The Utd 9-0 match... on 17:06 - Sep 20 by NthQldITFC
Shameful refereeing for that seventh goal (or whichever one it was).
Eighth wasn't it?
I was okay about losing 9-0 but absolutely fuming about that.
Quite ridiculous to call the keeper over to be booked and then allow a quick free kick but to do so when a match is 7-0 just summed up attitudes towards Man Utd at that time. They were so relentlessly favored it was laughable.
I still remember the way they chased the ref when they conceded their first penalty at home for eight years or whatever insane period of time it was. What was even more ridiculous is Stam went right through Juninho's foot to play the ball and it was a stonewaller.

Ipswich beat Man Utd 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Portman Road earlier that same season. It'd be interesting to compare the Town lineups between the two matches. Everyone was a few weeks younger anyway, for whatever difference that makes!
Roy Keane scored the winner for Town, arguably his most significant contribution to the club!

That must be one of the worst teams ever to play in the premier league - I know that the money wasn't quite as big in those days, but how did we end up with a team looking like it was put together for £2.50 having been in the premier league for 3 seasons? Most of that team were with us during the promotion season in 92.
Not meaning to throw shade on players who had served us well, but ridiculous that we were still expecting them to perform at that level.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
To be fair, that was peak United packed with world class talent and we were an aging team and club in decline. A far far worse 9-0 defeat was Southampton losing at home to Leicester just a few years ago.

"Mason stole the show". "Paz made an encouraging debut". "This could be the start of something good."
Craig Forrest, David Linighan, Steve Palmer, Steve Sedgley, Claus Thomsen, Frank Yallop, John Wark (Simon Milton 88), Gavin Johnson, Paul Mason, Adrian Paz (Bontcho Guentchev 79), Geraint Williams.

Thomsen, Johnson, Mason and Paz out.
Thompson, Slater, Chapman and Mathie in.

What were the positions in the 3-2?
Linighan, and Wark as the centre backs Yallop and Johnson at full back.
Sedgley, Thomsen, Palmer Williams and Mason in midfield
With Paz alone up front?
That wouldn’t have terrified Utd. Even if Sedgley was a sweeper, rather than a midfielder.

You mean this? Absolutely disgraceful!
On the 9-0 game, Yallop v Giggs was a total mismatch. ANd as others have said, the 8th goal is absolutely ridiculous.

i) Man Utd were in a battle with Blackburn for the title and needed to close their goal difference, so didn't ease off (albeit it could have been more - the eighth was scored in the 72nd minute.)
ii) As per Brian McClair. However, Ipswich had beaten United at Portman Road back in September, a defeat which rankled with former United player Brian McClair at the time. “It always stuck with me that Sir Matt Busby once said you have to be humble and gracious in defeat or victory, and Ipswich were not on that day,” he remembers. “They were delighted to win, of course, but they were more than exuberant in their celebrations, so that stuck a bit.”
That was one of the few seasons I wasn't a season ticket holder as I was playing rugby for Colchester on Saturdays.
I was in the bar at the back after our match when the scores came up on TV with no volume on. I couldn't see the score but saw that they had a number written in brackets next to the score. That's never going to end well.

No idea, but I do remember Thomsen being the one shining light that season.
I really liked Thomsen, quality player but seemed to have zero stamina, be great for an hour and then his legs seemed to turn to jelly.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

And according to Warky plenty of players were carrying knocks that day and there was a 'flu bug ripping through the Town squad, which he reckons had it been affecting Utd instead, Fergie would have got the game postponed

Because whoever was making cash out the Premier league back then, it wasn't the likes of clubs like us that's for sure.
Things might have been different had we not stayed up 93/94 but that Stein goal saved us and then condemned us to stick with broadly the same team for another season and buying Paz based on 5mins of video highlights apparently, Taricco only came as a translator

There was actually a BBC documentary that included a bunch of footage from the game as it just happened to be the first ever game the family they were following as part of the documentary went to, as Man Utd fans of course. Just remember the kid saying to camera," is it like this every week?"

I was in Colchester to on that day, but at Layer Road. This was obviously soon after we had taken Burley from them, so Town were hardly flavour of the month. And every Manchester United goal was announced over the tannoy to ever increasing glee...

I went to a Colchester game also just after we had taken Burley off of them. Alan Brazil came up on the TV and his face filled the screen. The abuse was incredible. I was surprised how much they hated us bearing in mind loads of Ipswich fans went to their games when we weren't playing.
