Is Foden world class?! 10:36 - Jul 7 with 4331 viewsChrisd

For a City you can see he is a wonderful footballer, but he’s played a lot of times for England now - out of position at times - but I just don’t see he’s world class? He mainly goes missing in games, you wouldn’t even know he was playing, especially during this tournament although a lot of our players fall into that category. I appreciate Pep sees him daily and rates him highly, however world class players are able to do things, provide the unexpected and deliver a bit of magic, I’ve yet to see it from him in an England shirt. What are your thoughts?

Have any of the England team been world class this tournament? Oh I forgot it’s all the manager’s fault.

No I reckon the best manager in the world who can buy anyone plays him for one of the best teams in the world in the toughest league in the world where he was just awarded best player because he isn’t.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

He is an exceptionally talented young footballer with years ahead of him to reach the status of "world class".

We really shouldn't put that sort of burden in him so early into his playing career.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

What is world class?

For me, a player isn't truly world class until they've won a World Cup, although not winning the WC doesn't mean they can not be classed as great players. But I appreciate others may have different opinions on what is world class

No, world class players stand out head & shoulders above everybody else in international football.

I'd argue world class players can use both feet. You'd often think Foden doesn't even know he has a right foot.

Subjective of course, but I'd suggest a world class player would get into a "world" tournament squad of the best players from every country.

My definition of world class is someone who in their best years would have improved any team in the world. World class players of old include Maldini, Platini, Di Stefano, Eusebio, Cruyff, van Basten; the World Cup eluding these guys doesn't rank them below Man Utd flop Kleberson, does it? 😅 Plenty have proven you don't need to be a very good player to win a World Cup or Euros. You don't even need to be surrounded by a few, as Greece demonstrated in 2004.

Modric was, despite losing to France in that final. Foden hasn't proven himself to be there just yet.

Is Mbappe world class? Not on the evidence of Euro 2020 or Euro 2024. But the answer is yes (Mbappe). So the conclusion is tournament football is not the only measurement of a world class player.

Seems as we're all in different minds about what world class is, let me have a go.

To me, world class would be if you took 2 full teams (including subs) to face one another. In those two teams you select the best players for the most popular formation at the time - which is now probably 4-2-3-1.

That is:

1 Keeper

1 LB
1 RB
1 Ball Playing CD
1 Defensive CD

1 MC Playmaker
1 MC Holding

1 LW
1 RW
1 AMC

1 Striker

So basically - 2 of any of those roles + subs for honourable mentions

Let’s have a definition of world class.

Please anyone contribute;

: Compatible or better performance on key benchmarks set by those that have reached international level
- goals for country
- pass completion
- defensive contributions and clean sheets
- clean sheets and low goals conceded

: Compatible moments (more than one) of truly exceptional execution completed by others considered to be elite among international peers
- ball skills
- skills moves
- goals taken particularly outside box

League or international recognition such as Ballon D’Or, team of tournament UEFA/UEFA.

I’m not able to put PF in the world class bracket at this stage.

That’s daft - Haaland is never going to win a World Cup because he plays for a weak national team. It would be quite the hot take to suggest he’s not world class, in fact he’s probably the best striker in the world.

Ronaldo for many, many years was World Class. Gareth Bale was World Class.
Neither won a World Cup.
For me, World Class is if you would start for any country.

Ridiculous to define a player's ability by the collective success of a a Nations team. Haaland could never be World Class because he plays for a relative minnow. Ditto players like Hagi, Lewondowski, Giggs, Stoichkov etc etc. world Class players.

Club success and individual stats are much more reliable. Foden is obviously World Class. He's won everything at club level and been instrumental in that in the last 2-3 years at such a young age.

World Class definition is subjective to a degree. It's anything from playing International football to be being top 10 in the World really (latter being a bit silly). For me it's probably being a top 50-100 player in the world. There are a lot of very very good players in the World!

My go-to definition of World Class is:

If you had a Northern Hemisphere v Southern Hemisphere match, would they get in one of the two starting elevens?

Any who would just miss out and would be on the bench *might* also be World Class, but a case would have to be made for them.

George Best would be another example.

Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale are probably interesting test cases. Does Giggs' consistently high level give it to him? Does Bale's single-handedly rescuing Real Madrid's season as a substitute in the 2018 Champions League Final.

And Giggs ranks him the best Welsh player:

I will say a 'world class' definition needs to allow for De Bruyne, Kroos, Modric and Gundogan to have held the title concurrently. See also last decade with Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Schweinsteiger, Busquets, a few more I've forgotten, we've got to find a way to accommodate these guys who are all-stars of their eras.

He plays very well for City against poorer sides but rarely does well against the best. In cricketing terms, a bit of a flat-track bully.

On the evidence of this tournament, no. Brilliant PL player, but as an international? None of them are world class.

However, as young players there’s lots to come and I believe they need a better coach than Southgate to get the best from them, including the right players around them. That doesn’t include Harry Kane who looks like he’s playing in one of those diving suits with a metal hat.

He won PFA player of the year in the ‘best league in the world’ playing for one of the best teams on the planet. The answer is quite obvious.

Doesn’t that make him domestic very high class? I was trying to get to a definition earlier,

Plays for a top domestic club in a top tier league and selected for league or international recognition. Good addition!

In the last year he’s won the Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup as well as all he domestic honours. Other than the Ballon d’Or there’s nothing else he could win. Given that he’s been integral to that success on a European and World stage what else can you do to become world class heading into a major international tournament?
