most of that game wandering around the centre circle until he popped up with that free kick. Special mention to Gavin Johnson. I don’t think I’ve ever celebrated a goal quite like that one!

I remember getting home about 4am and being up for work at 7am!

From the same season. Spurs at home. They blew us away with total football that I've never seen since. It was a joy to watch Klinsmann, Dumitrescu etc.
Mixed emotions leaving the ground.

Liverpool away. I knew we’d not only get promoted, but we’re good enough to give it a go the following season. That Gavin Johnson equaliser. Oh my, what a moment.

Leeds at home? Only in retrospect did I think we think we played ok. At the time I was disappointed. I felt we were out times outclassed and for 15 mins ripped to bits by that forward line. Speaking to my Leeds mate just after the game, I said Leeds were simply too good and the score line flattered us. It’s how I felt at the time.

Watching it back we were better than that and the games before it told me we were in for a decent season and might challenge for the play offs. Leeds - nailed on for top two. Errr, maybe not. Didn’t bank on them falling apart again or realise just how good we were.

I just remember coming away from that Leeds match feeling entertained, despite the result. To be honest I spent the whole season marvelling at just how good we could be at times. And even when we weren’t on it we would grind out a result. The real sign of a truly good team.

I agree, Maidstone. Plenty of attacking, but no luck and a useless ref. Then you think of what happened to Coventry and how their league form went down because of concentrating on the cup. That was the best loss we ever had.

I know many people won't feel the same way, but I thoroughly enjoyed the FA Cup game this season against Maidstone. At the time I didn't feel like it would have any bearing on the season as a whole and, had we won, the cup might even have become a distraction.

I wasn't disappointed in our performance - we played well apart from 2 moments. There was a great atmosphere; the Maidstone fans were excellent; there was an upset - the romance of the cup!

I think what made it painless for me was that we didn't drop any league points.

Possibly Spurs away first game of the season when we were last in the prem. We scored the first goal in the PL and leaving the ground the Spurs fans only had good things to say.
