McKenna clearly enjoys (and is very good at) developing players.

He's shown that he can do that with Burgess, Woolfy, Morsy, Chappers, Burns etc. while they've played in the first team.

But can he continue to do this in the PL, or will we need to loan players to Championship clubs to continue their development?

For example, I'm pretty sure Al-Hamadi would have featured next season in the Championship. But I'm not sure we can give him the game time he needs in the PL.

We've not had a manager this good at getting career highs out of players since Mick. The difference being he was doing it against the tide with very limited players.

This time we've got a manger with top level coaching and the budget to do it to progress the club not just keep it where it is.

I think when you look at someone like Woolfenden who Cook wanted to bomb out for Toto, but both previously mentioned managers see as a diamond, you have to have a bit of faith that McKenna will pick his projects to suit the status and budget of the club.

The links we've had point to that too, although I'd like to see another Aluko/Keogh type player come in just to ease my need for patterns!

I expect Al-Hamadi to stay and be third choice striker. We signed him knowing we might go up and we'll have seen him as someone we think has the potential to develop and improve. He'll be better served doing that here alongside good players and top coaches than by going out on loan. That might change in January depending on how he's progressing and how we're doing but I'd be surprised if he's not part of the squad come September.

I agree and I think he'll be quite a handful and surprise a few people in the Prem

Al-Hamadi has a bit about him. With hopefully the injury he was carrying being sorted, i think he’ll be a good squad asset for us at the very least. Great attitude too.

Would rather him and Baggott stayed if they are seen as potential first teamers. Better they learn from the best and get use to how we play here.

From an asset development perspective:

Stick Al Hamadi on the bench. Give him a few 15 minutes run outs. If he does anything of any note then he is immediately worth more than we paid for him.

I love him- he is the wrecking ball, randomiser option. We haven't had a player like him since Shefki Kuqi. Premier League defenders will hate playing against him.

Agree with you
Re your last paragraph l mentioned in an earlier thread about Callum Chambers or Tyrone Mings coming in to give us a bit of Prem experience. No idea what they’d cost or whether they’re surplus to requirements at Villa

I think Mings' legs are still in bits. Not sure he'll be ready for this season start or if he's back before Xmas.

Our system uses lots of forwards, with the 60/70-minute changeover. Plus, of course, cup matches. Al-Hamadi will get game-time.

Player development ,you can do in the efl...but not a hope can you get away with it in the Premier league..when you go out against any team .you need your 11 best players ..and subs just as good .if you don't and you put out players just to see how they are up against the cream of the crop..you will be eaten alive and soon be wishing the nightmare was over

You have less control of player development if they are out on loan.

Yes. I think he's one of those players with the strength of mind and character not to be fazed by not getting loads of minutes of game time. He will train and develop better here than anywhere else and I would expect him to make the best of the minutes he does get (cups and cameos to start) and start forcing himself into more regular involvement in the second half of the season (or earlier in the event of injuries to Hirst or A.N. Other)

I think he's a bit of an enigma. Technically a very long way to go (few times he's left ball behind or he's accidentally misdribbled it out etc).

But he has some good assets (size, energy, desire and a knack for being in the right place at the right time). One of those complete unknowns on the day. Can look a £5 million or a £50k player but he'll get more consistent and move to the former more consistently over time.

Be comfortable with him going on loan or staying. Arguments for both. Oxford would be a good option for people like him/Humphreys etc.

He needs to be loaned out to continue his development, preferably to Swansea so I’ve actually got a chance of seeing some of our players in the flesh next year. In fact, we should loan everyone to Swansea, including McKenna. And lend them our kit

More seriously, I’m not sure about Al Hamadi. There’s something there and he could be a diamond in the rough that just needs a bit of polishing. It’ll be interesting to see what KM decides to do with him.

Any player moving up from a lower division to the Prem is developing as they go. Even the very top footballers are constantly developing, honing their craft and pushing the envelope to improve themselves and gain an advantage.

For that matter, we put out a team including Baggott, Ball and Evans, plus (as subs) Humphreys and Aluko, to beat Wolves in the cup last season.

The Prem are not all invincible teams filled with supermen.

Agree 100%

Although I always thought Bilel Mohsni was a delightfully random player

Possibly a bit too random, tbh
